  1. What is his contract status? Hopefully he is a free agent at the end of the year...
  2. I'm guessing they will cut in on ESPN Radio. If you are in an area that does not get ESPN Radio, Sporting News Radio, Fox Sports Radio, etc like me, XM 175 will be cutting in to its normal baseball talk to cover all of Bonds' ABs.
  3. With Otsuka's injury issues enough to probably scare Melvin away from him, the focus could turn toward Weathers. Weathers is not somebody that you can really look at as "next year's closer", but he could still be a quality RH set up guy down the stretch this year. Complicating any potential deal for Weathers is the fact that he is still signed thru 2008. On the flip side, he should come cheaper than Otsuka.
  4. In fairness, no matter how "easily fillable" those holes are, you need resources to fill those holes. The Brewers have had years and years of rosters compiled of fillable holes, in part due to poor drafting/developing and in part due to lack of resources. Granted, the Twins could have tried to fill a hole with the money spent on Ponson.
  5. Maier was a pretty good college player at Wesleyan College. www.baseball-reference.com/bullpen/Jeffrey_Maier
  6. This would have been a nice day to get Parra's debut in.
  7. If this happens I will eat my first born First born....chicken?
  8. Anyone know what the "injury delay" is in the Cubs game? I'm at work and have no idea. I hate to wish injury on anybody, but in this case I vote for Lilly, Aramis, or Soriano. Edit: Ward. Oh well, I tried.
  9. Could it be that maybe Melvin is trying to make another trade of Gwynn or Mench (or other parts) for bullpen help before announcing this trade? Just a thought. If this rumor has any truth to it, DM could definitely be trying to finalize another trade, so as not to be caught short in the bullpen, etc. However, I just don't think the Brewers would be looking for a player like Dunn. I would think they would be in the market for more of a pure hitter - a guy who consistently hits well avg/ops-wise... not a guy who is power or nothing (even though Dunn does walk a bunch). Jim Powell just reported that the Brewers had a "lengthy staff meeting this morning - something that is unusual for happening prior to a day game" so there may be something going on.
  10. C Jake Fox was the player the Cubs called up. How many catchers do they plan on using this year? He can also play 1B and OF, though.
  11. Who would trade for Jack Wilson?... That is the 8 million dollar question. There's one more element to this deal. It makes room for Ronny Cedeno. I don't see that happening, because Cedeno likely wouldn't get any more playing time that Izturis was getting. But, I've been wrong many, many times before and nothing surprises me with Jim Hendry.
  12. I think it works both ways with chemistry. Sure, the team is constantly changing. But, at the same time, players can look at it as "management is trying to make a run." Granted, trading Izturis doesn't accomplish much other than clearing a spot on the 25-man roster.
  13. Perhaps Jack Wilson is about to be traded.
  14. According to XM, the Cubs just traded Cesar Izturis to the Pirates for a PTBNL.
  15. Like Hall JJ's a bit of a hacker out there Unless you count the first pitch fastball that he never swings at.
  16. How in the world did it get so dirty? I caught a foul ball on Opening Day in 2004 and was surprised by how dirty it was. It looks like the ball in the photo on Ebay. They rub the mud on the balls before every game, but for some reason I didn't think the balls would be so "brown". They always look white to me when I'm watching the game.
  17. See photo of Jarvik here Put a hat on the guy in this link, and I guess I can see it.
  18. Would the Nationals bite on a deal that included one of these pitchers, and would it be enough return for the Brewers to get Cordero? Cappy would be for sure, I gotta believe. Any of those 3 starting pitchers would instantly become Washington's top starter.
  19. Villanueva in the rotation "arguably" makes the rotation better, but it definitely makes the bullpen weaker IMO. Villanueva has been very consistent and very good in the pen. He probably ranks right behind CoCo in terms of consistently getting the job done. Behind CoCo, Villy, and Turnbow (and you could argue Wise), the rest of the bullpen is shaky at best. I wouldn't bump anybody out of the rotation just for the sake of getting Villanueva in it, at the expense of the late innings of the game. There are and will be plenty of teams looking for starting pitching over the next 2 weeks. If Melvin gets a good deal for Vargas, I think he will pull the trigger. If he doesn't get a good deal, he kepts everything the way it is (in terms of the rotation), and I'm very comfortable with that. Fans are starting to panic because the Cubs are 4.5 games back. Its not like they are knocking on the door, and even if they were, there is still 2 1/2 months of baseball left. There are going to be a lot of ups and downs for both teams yet. Luckily, fans don't make personnel decisions.
  20. I would guess that his career .330 average and .418 OB%could make a difference. Call me crazy. Okay Crazy. So, he has a 1-in-3 chance of getting a hit and a 2-in-5 chance of getting on base. In other words, in a one-AB situation, he is not much more likely to make a difference than anybody else that hit that inning. We can't assume that using Pujols in the 9th would have magically won the game for the NL. I'm with you... I would have preferred Pujols with the game on the line (not over Rowand, but perhaps over Hudson). My point is, your fooling yourself if you think LaRussa lost the game by not using Pujols, IMO (and now we're finding out that Pujols may not have even been available).
  21. On paper, the Brewers should be sitting in a pretty good position for next year. However, there are lots of variables that come into play every season. For one thing, the Brewers have been very lucky with injuries this year, particularly in regards to the rotation. I doubt that will happen again next year - heck, there is a lot of season left this year for something to happen. The bottom line IMO is, this is the year. If you plan on next year being better, you are setting yourself up for disappointment. Win now. And, with the trade deadline coming, I think / hope Melvin is feeling the same way.
  22. The game was there to be won and LaRussa blew it. XM is reporting that Pujols was upset and had already changed into street clothes prior to the rally in the 9th. LaRussa wanted to PH with Pujols, but Pujols was not in the dugout. A Cardinals coach went to the clubhouse to get Pujols, but Pujols refused to come back out. I missed the source of the story, but if I hear it again, I'll edit this post to include that info. If that is the case, its hard to blame LaRussa. And besides, how do we know Pujols would have made a difference?
  23. Part of it is probably related to his wrist problems. But, the main factor in my opinion, is the fact that Weeks has not improved in his ability to hit off speed junk. He still swings out in front and/or over the top of most breaking balls and out in front of most changeups. If you were a pitcher, why would you ever throw him a fastball?
