  1. LinkI am going to scream if the team trades JJ Hardy and keeps Rickie Weeks. That is absolute Bizarro World territory.
  2. My finger is inching toward the panic button, primarily because of the starting rotation. Oh, and the bullpen. And 3B. The perennial Rickie problem, too. Otherwise, though, things look pretty good.
  3. And yet the principal at my daughter's school basically will not allow them inside the school before the morning bell, no matter what the weather conditions are. We could be talking single digits, plus wind chill, and they are stuck outside, shivering. It's unbelievable. We complained last year, and she claims to have some MMSD-issued "chart" which dictates what's tolerable, and what's not, in terms of temp and wind chill. Of course the chart references what's safe for adults, not five- and six-year olds. (Sorry for the rant, but this particular thing really bugs me.)
  4. A relatively flat, coaster-type, magnetic cup holder for the roof of your car, right above the driver's seat. Something that would stabilize/hold your coffee while you're fumbling with keys, etc.
  5. I drive from Madison to Oshkosh on Tuesdays and Thursdays to teach, and I've gone ahead and pulled the plug on my classes for tomorrow. It is looking brutal.
  6. Yeah, it will be a de facto package deal, somewhere down the road. (Dude hit .363 in 1971 and ran away with the NL MVP. But career BA of .297 just isn't going to get it done unless you've got 500+ HR.)
  7. IIRC, we had an extended Nolan Ryan discussion in another thread, and I came away from that less impressed with his overall numbers. Lots of K's, but soooooooo many walks .....
  8. I'm a little uneasy with the number of eggs that people are willing to put into the Gallardo basket. (Don't get me wrong. I think he has the potential to be a top-of-the-rotation guy for years to come. He's a great young arm.)
  9. I saw that on the list and wondered, too. I am assuming that he explains pitching a no-hitter on acid, and then hitting like 6 consecutive batters the next time he tried it.
  10. What's funny is that he used to make fun of Kendall and his contract, saying it was ridiculous for a "singles-hitting catcher." As in . . . every single time the Brewers played the Pirates. (Not that JP was wrong about that -- it just got be like a broken record. That, and the location of the press box in Pittsburgh.)
  11. I know a little about the beginning of Moose's career. I'm from suburban Baltimore, and I went to a high school in the same conference as Moose's (Franklin High School). As it happened, he was in the middle of his MLB career by that point --prime-time for adoration by the kids in our league. Whenever there was a pitching prospect, someone inevitably compared him to Moose. This happened to my teammate, Jeff Nelson, who in fact did go on and have a decent MLB run.
  12. I'd vote for Nine Innings,by Daniel Okrent. Attempts to tell the story of baseball through a 1982 game between the Brewers and Orioles. (Older book, but looks like it's back in print.) I'm not sure it qualifies as "light," but it's really compelling reading.
  13. I think I might be the only person in the history of BF.net not to express unbridled love for JP.
  14. Wait, I am amending my earlier statement regarding his merits as a potential member of the HOF. The NY Times ran a nice piece on him yesterday, and it included this factoid: Moose frequently wore vintage 80's t-shirts, including one bearing the slogan, "Abe Froman: Sausage King of Chicago."
  15. I'd at least give him points for going out (somewhat?) on top and not trying to eke his way to 300 wins.
  16. Based on the typical benchmarks (not saying that they are legit), I'd have to say "no" for Cooperstown. No 300 wins, no Cy Young Award, 20 wins only once, only a 5-time All Star. A very good career, but not quite HOF material.
  17. If Jason Varitek had Joe Mauer's numbers, he would have gotten every single first-place vote. (Hell, they might even have decided to name the MVP award after him.)
  18. Well put. You would have thought he had learned his lesson after this summer's debacle.
  19. What I dislike about the "it's not 'most outstanding player'" argument is the alternative -- the kind of jumbled and inconsistent reasoning that you find with TH. I just don't understand how you can base your judgment of a player's individual performance by giving so much weight to how the other 24+ guys on his team performed (and in the last couple months of the season, no less). Seriously: how can you vote for six guys from the NL Central and not even put Berkman on your ballot?
  20. That TH ballot is an abomination. Good grief. How can you say that Ludwick and Pujols basically had the same year? Aramis Ramirez? Good year, on a good team, but he shouldn't even have been in the conversation. And, finally: three Brewers in the top nine?
  21. It didn't look as though his bid to buy the Cubs was going anywhere, anyway, but this might seal the deal. From the Wall Street Journal: The Securities and Exchange Commission filed insider trading charges against Mark Cuban, the outspoken owner of the Dallas Mavericks, for allegedly dumping shares in Mamma.com upon learning it was raising money in a private offering. The SEC alleges in a civil action that Mr. Cuban sold his entire 6% ownership stake on June 28, 2004, after learning that Mamma.com was raising money through a private investment in a public entity, or PIPE. The next day, on June 29, the company announced the PIPE financing and shares of the company dropped by more than 10%. By selling his stake, the SEC alleges, Mr. Cuban avoided more than $750,000 in losses.
  22. I'm wary. I guess I can understand that the sheer number of IP might be the equivalent of spring training, etc., but Yo's circumstances are somewhat unique. Plus, I would worry about the possible lack of adult supervision. If this guy is your young, somewhat fragile, de facto #1 starter, I'm not sure you want to let him out of your immediate control, baseball-wise.
  23. I think Gardenhire did a great job, but I can't imagine voting for him over Maddon (as one voter apparently did).
  24. I'm stoked. It would be worth having even if they simply offered an alternative to BBTN. (I swear, if I have to hear that one dude say "The Nation" again in reference to the Red Sox, I am going throw my TV out the window.)
  25. Should we maybe start a general MLB Network thread? Or is there one already?
