  1. In 9 minor league seasons, Cruz has hit a slash line of .290/.375/.665, last year he hit .309/.414/.723 at AAA. I think what Escobar did last year is about the ceiling of what we could expect from Cruz. Its tough to know defensively about Cruz (all I can find are high error totals from last year); but Escobar improved as the year went on and was very solid toward the end. Seems like people (not necessarily you, Cougars) are getting a skewed perspective by the fact that Cruz is destroying winter ball while Escobar struggles. I guess its a long way of saying I have no reason to trust that Cruz would be adequate this year.
  2. Sure there's a chance someone could come out of nowhere and be good; but we didn't leave the rotation to chance and I'm glad. We've gone all-out to fill the hardest holes to fill in the rotation. I just can't see leaving a position like shortstop in the hands of Betancourt, Counsell, and Cruz knowing we will get bad offense AND bad defense from Betancourt, that Counsell is 41 years old, and that Cruz is unproven. It could greatly hurt our team's chances of success during (as things stand) a very short window of opportunity.
  3. I'd be OK with dealing Gamel (or less likely; but for me more desirably McGehee) for an upgrade at short this year. We can worry about first next year as it is a relatively easy position to find a decent stopgap at. Our hole at short is glaring and needs immediate attention.
  4. except aliens and ghosts (probably) are not possibilities. Fans are. Specificity is important in journalism and Haudricourt does plenty to draw criticism on his own, he's not some victim to negative mob mentality.
  5. I haven't listened to Davis for a while but one thing I did not like was that I couldn't get a sense of if the things happening were good or bad for the bucks, because he got excited the same both ways.
  6. any news on "last page blank"? Thanks for all of your work on this stuff Casey, I realize Yuku probably makes it a frustrating process.
  7. Good point. I guess I should have mentioned that I'm assuming Cappy would be back. I'd prefer Cappy to Francis.
  8. I think it would be a waste of time, money, and roster. Narveson at 5 is fine.
  9. Weeks FielderBraunHartMcGeheeLucroyBetancourtPitcherGomez/Dickerson Those last four really stink.
  10. Splitter, is there any way you can shed some light on why we should not be worried about this? Because I'm worried. How confident are you that something gets done here?
  11. I'm less on the Marcum extension bandwagon than I was before the Greinke trade. Just not sure he'll age as well and he's already 29. Seems like our resources may be better used elsewhere especially since we have some young pitching coming up. This all depends on the size of the theoretical extension though, of course.
  12. Oh, I agree, its just funny how perspectives can change.
  13. I think its funny that Wolf went from questionable #3 to "stud" in two days.http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  14. Like him or not, with our payroll where its at already, that person might be Luis Cruz
  15. I may be in the minority; but I think Gamel could still be a very good 3rd baseman in time and given the reps. He has the physical tools to have very good range and has a strong arm. It just takes some guys longer to settle in defensively for whatever reason. I think his physical tools alone make him nearly equal to McGehee defensively already, since Casey is by no means a world-beater on D. I'd rather see McGehee shift to first or be traded than Gamel. I would go with Gamel at AAA this season, not because he has anything left to prove offensively; but because he needs reps defensively and we really don't have a spot for him at this point.
  16. Sounds more like he might have killed your dog. Again, no one is saying he is an all-star just a good bet to be a solid part of a platoon needed as a result of getting Greinke.
  17. I'm closely watching Morris, Thornberg, Richardson, Nelson as candidates to take big leaps by the end of the year.
  18. I'm truly hoping this is a case of the Royals requiring Betancourt to be a part of the trade. If not, it probably means we want him there to play shortstop. I'd be OK with Punto or Renteria as Triw7 mentions. I'm also thinking counsell needs to be signed either way. How much payroll do we have left to sign someone else?
  19. Nah, we'll pay him $4mil this year and use the Royals money to pay his $2mil buyout next year. One year is still too many though.
  20. has there ever been a trade involving a PTBGB (player to be given back)? The numbers, scouting reports, first hand accounts, anecdotes, etc...speak for themselves. There really is no defense for this guy (no pun intended). I would prefer a Cruz/Counsell platoon if given those two choices. As it is, I sign a veteran such as Renteria who is looking for a starting job.
  21. ha ha, handricourt's blog went from "Brewers going for it in 2011" to "Brewers paid a high price to land Greinke". Don't want to be too positive now do we?
  22. This trade would be better without Betancourt.
  23. Yeah, I keep trying to tell myself that a lot can happen between A ball and the majors for Odorizzi. I hate losing Cain; but I am probably more OK with Gomerson than many are. I am losing faith that Escobar's bat will ever come around and think his defense may have been overrated anyway (though I expect that will continue to improve). I am also sick of his off season "training" habits playing winter ball instead of hitting the weights. As others have said, if Jeffress was destined to be a reliever with the Brewers I'm OK with giving him up. The biggest question is short....I'd rather get nobody back than Betancourt. As noted in another thread, our defense will probably be horrible after this move. Lucky our pitching will be top notch!
  24. That might be the dream; but without Escobar, reality would include a terrible defense....realistically it will probably be terrible even if we don't move Hart to CF.
