  1. Badger board? I hope that's not the same thing as Badger blogger...
  2. Isn't he with the Pirates now?
  3. Wouldn't it make more sense to include Bill Hall in the deal then, so the money the Brewers would be taking on with Igawa isn't a big factor?
  4. I think Saito would be worth the risk. Before his injury issues, he was one of the best relievers in all of baseball. I would guess he would probably want to stay on the west coast, though.
  5. There is little to no doubt in my mind that this trade is nothing more than a salary dump and that Attanassio has been killed by the falling stock market. You've got nothing to base this on, and has been pointed out, it's not like the players salaries are coming out of Attanasio's pocket, or being funded by his other buisnesses.
  6. I would rather still sign somebody, and have Villanueva as a fallback, than try to have him start as closer, and have no realistic fallback if he fails (Riske? McClung?).
  7. Yeah...at least this isn't like the '02/'03/04 era where the club basically couldn't do anything (other than trade a star like Sexson for parts).
  8. This is where I disagree... If I'm given the opportunity to set up my entire extended family for life instead of just a subset of them, that's pretty important to me. I'm sure athletes don't spend all this money in a vacuum, donating big chunks to charity and investing back in the community. Exactly. He could, for example, take 10 or 20 million of that and donate that to a bunch of local schools in his home town. Not saying he couldn't do that with what the Brewers are paying...but an extra 60 million makes it a lot easier. I don't fault CC for taking that huge amount of money...I fault MLB for allowing one team to spend so wantonly without any negative consequences.
  9. Well, Sheets leaving is probably most on him. It sounds like he's set on leaving. There's no point in Melvin making him some token offer that Sheets isn't even going to consider. It's a lot different than when Bando made a ridiculous low ball offer to Molitor, and let him walk to the Blue Jays to help them win the World Series the very next year.
  10. That's a good point...if they sign Sheets, they wouldn't be able to sign Manny or Tex, right?
  11. Hey all. Just wondering if there's ever a chance BF.net will have a Windows mobile compatible or "lo-fi" version available? It would be pretty sweet to be able to read and post on BF.net from my smart phone. Just an idea.
  12. I have no doubt that they will be getting one more pitcher to round out the rotation. They have to, and Melvin knows it. Maybe it will just be an older veteran like Randy Johnson, but they'll get someone.
  13. Great post, danzig. I agree 100%, pretty much. The only way I see anything changing in baseball if a majority of the ownerships finally get fed up with teams like the Yankees buying up all the best players. I really don't see that happening anytime soon, since I think most teams are doing very well financially, as you mentioned.
  14. It's gotta be easy being a Yankees fan, that's for sure. Also, is Brian Cashman actually a good GM? It doesn't seem like it would be that hard to just throw 8 and 9 figure salaries at the best players available, and bid against yourself to get them...
  15. Yeah, I'm not sure why the Dunn front has been so quiet either. You'd think there would be at least a few teams looking at him...maybe he's just flying under the radar since Ramirez and Teixeira are still out there.
  16. ESPN Radio will maybe give a little boost to 100.5. Boy, that station has been through a lot of changes the past few years...remember when they used to have Howard Stern? And a couple years ago, they were Madison's Bob & Brian affiliate.
  17. Cubs fans are delusional. Any chance the Brewers could get in on him yet, or is it basically certain he will not accept a trade to Milwaukee? Seems kind of silly, since there is not a huge difference between Milwaukee and Chicago, other than the fact that the Brewers have a much nicer ballpark, and the Cubs like to spend their ridiculous payroll unwisely.
  18. Yeah, but how often can you get any kind of decent SP for just a 2 year deal? You can't always build from within (especially with pitching)...sometimes a team has to make a chance and spend more than just peanuts on a guy to try to field anything competitive. I agree in retrospect that the Suppan signing was probably a mistake (even though I supported it at the time), but hindsight is 20/20. Also, I don't think you can say he can't bounce back next year. He was hurt, but he'll have a lot of recovery time this off season. No reason he can't get back to his '06/'07 type levels, at least.
  19. That is definitely one thing to keep in mind...one of the biggest free agent signings ever for the Brewers (Suppan), didn't happen 'til almost Christmas one year. Now, the merits of that signing can be debated all day...but the fact is Melvin still has a ton of time to make moves.
  20. Well, the Burnitz trade was pretty bad in retrospect. Fortunately, I don't think Melvin will make any moves that extreme. I wouldn't say he's obsessed with left handed hitting or anything like that, though...the fact is that other than Prince, the Brewers had no decent lefty bats last year. I think that's worth rectifying if you don't have to give up the farm to get it.
  21. I don't know...I get the feeling that if Cabrera is on the Brewers, he's going to play CF most of the time. Griffey is in the twilight of his career...he didn't look that great last year, and is definitely not a CF at this point. I hope he maybe goes somewhere like Seattle where he can be a 4th OF and maybe DH some, then call it a career, personally.
  22. Hah...that reminds me of a throw I probably would have made in tee ball league.
  23. Yeah...I am no expert, but I would say the Brewers are probably about an 80 win team right now. Just kind of a hunch.
  24. The big culprits as far as absorbing their revenue sharing dollars are (reportedly) the Pirates, Royals, and Marlins. I'm sure there's a couple others, but those are the big ones...and those teams really don't have any excuses, especially the Pirates, with their new stadium.
  25. It's not like Yankees fans are going to be completely ignorant of his past health issues. There's a reason we're not hearing rumors left and right about teams interested in him...no one is eager to take on the risk associated with his injury history.
