  1. I checked my blog this morning and saw that a posting on a controversial topic had been deleted. I've never accidentally deleted anything previously; in fact, I've never deleted anything. Just to see how complicated it was, I tried to delete an old and boring posting from last year. All kinds of "Are you sure you want to delete this?" prompts came up. After seeing that, I am 99.99% convinced that I didn't somehow do it accidentally. I am not by nature a conspiracy theorist, but I am wondering if there's any way to check if someone hacked into my blog.
  2. I don't know if comparing AL ERA to NL ERA is exactly apples-to-apples. The ERA+ numbers are: 119, 108, 97, 87 (Suppan) 128, 105, 112, 91 (Garland)
  3. Thanks, man. I will follow up with her, too.
  4. You're awesome. (I just sent a PM to you.)
  5. I don't think he's going to get it -- there or anywhere -- but stranger things have happened, I suppose. Does the fact that he's even asking for this kind of deal suggest that he knows that his arm is ok?
  6. As I've indicated here previously, I'm an historian. I'm also a low-grade documentary film buff. It has dawned on me recently that I might be able to combine these two interests and develop a documentary project. (I have an idea that I think is pretty viable.) The trouble is, I don't really know any filmmakers; the whole world seems pretty alien to me. Any ideas/suggestions on how to approach people?
  7. FWIW, a bunch of sources are reporting that Wolf is close to signing with the Dodgers. I think they'll either take him or Garland. (I know that Garland isn't a world beater, but the guy is not yet 30 and apparently hasn't missed a start in his career. Are teams worried that he's pitched too many innings in the last seven years?)
  8. In a 16-way race, 23% of the vote is pretty impressive.
  9. Reports today that Fogg might be headed to the Rockies in a minor league deal. The possibilities are diminishing by the day, it seems like....
  10. I did my part. (And I didn't like the looks of Todd and Mandy, anyway.)
  11. If Kim and Armas are possibilities, I am suiting up and heading down to Maryvale next month.
  12. I would say, too, that many folks assumed that if CC and Sheets left, they would be replaced (to the extent that they could be replaced) by the signing of a competent FA starter. With that looking less and less likely, the return of Sheets -- imperfect though he may be -- looks better and better. (Of course, it's not going to happen.)
  13. Yeah, with Redd done, I think you try to clean house, to the extent that it's possible.
  14. From Richard Durrett's Dallas Morning News blog today (Sat. 1/24): "A few things about Ben Sheets, who was in town Wednesday for a dinner with the Rangers that included owner Tom Hicks. Sheets then came out to Rangers Ballpark in Arlington and had a long toss session with pitching coach Mike Maddux. There's no doubt the Rangers have interest. And it certainly appears they'll jump in the pool with an offer some time soon."
  15. If (as Mark A. has indicated) there isn't any money for a bona fide FA pitcher, then I think you have to look at one or more of these guys. James intrigues me the most; Benson, not so much. (I doubt he's got much left in the tank.) Sign him cheaply, send him down to Nashville, and see what he's got. (Very good thread, but it bothers me that we've been reduced to thinking about the possibility of these retreads!)
  16. Right, exactly. It's not just about the rotation itself but also the bullpen. When you have Suppan and McClung going 5 2/3 innings on consecutive nights, the bullpen is going to get worn down in a hurry. And that's going to impact their ability to finish off games for Yo, Manny, and Bush. The apparent complacency about the rotation really surprises me. There's just no way that those five guys are going to make a combined 162 starts.
  17. Am I remembering this right: Sheets owns a home in Dallas/FW and recently took it off the market? (I sort of vaguely remember reading that someplace.)
  18. Am I the only one who's struggling to picture Sheets rock climbing?
  19. Hey, I'm in the NY Times today about this: http://www.nytimes.com/20...06-hojHq6sEeVhlb7JG60Quig
  20. I can't believe Mulder is the answer. The guy has pitched 13 innings in the last two years. I guess it's possible that he's healed and ready to roll, but no way would I count on it. (The phrase "throwing off the mound for scouts" scares the daylights out of me.) Braden Looper or Randy Wolf, I could live with.
  21. Being an equal fan of literature and film, The Road falls into the: "Oh please dear God do not screw this film up" category. That book is still the best book I've read in the last five years or so (The Story of Edgar Sawtelle came close)... I'm feeling this way about Revolutionary Road, which I have yet to see. I read it in like 1990 (?) and have been recommending it to people ever since -- the point where it became a running joke among my friends. Did anyone else like Hamlet 2? I thought it was amazingly funny.
  22. Thanks for pointing this out. It does add some meat to the discussion of Kendall's defensive contributions. For the wiser, stat-minded brains out there: What do you make of Kendall getting 12 win shares for defense? Just looking at the NL rankings, it seems like an aberrant number -- the only other players even close, in terms of defense, also were catchers (Soto and Molina), and they were roughly 25% behind. (They both got about 9.)
  23. I basically believe that, too, but can it really be proven? After all, Gallardo pitched well as a 21-year old in '07 with the dreaded Estrada behind the plate much of the time, IIRC.
