  1. Garza debuted last year with mixed results. The knock on him is that he relies to heavily on his fastball. His ceiling is very high, though, according to the "experts".
  2. I can't watch the game, but I'm listening to Bob and Jim, and there was a lot of cheering going on in the first inning. Sounds like Brewers fans are well represented there today.
  3. My Cubs buddy (is that an oxymoron?) asked me to call him everytime somebody scores. He drives a delivery truck in northern WI and goes in and out of areas where he can get the game the radio. So, I had to call him 3 times that inning, and he still doesn't believe me that the score is 5-0.
  4. The Astros would be lucky to get a guy like Capellan for Lidge Brad Lidge is still a valuable trade piece for Houston. Its going to take a lot more than Jose Capellan to get him IMO. If/when Houston is ready to deal Lidge, they are going to get some very solid prospects at the bare minimum. Teams don't give up on arms like that for nothing. If they did, Turnbow would already be gone.
  5. Catching is too hard to come by to trade Closser for an outfielder of no value, IMO. I would have much rather got a low level prospect for Closser than a guy that has zero chance of playing in the bigs with the Brewers (and he may even struggle to get playing time at Nashville, the way he is(isn't) hitting now. This trade would make more sense to me if Closser was headed to Oakland, but he's not. Then it could be seen as a goodwill move by Melvin. But this is just a lateral move for Closser, with maybe a little bit less between him and the big leagues (considering Piazza was the 3rd catcher in Oakland's chain, and now Closser is - Closser was likely 4th in Milwaukee's chain).
  6. I'm amazed that someone with such a slight build (5'11", 170lb) is able to approach 100mph with his fastball. Think Roy Oswalt. I am looking forward to watching this game Sunday night. Lincecum really handle himself well in camp with Giants and it was only a matter of time before he debuted.
  7. Not sure where the 2-0 pitch missed. Now a lead off walk...not good.
  8. Bad start or not, it will be a good win if CoCo can close it out.
  9. Alright. Get back to scoring some runs. Really gotta have this one with Oswalt going for Houston tomorrow.
  10. How fast can Vargas get warmed up?!
  11. Players like Clark are a dime a dozen. It will be difficult for Melvin to deal him at his salary, IMO. The Brewers will likely have to eat a good portion of his salary in order to get anything of value in return.
  12. I think it would be difficult to trade Hendricksen right now. Other teams know that he is a long shot, to say the least, to make the Brewers out of ST. Any team near the top of the waiver priority list would be best served to wait for the Brewers to try to pass him thru waivers, IMO. That's assuming there are teams that would be interested in carrying him on the big league roster in the first place, which also may be a long shot.
  13. Jones still has a chance to be a decent big leaguer, IMO. After arm injuries / surgeries, it can take some time to get velocity back. His ceiling might be a set up guy, if that, but who amongst us wouldn't take that at this point?
  14. In another thread, I believe it was posted that the Brewers system ranks 5th, according to the new Baseball America Handbook.
  15. I haven't received my book yet, but I read in the Sporting News thread (Major League Forum) that Mark Rogers is still ranked 5th. That surprises me. I don't doubt that he has the talent, but at some point you have to show results, don't you? 2007 looks to be a wasted year with the injury. Having not read his profile yet, I wonder if the BA guys are still projecting Rogers in the Brewers' future rotation, or if they have started to look at him as a reliever (judging by the #5 ranking, they must still be seeing him as a starter - I wish I could - I don't see it happening). Homer Bailey might find himself in the big leagues at some point in 2007, and Rogers can't get himself out of A ball (Bailey was a more advanced pitcher coming out of high school, though). Rogers is about to turn 21 in a couple of days, so there's lots of time left for him, but I'd really like to see some results.
  16. I liked the first caption that was placed on the screen: JUAN NIEVES First Brewers No Hitter This Year Quickly changed to: JUAN NIEVES First Brewers No Hitter In History
  17. The guy to trade to the Marlins is Gwynn. He is the only one that could be traded to Florida, since the Marlins have made it clear they are looking for a young CF (which eliminates Clark). I guess I can't blame them. They need to find a "CF of the future" type player, and none of their in-house players qualify as that most likely (Reed, Abercrombie, etc). But, I dont' see the Brewers trading Gwynn now, unless they were bowled over by the offer from Florida. However, if Hall proves he can be a good centerfielder, I'm not sure there is room on the Brewers for Gwynn, at least not for a couple of years.
  18. Wow... that was a long way to hit a baseball - foul again (Floyd Rayford's AB).
  19. This may explain why Yount dives for the last catch, even though he may not have had to. Yount has commented on that play several times over the past 20 years. He admits that he didn't need to dive. According to Yount, he dove because it gave him the best chance to catch the ball cleanly. The ball was moving away from him, and he was afraid that it could skip off the end of his glove.
  20. Looooooong Goooone, Greg Brock.
  21. After the Angels cut him, he was LUCKY to find work in St. Louis!!! He can thank some guy named Sidney Ponson being equally bad (DFA'd to make room for Weaver).
  22. Jeff Weaver wants 4 years and $40 Million. Can't blame him in this market. I don't think he'll get it though. If I was Jeff Weaver, I'd take the best offer the Cardinals make and run back to STL. If that's only a one year deal, so be it. I would work with Dave Duncan again, and then hit the market again when the contract was up. Weaver had a fair amount of success after he got picked up by the Cardinals last year. If he can keep that going, he could be worthy of another big contract a year or two from now. He's not worthy of it now, IMO.
  23. I like Pena quite a bit, and I don't even think they would have to give up Cordero to get him. Right. Why give up Cordero, when Turnbow and another player (perhaps from the surplus of OFs) could possibly get it done. The Brewers are not in a position to trade Cordero, IMO (see August 2006 - no reliable RPs except for Cordero).
