  1. Johnny Wholestaff, as Jim Powell would say.
  2. I'm so ambivalent about Ben. He has contributed a great deal over the years (including this one), and he has pitched a bunch of truly outstanding games. And yet . . .there's just something that nags at me about his performance in critical situations (whether they are extended periods, or particularly important individual games). When the chips are down, he just isn't reliable -- whether it's because of physical or psychological frailty, or some combination of the two, I'm not sure.
  3. I keep wondering how I'm going to feel if the Brewers completely and utterly backdoor their way into the WC because the Mets' implosion turns out to be one game worse. I guess elation over the fact of a postseason berth will prevail over misgivings about the end of the journey there.
  4. Oh, sorry, unclear pronoun -- "they" meaning Cubs. I suppose you're right about arms v. bats, from their perspective. (You gotta believe Marmol is praying for some R & R.) Those games could be really atrocious, if the Brewers give up.
  5. To make matters still worse (if that's possible?), I think the Pirates might be slightly fired up for some payback this week. The Brewers have just owned them all year, and they might delight in adding to our misery. I wonder a little about the Cubs series. Are they just going to completely pack it in?
  6. I was thinking about starting a "How frightened are you about next year?" thread. It could be brutal.
  7. I think we bought into the idea that the Brewers were going to be one of these young, dynamic, low-payroll teams. And there is some degree of truth to that -- witness Braun, Fielder, etc. But when I look at the roster, I'm stunned at the number (and prominence) of well-traveled guys who are clearly on the downward slope of their careers: Gagne, Counsell, Mota, Torres, Kendall, Durham, Suppan, Cameron. I'm not saying these guys can't or don't contribute, or that you can't have any of them on the roster. But it seems as though the balance of the team is a little out of whack, somehow?
  8. Suddenly my decision to watch a DVR'd episode of "Arthur" with my boy doesn't seem like such a bad idea.
  9. Ben, Ben, Ben. How many times are we going to go down this road?
  10. You'd have to think that the person would have previous MLB managing experience, no?
  11. We went 24+ hrs. without a vent after the Yost firing.
  12. I just remember from when I was a kid, joking with my brother about Garth and Dane Iorg. The names sounded really fierce. Alas, as players, they were pretty meek.
  13. IIRC, he said he's never pitched on short rest. So I'm not sure if doing it 3 times in two weeks would really work out so well.
  14. I have advocated for him a million times here. Great track record pretty much everywhere he managed. I think the big drawback would be the perception that he's too old and perhaps out of touch with the game after sitting on the sidelines (more or less) for awhile.
  15. You know, I had forgotten about Yount's visit yesterday. On FSN they mentioned that he was in Philly at a card show or something. But now you have to wonder....
  16. Please, please, please let there be a televised press conference.....
  17. Good decision, bad timing -- unless, of course, the players really revile Ned and will suddenly feel liberated and happy.
  18. Can anyone think of a parallel in MLB history -- firing this late with team tied for playoff bid? I really can't.
  19. I am shocked, frankly. Simmons as interim?
  20. Per TH: Brewers manager Ned Yost paid with his job for the team's September collapse today when he was fired with 12 games remaining in the season. The Brewers have lost 11 of 14 games this month to go from 5 1/2 games ahead in the NL wild card race to tied with Philadelphia. The Brewers were swept over the weekend in four games by the Phillies, getting outscored 26-10. There will be more to come.
  21. I would feel better if the Phillies had a tougher schedule over the last 12 games.
  22. Merits aside (and I think there is considerable merit in the idea of canning him), there will a PR issue in play here with Ned. I am not sure Mark A. and Doug would want to alienate their fan base by keeping someone who is so liked so little by the general public. And after a collapse, you need a little catharsis -- which often involves firing the skipper, whether justifiably or not. That's just the way the business works. In this particular case, I think it wouldn't simply be for show, given how lost Ned apparently is.
