  1. The downside would still be no neo-Mr. Yankee (at least not a "clean" version of him) and no 3000 hit chase. I'm not saying these are be-all-end-all; but they mean something to the Yankees and Jeter knows that. Hence, his leverage.
  2. Just because the fans and media haven't taken Jeter's side right now doesn't negate the upside for the Yankees of having Jeter there doing those things later on.
  3. I guess I was talking about the market for Fielder and first basemen specifically. If they are expecting a Howard type contract I think they'll be disappointed. Heck, Howard shouldn't have even gotten a Howard contract. Time will tell.
  4. maybe more of a rich man's Hal Morris http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  5. I think we may be underestimating Jeter's leverage with the Yankees....the "modern Yankee legend" thing + 3000 hits means something. That said, I think at the end of the day he'll end up taking the "inflated" offer the Yankees have on the table.
  6. I think that's a valid point as they have similarities; but Fielder and Dunn are quite different. Fielder is more athletic (relatively speaking) and I think he's better in the field, not to mention that Fielder is younger. The biggest difference is that resigning Fielder would have a positive PR effect for the Brewers. I also think they don't realistically think that they'll be able to sign Fielder. Melvin has shown he will make his best offer knowing that it probably isn't good enough just to say he tried his best to sign a guy (like CC). So I don't think they'll sign either of them for different reasons. I agree with Cougars that Boras/Fielder may get a rude awakening when they see how bad the current market is even compared to the market when Howard signed a couple years ago.
  7. I like Dunn; but he seems to be in the opposite direction from where Roenicke and the gang are going.....lots strikeouts, slow (understatement), bad defense.
  8. Several times a day I go to the JS site with some part of me expecting to see that this got done. I've been disappointed so far.
  9. now that sounds like a fun job!
  10. But SOME of them work out (otherwise there wouldn't be any good pitching right?); they just work out at a low rate...which is why I believe teams like the Brewers need to hold on to as many of their pitching prospects as possible. That makes the chances higher for us having at least ONE of them pan out for us so we don't have to overpay for other peoples' pitching via FA or trade.
  11. I'm not extremely familiar with how this league works; but how many MLB starters are over there playing? It seems weird that the Brewers would sign off on this with Escobar.
  12. There's a lot here that is out of your control. You are dealing with major issues that someone 3 or 4 degrees away from you has. I understand that you enjoy the direct relationship you are in; but all this is an indirect part of that same relationship. To protect your family from getting dragged into this mess I think you'll have to draw some pretty strong boundaries for your gf as far as how much contact you and your daughter have with her family, discuss/explain explicitly why you are drawing those boundaries, and let her know that if things don't change then the relationship will have to end. Its harsh; but as someone stated before, there is no way for you to have a direct effect on what's happening over there without getting yourself and your daughter involved.
  13. I'm the ultimate conspiracy theorist; but if I were Norton I would have off the books people to create stuff just to put fear into the public and keep my product demand up. They probably employ hackers anyway to help them defend against viruses.
  14. Fielder for Floyd/Beckham would make sense for the Sox if they could ink Fielder to an extension. The key here is we need to get Boras out of Fielder's life and the Brewers' life will get much easier.
  15. Maybe I'm overvaluing our own prospects or overvaluing what we could get for Fielder; but I'd much rather work out a 3 team deal involving Fielder and throw the prospects we get as a result of that to the Royals for Greinke. I'm just not keen on giving up Lawrie in the face of losing what I consider our two best hitters (Fielder, Weeks) with no other obvious replacements in the minors. If we extend Weeks, I'm more open to trading Lawrie. Furthermore, I am loath to give up Jeffress, Rogers, and/or Odorizzi when we've been struggling to develop our own young, talented, cost controlled pitching for so long and we finally have some nearing the top of the system. Yes, young pitching is risky; which is why I think it is of the utmost importance to hold on to as many possibilities as you can and throw numbers at the problem hoping one or more will stick. Otherwise we are stuck in two years plugging holes with whatever we can afford in free agent pitching again. I'd rather not go back there...ever. This is assuming we will not be on Greinke's no-trade; which at this point I'm going to assume we are and give up on hoping for this.
  16. Being the third base coach will really be a test of his popularity amongst fans.
  17. wow! I bet you never expected that quick/direct answer to your seemingly rhetorical question http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  18. I wonder if they would be interested in Gamel
  19. It would seem weird to organizationally jump whole-hog into the "Peterson Way" as part of the effort to improve long term pitching results, then ditch it the next year...stranger things have happened though. If he is gone, I will not miss watching him jog to and from the mound, nor will I miss the hand on the shoulder bit.
  20. Don't worry, he'll be hitting leadoff and stealing at every opportunity in our new "aggressive" lineup. I hope I'm kidding.
  21. I think Weeks will continue to progress and will outperform those numbers.
  22. That was my point. Its possible that they recognized speed as undervalued; but were smart about using it. So I think we are in agreement on that. Use it as a tool if you have a good chance of being successful at a good rate, and, as Rluz points out, in higher leverage situations. The angels, on the surface, did not appear to be as smart with it.
  23. 2 out of 3 won't sink you; but the Angels are consistently league leaders in attempts, so it hurts them more to give away those extra outs. Even then, it may not sink a team (depending on what they do with the rest of their outs); but it sure isn't smart. In general its worse to do non-smart things more often. As previously stated, the Brewers were 4th in the league in runs so Macha couldn't have been too bad at creating runs...or just letting them happen. One of these days I'll find the time and energy to analyze (or find existing analysis) on the game to game variability of the Brewers runs vs. a team that is widely considered more a "consistent" run scorer. I have a feeling the differences are not significant over the course of the year. Until then, I guess we'll have to rely on the anecdotes and the prevailing attitude of the fans and media who say it was obvious that the Brewers are "boom or bust" Lo and behold, the A's were 3rd in the AL in stolen bases; but their success rate was about 80%. Undervalued or not, it is not smart to give away outs.
  24. probably depends on how the powers that be view what Kottaras brings to the table. Aside from boyish good looks, being left-handed, carrying a good OBP (especially considering his batting average), and good slugging, he's not that great defensively and carries a really low batting average. If Melvin/Roenicke focus on those two things a light hitting, strong defense catcher could challenge him for the backup spot.
