  1. 67% on steals is brutal The last three years they have stolen at rates of 70% in 2009 73% in 2008. So the team kept getting slower and they kept on stealing. They have been in the top 2 in caught stealing each of those years. The Rays have also been one of the top caught stealing teams those three years, the difference being they stole at a more acceptable rate of roughly 76% over that time frame, so at least it seems they have a magic number in their head rather than just stealing blindly. ...so hopefully Roenicke is more brilliant than Scioscia.
  2. I thought the handshakes were a fun thing. I think they all knew it was cheesy and they did it for slightly sarcastic reasons just to have fun. I wonder if this was just a matter of job security...maybe he couldn't be promised a spot with the new staff then this came up and he took it to cover himself. Either way I will miss the human ent coaching first base.
  3. its two games....+8 years.
  4. I didn't see the game, so grain of salt...if Bogut is limited offensively by his injury, it probably creates an identity problem for the offense. If that's the case, I would look at a more guard oriented offense. Jennings, Salbass, Maggette, Delfino, CDR going to the rack is probably not a bad option rather than running the offense through the post with an injured Bogut or a terrible Gooden.
  5. That is disheartening if it is even partially accurate....we lifted for baseball in high school. Granted it was paired with the football lifting as much as anything; but for me it made a big difference in performance (from bad to not as bad http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif ). I totally agree on the wasted time in winter ball too. Having coached HS basketball, I would liken it to having kids play AAU, i.e. waste of time compared to good strength and conditioning participation. Either way, it seems like implementing an in and off season lifting program would be a relatively simple and easy way to get a much bigger return on a team's investment in the minor league system....heck, just rent the weight room at a local high school or college for a couple of hours a day.
  6. You don't lift weights in baseball? That doesn't sound right...
  7. He moved because of Fielder. I think he was actually pretty good at first. That said, I'm in the McGehee to first, Gamel to third camp. I think both would have a good chance to be upgrades over who they replaced defensively.
  8. ?? THis is a weird one, usually doesn't happen this "early" in a thread... 2010 ARizona Fall League Thread (minor leagues) http://forum.brewerfan.net/search.php?keywords=673064#reply-673064 20 posts per page blank page newest post was TLB: #80 [note from 1992casey: There are 82 posts in the Fall League topic greeg35 mentioned above. Using mod/admin reply numbers, replies 39 & 40 are hidden.]
  9. anyone else going saturday? Will there be a laser light show as in the old days? Will they take the same old rap song and put new lyrics in? Todd Day, young talented and tough!Murdock, young talented and tough! So who's gonna win it? The Bucks, the Bucks! What ever happened to the drunk thread?
  10. That's the thing with Valentine...it just seems like he's not motivated to be here, just kind of "ho-hum maybe if you pay me enough"
  11. I’d like to use my 1000th post to reflect a little on what BF.net has meant to me as a baseball fan. Starting in 2004, I lurked for a while; but the posting started for me with a discussion with Rluz (of all people) about why I thought Daryle Ward could be considered a “Brewer Killer”. After that I took a break. Later on, I moved back into the posting world; but found and am finding I have little to contribute outside of what many of the impressive minds here already can and do. After getting lit up in that little disagreement with Russ I went back to lurking and learning more about the game I thought I knew everything about. While I haven’t moved totally into the camp that discounts most things non-quantifiable as luck, I have moved farther in the direction of appreciating “Sabermetrics” than I ever thought I would. I appreciate this community not only for its knowledge; but for its civility and focus on INTELLECTUAL debate, even in disagreement. So I’d like to make this a thread about what BF.net has done for your baseball fandom, and also I’d like to list five of the posters I most appreciate (out of an entire community of awesome posters), not because I always agree with them; but for the perspectives they bring to the message board: Rluz: obvious choice re: stats, needn’t more be said AJAY: for his pure, unadulterated, emotional fandom Briggs: for bringing it old-school Battlkow: for humor and a diverse minor league perspective Trwi7: every community needs a fact checker, and he is good at it. As I said, this community is full of people bringing value to the discussion so thanks to everyone. Thanks also to the creator of the site and all the mods for the work you do!
  12. Agree with the excited crew for the same reasons and I like both teams' players, the style of play, and all the good pitching.
  13. That's from Handricourt's blog. Sounds to me like Rosenthal saying Valentine's name keeps "popping up" could be referring to his conversation with Handricourt about Valentine...seems like it could be a self-contained rumor (probably the best way to start a good one!). Not that it couldn't be true; but I'm not buying my Valentine jersey yet.
  14. My opinion on Cora is based on info from friends who are fans of the White Sox and what I've read about both candidates and their personalities. Obviously without knowing them, having seen them in action, or being in on the interviews, my opinions are not exact science.
  15. yeah, definitely hedging my bets http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  16. If it is the assumed 3 plus one mystery: 1. Cora2. Roenicke3. Mystery4. Melvin
  17. I find myself agreeing with both of them a lot, so you might be on to something there...

  19. After reading comments and Handricourt, I guess it is more common to do this than I thought. I take back my negative statements about the decision, and I'm glad Dale is back. Still think I would want to pick my whole staff on my own; but who am I to question baseball tradition? http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  20. What's not bugging you: http://forum.brewerfan.net/search.php?keywords=660279#reply-660279 20 posts per page Blank page Last post by principessa (about the Yankees) #2895 in the thread
  21. Not that I don't like Sveum as the hitting coach, he was fine; but these decisions are being made backwards. Same as they were when Macha was hired. If I were a manager, I would want to hand pick my staff. If a manager doesn't want to do that, then I wouldn't want to hire him. It just seems to open the door to a lot of weird dynamics in the clubhouse like second guessing, divisions in loyalty amongst players, etc... That's not to say the new manager wouldn't hire Sveum anyway; but lets put the cart before the horse. I think this makes Melvin the favorite because an established manager might be a little more secure with something like this, and it seems to fit what I know of Melvins reported personality and style more than it does what I know of Cora's.
  22. All other things being equal, you replace a hitter with one that is worse, you get worse. All other things must not have been equal.
  23. sounds about right to me. Comparable to what we did last year, except rates are lower now.
