  1. I agree, esp. as it relates to Escobar and Hardy.
  2. That would be apocalyptic, in terms of media coverage. It would pretty much blot out everything else in MLB for awhile. I mean, can you fathom the ESPN coverage of Manny becoming a Yankee?
  3. So I jump ship in Hong Kong and make my way over to Tibet, and I get on as a looper at a course over in the Himalayas. A looper, you know, a caddy, a looper, a jock. So, I tell them I'm a pro jock, and who do you think they give me? The Dalai Lama, himself. Twelfth son of the Lama. The flowing robes, the grace, bald… striking. So, I'm on the first tee with him. I give him the driver. He hauls off and whacks one - big hitter, the Lama - long, into a ten-thousand foot crevasse, right at the base of this glacier. Do you know what the Lama says? Gunga galunga… gunga, gunga-galunga. So we finish the eighteenth and he's gonna stiff me. And I say, "Hey, Lama, hey, how about a little something, you know, for the effort, you know." And he says, "Oh, uh, there won't be any money, but when you die, on your deathbed, you will receive total consciousness." So I got that goin' for me, which is nice.
  4. Depending on the contract, I think it's probably OK. The rotation definitely needs some bolstering. Also, it would harm the Cards, which is a good thing.
  5. This issue seems to keep coming up in various pitching and FA-related threads, and I can't say that I'm entirely convinced, one way or the other. I think Yo, Manny, Bush, Suppan, and McClung have to the potential to be just fine -- all of them certainly have the potential to throw 150+ decent innings. But I also think they have the potential to collectively implode -- Bush and Suppan were horrible at times last year, McClung is a retread who couldn't even nail down the #5 spot last year, and none of them has proven to be in the same class as CC and Sheets. (Really, only Manny had a good season as a starter last year.) Is this a serious issue or no? Will they be competent?
  6. I don't mind seeing this deal going down the drain, but I did like the idea of freeing up some cash in order to acquire another quality SP. If the planets stay perfectly aligned, I think the rotation (as presently constituted) can work out just fine, but . . .boy . . . if anybody gets hurt or seriously slumps . . .
  7. In 2006, he got demoted to AAA but apparently refused to report for awhile. Someone in the Post-Gazette wrote: "At 26, if his head is right, he still has time to salvage his career." From BR Bullpen: "Duffy was assigned to Indianapolis on May 14 beginning a weird series of events. He refused to report to the AAA team. Reasons given in the press initially focused on anger at management's tinkering with his swing (based on quotes given by Duffy), though Chris later denied this and said he had lost his joy in playing baseball and contemplated not returning. It was clear that the demotion was not the major issue, though. He did not speak directly to the press during this episode, nor to team officials. The Pirates placed him on the restricted list, denying him income. Almost a month later, Duffy decided to report to Indianapolis." And this: "Duffy joined the Mazatlan Deer for the winter of 2008 but left after 3 games without notifying his team; he bought a plane ticket and returned home. He said that he was having trouble with the food." (added link --1992)
  8. I was just trying to work out the possibilities. (It seems unlikely to me that DM would sign Kotsay if he was going to keep Cameron, but I could be wrong; it wouldn't be the first time.)
  9. Kotsay = the definition of average. OPS+ for career is . . . 99. What's interesting is that his numbers v. RH and LH pitching are not wildly different for his career. (Worse against LHP, but he's not a total stiff.) vs. RHP: .282/.340/.418 vs. LHP: .270/.327/.405 I guess he'd be ok, but I don't totally understand the concept here. Do you think he'd sign to be a 4th OF? If not, is the idea: Braun in LF, Corey in RF or CF, Kotsay in CF or RF, with Melky being the 4th OF?
  10. Yeah, this made me shake my head, too. The name choice was purely an attention-getting mechanism for the father. Ordinarily, I wouldn't care, but he's gonna make his poor kid suffer for his own stupidity.
  11. I'm getting nervous about what's left out there. I know it's not even January, but ....
  12. No. The guy has managed to play just 47 and 97 games the last two years, and not especially well. He's a trip to the DL just waiting to happen. And I agree about the lack of OBP -- .258 and .314 the last two years. We don't need more of that....
  13. I signed up, too -- but I won't spend actual $$. I'm just trying to figure it out now. (Team is Madison Marginals, if anyone wants to challenge.)
  14. What's the story with Brad Penny? Is his arm completely fried?
  15. Seeing the pic of Vlad on the Jeter sample page made me laugh, but I know it's just a mock-up. Should be very cool when it's up...

  17. If you were going to trade Fielder (for a SP), couldn't you put Wigginton at 1B? (I am not advocating, just wondering.)
  18. Ty Wigginton in '08: .285/.350./.526 with 23 HR in 111 games. Is the "D" so bad that we couldn't live with those numbers?
  19. Too bad that it probably won't be covered very much by ESPN, etc. We'll probably have to scour the Web the next day to find any mention.
  20. I just wonder about about running Rickie and Cabrera out there, day after day. There's only so much screaming at the TV that one guy can do....
  21. Looks like a QB changing his mind in mid-pass or something.
  22. Could not agree more. I am fine with the occasional scrap heap reclamation project, but I think it's going to be difficult to compete with an entire bullpen of cast-offs and a potentially wobbly starting rotation.
  23. Cabrera just turned 24 in August, no? He's not terrible, and he still has time to figure it out. (Not the most ringing endorsement, I know.) I wouldn't say that it was especially urgent to move Cameron, but I hope that the $$$ savings will be plowed into starting pitching.
