  1. I agree. I'm excited to see what Schafer can do; but only because he seems to have ability and hasn't had much chance to show it. His numbers haven't indicated he has much power; which generally doesn't "progress" well as one moves up the chain. I also don't necessarily put much stock in what Nichols says.
  2. He has plenty to prove and much to learn (and a lot of potential IMO) in AAA on defense at third. I'd like to see Gamel take over third next year with McGehee going to first.
  3. I'd like to see him as the AAA third baseman. He will probably be a utility guy in the majors though.
  4. All things that cannot specifically be anticipated; but generally should be anticipated to happen to pitchers at some point. Instead of having proactively dealt with these realities, he reacted by signing Suppan, Davis, Wolf, etc... for the rotation and many other mediocre/expensive pitchers in the bullpen. Since that didn't work, Fielder and Weeks are almost gone, and his contract is coming up, he made a good but expensive (desperate?) move to actually shore up that hole by trading for Greinke. I feel the need to say it again: I like Melvin and I think he's done a good job rebuilding our franchise and I hope he sticks around. I also hope he has learned from his mistakes.
  5. Fair enough. It does take time to turn things around and we did have some "bad luck" with the pitching we did try to develop; but some of the "bad luck" involved in developing your own pitching has to be anticipated and counteracted by sheer numbers and types of pitchers drafted. We also wasted 2-3 years and a lot of money trying to patch the hole by signing mediocre/crappy free agent pitching. At least Melvin found a strong "patch" now with Greinke. Too bad he waited until Fielder/Weeks(?) last year here and it cost an arm and a leg. I'm actually not anti-Melvin and I don't want him gone; but I think even he has acknowledged that he erred in his approach to developing home-grown pitching until recently.
  6. I don't think I feel all too differently than thecrew07 does. I think the Greinke trade had to be made as a result of poor managment of our farm to begin with. We ended up with a bunch of good hitting, no fielding position players and no pitching. Now we had to mortgage part to all of the future (3-7 years) to be competitive with that group. With things as they are the Greinke trade was the way to go IMO (bolded so I don't get ripped too bad http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif ). I'm very excited about being competitive the next 2 years. After that not so much. However, if I could turn back the clock even farther I'd rather have Matt Cain than Fielder (to use the comparison Melvin always uses); basically a more balanced or pitching heavy farm system. Yep, developing pitching through the farm system is a crap shoot; but its better than relying on the trade or free agent markets to acquire it because there you are assured of extreme cost, mediocrity, or both.
  7. I don't know if you have numbers/studies to back that up; but I would have thought the number one cause was mental illness. Maybe a chicken or the egg thing....or maybe I'm just wrong.
  8. 1070 wow. You must have the reflexes of a rabbit, nerves of steel, and the patience of a saint. I got to 350. I can't imagine how long your snake must have been...
  9. Funketown, that is a really funny sig. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/laugh.gif
  10. http://brewersbeat.mlblogs.com/archives/2011/01/gindl_schafer_among_non-roster.html I'm very eager to see what Schafer can do this year...
  11. As much as the Brewers are concerned with Weeks' injury history, Weeks has to be too. Another major injury really damages his chances at getting a big paycheck so both sides are motivated to get this done. I'd expect the 4/40 to 5/50 range to be about what Weeks gets.
  12. agree 100%. I've pretty much come around to thinking the only extra value a "closer" has is that other people think they are more valuable. The key is not getting sucked into that mentality yourself and taking advantage of others' perceptions when the time is right.
  13. I think the two things you point out are consistent. Closers can come from anywhere; but are overvalued by the league because of the "closer" label. Therefore, you should both not sign or give up much for expensive ones and take advantage of the league wide overvalue of "closers" that you have by trading them when the time/deal is right. That said, i would want a lot in return for the Ax man since he's pre-arby and has a sweet mustache
  14. I wouldn't say if he hits 100 in the fifth he's not helping; but he has potential to help a lot more. Kind of like Gallardo, a slight improvement in efficiency and he'll be a staff ace type pitcher (or would be if we didn't have Greinke). Now if Rogers is hurt or giving up 5 runs by the 5th then he's not helping.
  15. 40 and rainy is the worst. If its going to be below 55, it might as well be below 32 and snowing.
  16. saw that they had their blog updated and posted it in the wrong thread http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif Nice signing. Good timing too for a boring day at work.
  17. the JS is taking a while to pick up on this. Is Haudricourt still on vacation?

  19. I've been posting more recently and I realize that I probably edit 9 out of 10 posts after submitting them the first time. --edited just for effect; but I can't get it to show up!
  20. Because I'm an idiot, I went into the week thinking Christmas Eve was on Thursday (therefore 3 day work week). Well needless to say, I'm working today and the day is going rather sloooowww. If only the Greinke trade was LAST night....the board would be more active http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  21. I have to think that Melvin told Greinke that he would not be trading prince to get him to waive his no-trade clause....I've been wrong many times though (especially in blind speculation)
  22. The scary thing as far as OBP is that he didn't really walk much last year. I'm hoping for better this year based on his minor league history; but I'm not sure why that would have just disappeared nor why it would reappear.
  23. I think getting stronger will help him a lot offensively. Hopefully he is approaching his off season that way. It seems like the strike zone judgement is there; which is the hard part to learn. He just has to relax, get some more experience, and drive the ball more. Defensively, I think he has the tools to succeed. The biggest thing in improving there is putting in the effort to get the reps needed to get better. Experience will help too. I would expect league average defense and offensively an OBP somewhere between .315 and .330, slugging somewhere between .330 and .350 (OPS Somewhere between .645 and .680) if I looked at ZIPS properly, they had him at .695 ops (with more power than I "scientifically" projected http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif )
  24. I agree that in Cruz vs Betancourt, I'll take Cruz; but that's not saying much, and I have a feeling the brewers will lean Betancourt. Also, we've already had our Listache this decade...his name is Casey McGehee http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif Wait, that was last decade maybe.
