  1. I don't know if I'd call Hart "lackadaisical", but you can't pretend he's a gold glover either. He's still young, and hopefully will still improve as an OF.
  2. He has been reported as one of the most well liked guys in MLB, so there is some truth to what you're saying. Actually I heard him earlier this evening on MLB on XM with Kevin Kennedy and he just seems really laid back and easy to get along with.
  3. I think 5 million is probably overpaying a bit, given the severity of what he is coming off of. But then again, it's not like the BoSox can't afford it.
  4. At this point Sheets is probably the best available free agent pitcher left on the market who the Brewers could realistically get. I would not cry if he never pitches for the Brewers again, but like I said before, if they can get him for a reasonable price, I don't see a reason not to do it. As far as the financial aspect, I have a hard time believing the Brewers can't afford it given all the reports we've heard on their rosy financial outlook and new deal with Potawatomie (sp?).
  5. No, it just means you'll hear Uke refer to that ad nauseum on the radio.
  6. Anyone here a Yankees official's line about Attanasio having "sour grapes"? Their arrogance doesn't seem to ever end.
  7. I don't get the fascination with Garland. He seems pretty "meh", to me. I too, would rather see the Brewers go after Wolf, but I think his performance with the Astros last season maybe priced him out of the Brewers' pocketbooks. I think the best situation would be to trade for Peavy, but that is just a pipe dream at this point.
  8. I have been hard on Sheets on this board (not as much as some), but if Melvin could sign him to a 1 or 2 year deal for a reasonable amount, I'd be fine with it. Unless the team suspects that he won't be able to pitch a large portion of the season due to his injury, but we haven't gotten any indication to that effect.
  9. If we make the playoffs (and hopefully World Series) with him being a major part, then I hope they do http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif I like the signing...it's a relatively low risk contract for the Brewers. If he's great and they have to pay him a little bit extra, then so what? I also like that it creates a bit of depth and the team doesn't have to go into spring training and have a "closer competition" or something.
  10. Well, I don't think you could definitively say Milwaukee is a hot free agent destination or something, but at least it will prove again that guys are willing to come to Milwaukee if the dollars are right. Ultimately it probably just means that the Brewers are giving Hoffman the better opportunity to play the position he wants (closer), where the Dodgers can't realistically guarantee that.
  11. jjfan, good point about the catching. It sounds like they are sick of Boras' antics and are more than ready to move on from Varitek, since they are demanding silly amounts for a catcher who is aging rapidly. Trading for a young catcher like Saltalamacchia would make them quite solid going forward.
  12. Opening Day is so much fun...why would anyone sell their tickets unless they absolutely can't go? At least sell them to other Brewers fans...
  13. Looks like he will end up with Boston according to MLBTR.
  14. I wouldn't mind bringing Gagne back if he was cheap enough, to be honest. He sure as heck isn't going to get $10 million/yr from anyone again. Also, MLBTraderumors has been updating this a lot. They say it looks like it's nearing being a done deal, and that it would be a one year guaranteed with an "option for 2010," according to MLB.com. Interesting that it might not necessarily be two years guaranteed like many of us were assuming.
  15. I wonder who that could possibly be, if they indeed have someone in mind.
  16. Wait? The Wii has an HDMI out? I didn't realize that. I thought it just had the proprietary connector. Anyway, I have our Wii hooked up with component video cables and the 480p looks fine. With the Wii, the 480p isn't a huge step up from 480i, but it should smooth things out a bit on an HD capable set. I really don't get why they couldn't have this system do HD resolutions, but whatever.
  17. When you're trying to make the playoffs for the first time in 26 years, a team isn't going to be as concerned with babying their starting pitchers. That's just the way it is. If they had sat Sheets a few games and we had missed out on making the playoffs due to having to start Villy or McClung excessively, it still would have been a no win situation. Also, you use "management" as a pretty vague blanket term. Who are you actually referring to? Melvin? Yost? Mike Maddux? Mark Attanasio? Maybe it was a conspiracy where they wanted him to break his arm and never pitch again so they could all laugh at him. Then again, we could take the opposite approach and say that maybe Sheets should have had himself in better shape after three consecutive injury riddled seasons.
  18. Sounds like the Red Sox are close to signing Smoltz.
  19. Was Yost also responsible for all his previous injuries? Come on...I think pointing the finger at the manager for a guy getting hurt is pretty weak.
  20. I tend to agree. Just give the guy two years guaranteed and get it done so the team at least has some amount of certainty in the bullpen going forward.
  21. Agreed. "CC doesn't want to play in NY, the Brewers have a good shot at keeping him" "Wait, no he's going to NY." "Mike Cameron is about to be traded, giving the Brewers payroll flexibility to sign a pitcher, should be done very soon" "Wait, no it's not going to happen." "Braden Looper is very close to signing, could get done tonight" "Wait, no, nevermind, it's not going to happen." "Hoffman and the Brewers have mutual interest and are working on a deal, should get done today or tomorrow" "Waiiiiit..." Throw in Jim Powell probably leaving the broadcast booth (hell, Jeff Cirillo I think is gone too) and it just seems like the Brewers franchise is getting the proverbial teeth kicked in left and right.
  22. He's OK. I don't know if you could automatically pencil him into the closer's spot, though.
  23. Can we just get some good news already? Boy, if Hoffman does sign with LA, this is going to continue a disappointing trend this winter.
  24. I believe that's an old rule that was done away with.
