  1. Goodness. We can put 16 pitchers out there for all I care, I don't trust anyone in our bullpen except Torres.
  2. Glaus would look good in a sombrero right about now.
  3. Clearly, that point to the sky was meant to show up the Brewers.
  4. Carlos pumped his fist in excitement, which is clearly in violation of the way the Cardinals have decided the game of baseball is supposed to be played. Pujols yelled at him from the on-deck circle, Prince and Carlos yelled back, and the home plate umpire had to separate them.
  5. Are you crazy? This is a two game swing depending on if we win or lose, up either 3 1/2 or 5 1/2, Ned would have to be a complete moron to hit anyone on purpose in a two run game in the 8th inning. Ah, if only. Though if we were up, say, 12-0, I certainly wouldn't mind trotting McClung out there to do some beaning again.
  6. This self-righteous, sanctity-of-the-game crap that the Cardinals always pull is really getting old.
  7. We've parked at St. Mark's Lutheran Church every time we've been there. It's right by the stadium, and they ask for a $20 donation to their youth group. They open up the school too so you can use the bathroom while you're tailgating.
  8. The Fox & Hounds out in Hubertus - great food and Monday through Friday they have a buy one entree get one free deal that covers everything except lobster (we got two large, great steaks with bread, side, and soup/salad for $25). And I've always been a big fan of Mama Mia's (or just Mama's, as the one on 76th and Burleigh is now known) as well. We always just go for the pizza, garlic bread, and salad, but I hear the other stuff is very good too.
  9. Brian, that might be one of the best avatar's I've ever seen.
  10. That's because he played college football at Nebraska! He is super-duper intense and a leader and every team wants him even though he hits for crap! No, it does not matter that he was a punter. Being on a football field makes you gritty and intense no matter where you play! I also am tired of Eckstein. To me, sprinting to first base on a walk is just as much of a "look at me" thing as staring down a home run you just hit. Why else are you doing it if not to draw attention to yourself? And yes, I would say the same thing about Pete Rose too.
  11. Yeah that was insane...although my (immaturely) favorite part of the story is that the governing body that's recommending his lifetime ban is referred to as the W. T. F. (World Taekwando Federation, of course).
  12. I coach basketball as well, and there's a big difference between the sports. In general, I've found cross country runners to be a harder working bunch who don't need to be "punished" very often, if at all. There are also natural consequences for not doing what you're supposed to in CC. If you fall off on a run, you have to run by yourself, which sucks. If you're lazy in practice, you're going to suck at meets. I think in general, there's more of a sense of team and community in CC, and if you are lazy or a jerk or whatever, you're usually not part of it. Things kind of take care of themselves that way most of the time. Of course, if you have to, you can always add repeats during a hard workout. Everybody tires out eventually.
  13. Sorry, I hadn't heard of Granton before, and being from the Milwaukee area, I just assumed it was Grafton. Here's a rough outline of a typical week for us in CC. Monday - long day (50-60 min.) Tuesday - 40 min. or so, situps or pushups afterwards Wednesday - workout - 800 or 1000m repeats at race pace Thursday - recovery - 30-40 min. easy, situps or pushups afterwards Friday - recovery / pre-race - 20-30 minutes easy Saturday - race Sunday - off Obviously, things change if you have a meet during the week, and workouts get scaled back a bit as you get into October and the championship part of the season (conference and sectional/state meets), but this is a pretty good template. You can mix things up too...sometimes instead of just running, we'd run two miles to a park and play ultimate frisbee there for awhile, that gives you a pretty good workout. A few times, we put people in groups of 4, got disposable cameras, and gave everybody a list of 10 random objects they had to get a picture of sometime on their run, like a picture scavenger hunt. Sometimes we'd go on real scavenger hunts, although that was usually on our own, and not necessarily with the coach's knowledge. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif Little things like that help break up the routing sometimes and are fun. Anyway, good luck! If you get a chance, let me/us know how you're doing.
  14. They are stripped of the world record. Probably the most famous example is Ben Johnson of Canada at the 1988 Seoul Olympics. It's happened in recent years with American sprinters Tim Montgomery and Justin Gatlin. An entire US 4x4 relay team was just stripped of a world record from several years back because one of the members admitted to PED use. I have always wondered what the record book would look like if testing was as stringent and methods were as sophisticated back in the day. The East German "women" still have several world records in track and I think a few in swimming (although I could be wrong about the last one).
  15. I'd agree that it's too soon to call anyone from Sunny best ever. I was thinking of the best characters out there right now when I named them.
  16. From the same episode brucrustu quoted: "Everybody has their sanctuary Lois. Catholics have church, fat people have Wisconsin, and I have the Pawtucket Brewery!"
  17. Dwight Schrute from The Office Brian Griffin from Family Guy All the guys from It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia
  18. Yeah, it's been kind of disappointing for the US. I hope Lagat and Tegenkamp can give a good showing in the 5K. And we should have a good chance of medaling in the decathlon too. I really want to see the 4x1 finals...if Bolt runs all out and Powell can get his head out of his rear at a big meet for once, that WR will be going down too. I was (and still am) a huge Michael Johnson fan. After his Beamon-esque performance in the 200 in 1996, I remember reading that scientists who study the human body and athletics and such had projected that no one would run 19.32 or thereabouts until several years into the next century. Looks like they were right. Johnson's race will always be more memorable in my mind (the huge buildup, running in front of a home crowd, and just destroying the world record that night), but Bolt deserves his due. Also...as if I needed another reason to want to move to Jamaica...these Olympics have done it. Sun, surf, rum, and track...what more could a guy like me want in a country? http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  19. Are you the head cross country coach? Or an assistant? I'm an assistant CC coach at the school I teach at...mostly I just go on the runs with the kids, encourage them, keep them positive, and help out the head coach with splits and race planning. It's pretty fun and there isn't really any prep work or anything like that. If you're the head coach, there's more to do...season planning, workout planning, etc. Is Grafton a combined program? Or are there separate boys and girls coaches? If there are, the other coach can probably help you get started and provide you with VDOT charts and whatnot to help you plan some things.
  20. Bert: Son of a (not sure if I can use the word here or not), I'm on my way. Some poor bastard got his head blown off down at a place called Hoopers. Ernie: Hey Bert, I uh, wish you wouldn't drink so much, Bert. Bert: Well, Ernie, I wish you'd stop eating cookies in the damn bed!
  21. UGH. I remember getting to the cashier at a Pick n Save in Waukesha with a case of beer at 8:52 PM only to be told that the clocks on their registers were all set 8 minutes fast. If the state's going to have that dumb law, they should at least make stores give people the full amount of time the law prescribes.
  22. I recall someone from Wisco (maybe the AD?) telling me that there was some sort of threshold or amount by which a school had to change or alter a logo, and then it was OK. I think it was 30%, as in, if a high school takes a college logo and changes it by 30%, it's OK for them to use as their own logo without any copyright infringement problems. I have no idea how anyone decides what's 30% different, but that is stuck in my mind. He said Wisco has received a phone call or letter from Wisconsin every year that they've been involved in the state championship game for football because their logo gets printed in the Madison paper. But he said that since we've added an L and changed the colors, we have nothing to worry about. It sounds kind of weird, but he's pretty on top of things, so I trust what he's saying. http://www.wihsfb.com/Wisco.bmp
  23. Kudos to Walter Dix picking up the bronze. Wonder if he thought he had any chance 48 hours ago. Side note: in the 2007 NCAA Indoors, Dix stumbled at the 60m start, costing FSU ten points and allowing Wisconsin to take the NCAA title. I remember that...the same thing happened to the HS team I coach at our Indoor Conference Meet a few weeks later...except it was two of our guys that false started and cost us 18 points. We still managed to win the meet, however. Hooray, depth! Anyway, glad to see there's at least one other track junkie on here. And the gymnastics judges prove their incompetence/bias once again. Had Alicia Sacramone been born in a different country, she'd probably have a medal. That's the biggest thing I hate about the Olympics...so many "sports" where judges determine who wins. There's so much room for subjectivity and corruption, and it seems like the judges are rarely, if ever, called on it by someone who matters. I just ignore stuff like gymnastics, figure skating, etc. now because it all seems so bogus to me. I know there can be bad/corrupt officials in other sports that can impact the outcome, but they can't determine the outcome by themselves (insert Donaghy joke here). A ref or umpire might make a bad call, but they can't say, "Oh, I didn't think that home run was majestic enough, you only get half a run for that."
  24. www.firetomhaudricourt.com? How about it? (Tongue-in-cheek. Mostly. Sorta.) Actually, this might be something that a place like Deadspin would jump on, seeing as how they like to rip the mainstream media. I'm sure a few of their commenters would let him have it.
