Carolina Press Release: Mudcats Sweep Brewers Monthly Awards ZEBULON, N.C. - The Milwaukee Brewers on Wednesday named Carolina Mudcats outfielder Braylon Payne the organization's Minor League Player of the Month for July while also selecting former RHP Travis Smith as the clubs Minor League Pitcher of the Month for July. Payne posted a slash line of .383/.517/.638 (18-for-47) with 3 doubles, 3 home runs, 8 RBI, 15 runs, 6 stolen bases and a 1.155 OPS in 13 games for the Mudcats. Selected by Milwaukee in the first round (17th overall) of the 2024 First-Year Player Draft, Payne, is ranked Milwaukee’s number eight prospect and in July tied for fourth in the Carolina League in home runs (3) and runs (15). Smith posted a perfect 4-0 record in July with a 0.69 ERA (26.0 IP, 2 ER) over five starts for the Mudcats before earning a promotion to High-A Wisconsin on July 31. Smith fanned 24 batters and recorded a 0.88 WHIP while holding opponents to a .180 batting average and not allowing a run in three of his five starts. Drafted by the Brewers in the 15th round of the 2024 First-Year Player Draft, Smith led the Carolina League in wins (4) and innings pitched (26.0) in July and ranked among the league leaders in ERA (2nd, 0.69), WHIP (3rd, 0.88), opponent batting average (.180) and strikeouts (T-5th, 24). As a team, Carolina went 13-9 in July and led the Carolina League with a 2.59 staff ERA and were second in the league with 13 home runs.

Sunday 8/3: Via the Journal Sentinel Podcast: "The Brewers went on an unprecedented offensive outburst, wrapping up an eventful week with a 5-1 record and smashing sweep of the Nationals. Brewers writer Curt Hogg and host JR Radcliffe break down the team with the best record in baseball, even though there were some hiccups as well like injuries to Jackson Chourio, Sal Frelick and Jacob Misiorowski. The trade deadline came and went, and the Brewers have a couple new players, including Wisconsin native Danny Jansen. Did they miss an opportunity at the deadline or simply follow their successful model? Plus: William Contreras gets white hot but goes under the microscope for baserunning, the Andrew Vaughn Experience continues apace, and will this injury keep Misiorowski from the Rookie of the Year? In Three Up Three Down (41:00), the guys discuss pocket pancakes, the massive Brewers-White Sox connection and Craig Yoho. In Remembrew When (54:45), JR connects Andrew Vaughn to a player from Milwaukee Braves lore. In Curt Blanche (58:30), Curt gives his final thoughts on the trade deadline. Then, JR sits down with Brewers relief pitcher Easton McGee (1:02:00), chatting about his hard-luck career arc, the challenges of his time with the Brewers and Kentucky basketball. Postgame Shows after the 14-3 romp in DC: WTMJ with Dom Cotroneo - Jerry Augustine is Dom's guest 97.3 The Game - Hunter Baumgardt is in for Tim Allen Locked on Brewers with Chuck Freimund - "Brewers' Offensive Onslaught Stuns Baseball World | Can Anyone Slow Them Down?" -
In a continued (but rarely successful, ha) effort to limit our mega-Transaction thread to the, you know, actual transactions, yesterday's commentary has been shifted to the Sunday thread where we say daily "utilized for any minor league news (on that day). You'll find the comments there, and feel free to use this Monday thread to continue the discussions as news breaks.

Image courtesy of BrewerFanatic Transactions: Milwaukee Brewers sent LHP Rob Zastryzny on a rehab assignment to Nashville Sounds. 1B Blake Burke assigned to Biloxi Shuckers from Wisconsin Timber Rattlers. RHP Bryan Regalado assigned to DSL Brewers Blue from DSL Brewers Gold. Additionally, there were injury-related updates on catcher Marco Dinges and RHP's Jason Woodward and Eric Prado posted within our Minor League Transaction Thread here. Finally, it's not a formal transaction as of yet, but expect a breakaway from the organization confirmation soon - Final: Nashville 7, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre 5 Box Score and Game Log Via the Sounds, game details, and we encourage readers to review affiliate write-ups as part of their Link Report routine: Seven Run Ninth Propels Sounds to Saturday Night Win Over RailRiders - Martinez Jr. Puts Sounds in Front with 2-RBI Double in Ninth Inning Waiting until the 9th inning to score is an interesting strategy, but if a team is going to go that route, might as well put the pedal down and score seven times (apparently the MLB record for all a team's runs coming in the 9th inning is 13, accomplished twice). Scoring seven times was also a smart move considering Joel Payamps' efforts to wrap things up in the bottom of the inning (3 R, 2 ER). The Sounds do a nice social media job with video, but unlike the Shuckers and Timber Rattlers, never point to their game summaries on "X". Nice that we always link to them here, because they are pretty fantastic. The two-run one-out double for Ernesto Martinez, Jr. is the biggest moment for EMJ that we've referenced here in a long time. Unfortunately, no video highlight clips from a Nashville perspective on this night. Before the big late rally, RH reliever Craig Yoho stranded two of Will Childers' baserunners in the 7th with two K's. Back out for the 8th, that scoreless frame included yet another K but also two walks. Yoho's otherwise gaudy AAA stats show 18 free passes (14 BB, 4 HBP) in 33.2 innings. One of my first reactions upon the Nestor Cortes (and Jorge Quintana!) giveaway to the Padres - well, beyond why would you help San Diego out - was this: if Jared Oliva and Brandon Lockridge met in an alleyway, couldn't we bring out the twin Spidermen pointing at each other GIF? Matt Arnold, you essentially already had Lockridge in your system! Surely Jared raised an eyebrow over that. This Yankees' AAA team plays its home games in PNC Field in Pennsylvania. How many baseball enthusiasts have mistakenly booked trips and ended up in Scranton/Wilkes-Barre instead of glorious PNC Park in Pittsburgh? Biloxi Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Pensacola (Marlins) 4, Biloxi 2 Box Score and Game Log Catch up with the latest Biloxi pre-game audio interview archives Cornielle Ties Season-High with Six Innings, Shuckers Fall to Blue Wahoos - Burke records first Double-A hit, Miller extends hit streak to eight Blake Burke fanned in his first AA at-bat, but not the second - off LHP Thomas White, who, as Voice of the Shuckers Javik Blake notes here, is pretty well-regarded (White K'd 14 in five innings his last time out): A minute prior, we got the only other posted highlight from this one: RHP Ryan Middendorf was the only arm needed beyond starter Alexander Cornielle. One thing you'll notice about Daniel's Monday AM Link Reports all season, really, is how the bullpens often get emptied during Sunday's action, knowing that Monday is a day off for all. If any pitcher needs to get work in, the organization will make sure it happens in a semi-scheduled way. Watch, this weekend will be the first to make me a false prophet in that regard. Wisconsin Pre-Game Media Notes (download link) Final: Lake County (Guardians) 5, Wisconsin 1 Box Score and Game Log Captains Contain Wisconsin - Rattlers fall 5-1 as Chourio has four hits and drives in three for Lake County Shortstop Eduardo Garcia was a precautionary exit a couple of innings after fouling a ball off his ankle. We'll likely see him rested Sunday prior to Monday's day off. That meant that the later innings of the highlight package won't include season-long staples Jadher Areinamo, Blake Burke or Garcia. Within the linked Postgame Podcast below, Voice of the Rattlers Chris Mehring spotlights some gritty 9th inning at-bats among the much-less-heralded remaining T-Rats. When asked about his depleted position player group, Manager Victor Estevez was reserved in his comments, also within the podcast. Estevez was politely professional yet realistic. Be thankful no one looks at batting averages any more in box scores, right. Right? Yikes. Southpaw Sam Garcia has now wrapped two very good efforts around his rough July 27th outing. Progress. I'm happy for the Wisconsin organization (and especially the cash flow in the team store) - but Udder Tuggers, Brats, Frozen Pizzas, Shantymen, I'm sure I'm missing others beyond the MiLB Latin-themed Cascabeles - it's kind of enough already. Excuse me while I old man chase kids out of my backyard now. Carolina Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Augusta (Braves) 5, Carolina 3 Box Score and Game Log Home Runs Lift Augusta Past Mudcats It was a short night for Eric Bitonti, who was DH'ing on Saturday. What's that, a backfill for Blake Burke at Wisconsin? Not quite, he was ejected after a called third strike in the top of the 1st. A little secret? Jesus Made has been quite "not good" for several weeks now. His July split was not aided in this first game of August, 0-for-5, one K. Reminder - Made turned 18 years old in May. The Mudcats scored single runs in the 5th, 7th and 9th to account for all their runs. Each was driven in by Pedro Ibarguen, which I find pretty cool. Also, very cool? Saturday's other corner outfielder, Tyler Rodriguez, singled twice and walked. He scored all three runs. Since it was a Saturday (cartoons back in the day), in honor of Ibarguen and Rodriguez, a good reason to pull up a "Wonder Twins Activate!" video: Being able to morph into any animal is one thing, but the whole superpower of transforming into any water-based entity was usually pretty uninspiring. Yeah, guess we have to live with the occasional Josh Adamczewski off day. We got another Ethan Dorchies / Jayden Dubanewicz piggyback, and the youngsters combined for nine K's vs. one walk. In a combined 67 innings, both pitchers sport Carolina League ERA's of 2.15, and that's beyond very good work in Maryvale to begin the year, Final: DSL Rays 3, DSL Brewers Blue 2 Box Score and Game Log The Men in Blue were held without a run until a Brailyn Antunez line drive double in the 8th placed runners on 2nd and 3rd. Antunez would be thrown out at 3rd base for the final out of the inning on the next fly ball sacrifice fly, thankfully Carlos Done scored before the 9-3-5 putout. The score was 3-1 after eight frames. Then in the 9th, Blue loaded the bases with no outs (single, HBP, walk). An unassisted double play on a liner to second base scored one run (only thanks to the second baseman's throwing error), but the game ended on a subsequent strikeout. The box score tells us the four Brewer pitchers were generally effective. Final: DSL Brewers Gold 15, DSL Tampa Bay 5 Box Score and Game Log We'll give credit to the Crew for going with "Blue" and "Gold" vs. Tampa's "Rays" and "Tampa Bay". As you can see, the organizations split the day's action, with the good guys clearly taking the run differential battle. Ugly however, with each team committing four errors. Also, Tampa pitchers plunked three batters and walked eight. In the midst of that lack of control, they tossed (12!) wild pitches. Shoutout to Tampa catcher Deinys Gonzalez, not a single passed ball. Those pitches were really wild! This also explains why the Golden Boys had only nine RBI while scoring 15 runs. Ah, the joy of DSL box scores... 18-year-old Venezuelan native 3B/2B (playing 3B here) Juan Martinez doubled, singled and walked twice, lifting his season-long OPS to 1.010. His 20-game July OPS was an awesome 1.262. On the season, Martinez has 22 stolen bases in 23 tries, and the switch-hitting 2nd year pro is now 37-for-39 in attempts in his career. Talk about a breakout campaign (.700 OPS in 2024). Jonathan Rangel, an 18-year-old 1B/C, has had a very strong 2025 (1.013 OPS in his 2nd pro season). He had to leave the game after an 8th inning HBP, hopefully OK. For yet another 18-year-old, RHP Christopher Peralta (Freddy's cousin), four of his last five outings have been quite solid. Robert Gasser continues his road back from Tommy John with another Appleton rehab appearance today. Hope everyone has a spectacular Sunday. Go Brewers (and Orioles!). I'm aware we promote reading the game summaries incessantly within our Link Reports (me in particular), but the Sounds media team does a fine job here in detailing the team's recent offensive woes. It's very reminiscent of the parent club getting shut out six times in the first 17 days of May (yes, that really happened and wasn't fun at the time). With Bryan Hudson and Elvis Peguero in DFA limbo, the Sounds' staff was not in need of a scheduled doubleheader. Since it was on the road and the club lost both games, at least they only needed to cover 12 innings. Chad Patrick did his part; Tobias Myers did not. Best record in baseball and Joel Payamps, Hudson and Peguero were all removed from the 40-man roster. Myers' rough outing forced Garrett Stallings into the game, and it seems more likely Stallings would have taken a rotation turn this weekend if not needed here. If Henderson is plucked today, Manager Rick Sweet may similarly pluck his moustache out in roster anxiety. Bobby Dalbec sat out both games, any extended absence for him would complicate things for the Sounds. Remember this guy? Biloxi Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Pensacola (Marlins) 1, Biloxi 0 Box Score and Game Log Catch up with the latest Biloxi pre-game audio interview archives Peterson, Bullpen Dazzle but Shuckers Fall to Pensacola in Pitcher's Duel - Shuckers lefty sets season-high with 4.2 innings, Bowman extends scoreless streak to 11.2 innings LHP Mark Manfredi was part of the "bullpen dazzle" mentioned above, and his is among the interviews linked. Mike Boeve fanned in all four trips to the plate and looks to be in real trouble. He has K'd in 60 of his 247 plate appearances (24.3%) with the Shuckers coming back from labrum surgery this spring. Boeve struck out nine times in his entire college draft year, albeit in the Horizon League, still Division I. Who is the recent bat beyond naturally gifted Jackson Chourio that the Brewers have truly guided from acquisition, to deep-into a development success story? They can't take full credit for Isaac Collins. It's been a decade-long lament. I've got to believe that other MLB organizations are feeling the 165-man stateside roster limit pinch with gutted benches on their affiliate rosters, the Brewers can't be the only ones with quite-often only a singular position player reserve option at multiple levels nearly every night. Looking forward to the infusion of the three Top 10 college position player picks into full-season ball, which should kick off a chain of moves - 1st round corner infielder Andrew Fischer, 6th round INF Danny Dickinson, and 7th round OF Josiah Ragsdale. Wisconsin Pre-Game Media Notes (download link) Final: Lake County (Guardians) 7, Wisconsin 2 Box Score and Game Log Captains Sail Past Timber Rattlers - Wisconsin commits five errors in 7-2 loss Enter at your own risk - at least we don't see "every" error: Win or lose, ugly or not, the podcast is always worth your time - here's your 11-minute version that includes Manager Victor Estevez: Kudos to RH starter Tanner Gillis and SS Eduardo Garcia. Garcia remains an interesting follow to see if he'll re-sign with the Crew, or whether he reaches minor league free agency in October at a very young age, not even 23 and a half years old. Unfortunately, you have to really squint at this position player group, which has pretty-much been static all season, to wonder how many will ever reach AA, never mind later this season. That sounds harsh, I realize, but it's a challenged collection offensively. Carolina Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Augusta (Braves) 12, Carolina 4 Box Score and Game Log Augusta Takes Third Straight from Mudcats Have not researched to determine why RHP Bryce Meccage went only two innings, 37 pitches (24 strikes), facing only ten batters. Crossing fingers. The three Mudcat pitchers walked seven and plunked four patters. LHP Bjorn Johnson added two wild pitches to the mix. This was the very first full-season game for Venezuelan catcher Kevin Garcia, who just turned 18 years old on July 20th, less than two weeks ago. He doubled and singled twice and played clean defense, even if he couldn't quite guide the arms to better results, hard to fault the young man there. Josh is incredible - Wind-aided or not, this oppo taco is impressive! When the Chicago Tribune takes note of the Illinois native even when he plays for the "rival" Brewers, that's impressive. It's a $1 paywall feature article, but I do provide one tip for a "free look" at this forum link. Not sure about your thoughts, but no need to rush Brice Turang into a contract extension that would block Mr. A. from taking over second base full-time in 2028-2029 and then holding it for the next decade beyond that. Jesus Made and Luis Pena were both on the bench here, and with limited home games in Appleton the rest of the way, the ticket-sellers in T-Rat Land are getting anxious. Filippi Di Turi (on base three times) and Eric Bitonti (on twice) tried to make up for the dynamic duo's absence. The GreenJackets "X" feed shows that team taking advantage of pitches from Meccage and Bryan Rivera. Final: DSL Brewers Blue 14, DSL Cleveland Mendoza 3 Box Score and Game Log Final: DSL Brewers Gold 5, DSL Braves 3 Box Score and Game Log There are nice DSL insights within three consecutive posts at our daily forum running thread here. In fact, the full thread has commentary that supplements this report well should you wish to read through. Would love to be watching a big-league Brewers game in five years and referencing folks to this post when we noted that impressive 17-year-old Nicaraguan native RHP Diustin Mayorquin retired all 12 men he faced while continuing an impressive debut season. The same six affiliates see action Saturday. Enjoy another summer weekend, everyone - darn, August already! When the Chicago Tribune takes note of the Illinois native even when he plays for the "rival" Brewers, that's impressive. This feature article focuses on Adamczewski's mindset but is very much worth the one dollar it'll take to get a year-long subscription, whether you then immediately drop it or set a reminder to do so. One tip - I was able to do a print from my desktop browser within the first few seconds before the paywall prompts, you have to be very quick. Take that, technology! -
