  1. I think the Yankees are still planning on having Pettitte return to the fold, somehow, even though he rejected their one year offer yesterday. If they don't retain him, they'll probably just let Hughes and Kennedy and whoever else they have battle it out for the fifth spot.
  2. I personally can't picture Weeks at third at all. I don't think he has the arm for it.
  3. If Sheets were to end up with the Yankees (and I don't think he will), and the Brewers only get a fourth round comp pick, the Brewers should sue MLB or something.
  4. And was he really "forced", or did he decide to play through it himself? For all we know, he could have lied to Yost and company about how much it was bothering him, so they wouldn't put him on the DL. Not saying he did, but to say management forced him to play through some intense injury seems to be inaccurate, IMHO.
  5. Which some people say was unncecessary, but I think is a bit of a ridiculous assertion. I was a bit young to remember seeing that game on TV, but I used to have a copy of "What's Brewing" magazine with Nieves on the cover. I believe it said "Toast of the Town" or something on it. Would love to see a scan of that if anyone has it.
  6. I don't know. All players get hurt, generally, at one point or another in their career. How long can people keep pointing to one injury as the cause of his inadequate defense and below "potential" offense?
  7. Based on what? They won 90 games, in my opinion, they were a 90 win team. If nothing else, they probably lost more games than they should have last year, especially in September.
  8. Maybe the Brewers could offer Hoffman a one year deal with a second year option that vests if he appears a certain number of times or something?
  9. Oh yeah, that's right. Can't believe I forgot his name off hand.
  10. I'm totally blanking right now...who was paired with Uke before Powell?
  11. Anything of note said? I don't usually bother to listen to WTMJ anymore since there seems to be a greater than 50% chance that I'll be hearing a commercial any given time I tune in.
  12. Yeah, I remember Kevin Kennedy giving that exact same explanation on XM. I think they mentioned that there was one backup catcher with a team (Pirates?) years ago who was left handed, but that was the only one they could come up with. Actually, a web search turns up that there were apparently a few lefty catchers in baseball history, but most played in the pre-1900 era.
  13. That seems to be fairly accurate at this juncture.
  14. So this means he won't be on FSN this year?
  15. Yeah, I totally agree with that line of thinking at this point. Bradley is a player who makes no sense for the Brewers, so if the Cubs want him, who cares? And as far as the Cards and Astros not getting better, that seems to be the way this off-season is going, at least so far. If Melvin can make just one or two key moves yet this off-season, there's no reason the Brewers can't be strong contenders for the Wild Card again.
  16. I doubt it's archived. I was just listening to 540's stream from their website. Maybe Haudricourt will do a blog on the JSonline site later. Probably overdue, really, since other than the Turnbow story, he hasn't posted anything since before Christmas.
  17. Yeah, that's a good point. At some point, I would think "enough is enough" with the glut of draft picks. Giving up one to get a quality reliever shouldn't be that big of a deal long term, I wouldn't think.
  18. Mentioned today is the first day of arbitration filing, and Tom H. predicts Melvin's string of not going to arbitration hearings is almost certainly going to be broken with Prince Fielder. Also reasserted that the rumors about Matt Cain and the stuff with the Twins were generated by press and internet sites, and there wasn't any real substance to them.
  19. Still saying Cameron might be trading to the Yankees. Haudricourt says the Yankees will likely come back to the Brewers before spring training to get it done, mentioning CC would love to have Mike in center fielder.
  20. See, again, that's my fear...it's probably just Boras doing the usual rumor starting to make LA or whoever think Milwaukee is getting in on him...maybe even making the Brewers think Lowe is interested. Then he just ends up signing elsewhere, and Milwaukee ends up being used yet again.
  21. One interesting point brought up is that with Melvin having relied on finding "diamonds in the rough" for so long, it might be getting harder for them to take that route with the position they're in now. So far nothing earth shattering said, but again, just nice to hear some Brewers talk going on. Then again, what else will they talk about? The Favre and Packers angles have been beaten to death over the past week.
  22. He just said Melvin doesn't think they will get Looper. Though given how quiet that front has been, I'm not surprised. They're discussing Sheets and still think he will end up with the Rangers. Says they "love Juan Cruz", but sounds like they don't want to give up a first rounder if they sign him. Briefly touched on Hoffman, but doesn't sound promising there. It's sooooo refreshing to hear some new Brewers talk after the last couple quiet weeks, though!
  23. League average players are extremely valuable. A team of all league average players and then Braun and Gallardo is a playoff team to put it in perspective. What you don't want to settle for is players who are replacement level. Dumb question: Can someone define "replacement level?" I see that thrown around here all the time, but I don't adequately understand what it means.
  24. I am not big stat guy, but I thought someone on this board basically proved that batting leadoff or not basically has no effect on a player's offensive performance. That aside, I agree that I hope Macha considers other options for the 1 spot in 2009.
  25. My fear is that the Brewers actually are (or will) get into the bidding, and it is just a ploy by Boras to get a team like the Dodgers to pay what they really want. Then it ends up like the CC thing where Melvin is waiting weeks to hear from a guy we have no realistic chance to acquire. I'd have no problem paying Lowe say 3 yrs and $40-45 million or so. He has basically no injury history and should be good for a 3.4-ish ERA for at least a couple more years. I just don't think he really wants to come to Milwaukee...probably yet another case where geographically, Milwaukee is just screwed.
