  1. I hope he hangs out with Jim Skaalen a lot over the break. They should maybe lock themselves into Miller Park and spend 4 days looking at video and taking BP.
  2. If not called up, they're at least trade bait. I wonder if Parra could get us a spark for the stretch run... I wouldn't part with either one for half a season of a marginally better LF (or whatever). Doesn't seem worth it, over the long haul.
  3. Even just listening to the game on the radio, it seemed pretty obvious that Cappy was gassed. Given the upcoming break, I think Ned should have gotten someone up in the bullpen as soon as he walked Jimenez. As it happened, though, it wasn't until a batter or two after the HR (as I understand it) that someone started getting loose, and by then it was too late. I think Powell was calling that inning (if memory serves), and he seemed baffled by the lack of activity. With four off days coming up, there was no excuse for not having a short leash and bullpen-ing the Nats into submission.
  4. Yep, I'm pretty sure. Walk, ned meeting, homer, walk, single, Wise throws first warmup toss. Wise also was done throwing one batter later and Yost granted Cappy a shot at yet another batter. I don't get it, either. You don't have another game until Friday, for crying out loud. Someone should have been gassed up and ready to go. And is it me, or has the mound visit been the kiss of death lately?
  5. Sorry, but I can't say "Tiger Wang" with a straight face.
  6. I am not a huge Yost fan, and I don't want to reflexively blame him for the slow hook with Cappy. But the disaster seemed foreordained after he walked Jimenez. (I was thinking, "Come on, Grady Little, get out there . . .") Anyway . . . come on All-Star break . . .god knows that we need it. . . .
  7. If you look at his whole season, he really has had only one good stretch -- from April 7 to 19. He really hasn't done much since. At the rate he's going, he's going to be sub-Mendoza by about week after the AS break.
  8. Miller now has 13 hits in his last 6 games. Weeks has 12 hits in his last 22 games. Yuck.
  9. Is Rickie really going to flirt with the Mendoza line? He's probably praying for the AS break to get here.
  10. Someone else pointed out that Nix is 26, so this could also be the one shot we give him. If he fails, he's probably out of the league and we can stop fooling ourselves that he may still turn into something. Yeah, exactly. If he's not going to surpass Mench, Gross, or TGJ, then it's probably time to try to unload him.
  11. i think they should bring up lance nix I was kind of hoping that they would have, too, if only to figure out if he's a legit MLB player or more of a AAAA type. But I suppose that they felt more comfortable with TGJ. Probably not much of a difference either way (although TGJ's power numbers at Nashville have been embarrassing).
  12. I think they have the depth to weather this one. I have to agree. Granted, there will be a drop-off offensively if you run Gwynn out there for a couple of weeks, but the OF is a place where the Brewers have an abundance of serviceable bodies. I would almost be willing to give Nix a shot, if only out of curiosity. His AVG and OBP numbers at Nashville are almost identical to Gwynn's, and he's slugging almost .200 higher . This might be the time to fish or cut bait with him, so to speak. (And apparently he's solid defensively.) I like TGJ, but the guy has exactly one extra-base hit of any kind (a triple, as it turns out) in 60-plus AB's at AAA this year. By way of contrast, Yo had four extra-base knocks (three doubles and a HR) in 24 AB's.
  13. If I had to guess on a scenario, it would be: -- Hall to 15 day DL -- Gwynn up from Nashville -- outfield carousel with only Hart really playing every day
  14. I hope the stretching/loosening doesn't cause any problems, if they eventually get going.
  15. It seems like every stadium other than Miller Park is a house of horrors for the Brewers. No kidding. The Brewers (at 18-23) are actually worse than the Royals (18-22) on the road. I suppose the good news is that the Cubs are the only .500+ road team in the NL Central.
  16. I completely understand the frustration, but I don't know that a sojourn in the PCL is going to make his wrist feel any better. I think he just needs to grind it out over the second half, put up some halfway respectable numbers, and then get his act together for 2008. (This is not by any means an ideal scenario, but I think it's about the best we can hope for.)
  17. I'm trying to imagine how I would explain to my wife I that I had caught at milestone HR ball worth (potentially) hundreds of thousands of dollars but, in a defiant moment, had thrown it back onto the field. Just guessing that it wouldn't play out so well . . .
  18. I often wonder if the Brewer's recent success are causing Brewer fans to raise their expectations beyond what might be considered reasonable to some (OK, at least myself). I'm not sure it's high expectations, necessarily. I simply don't have much of a road map, in terms of how well I think the team should perform. It used to be so easy -- you could just rely on the Brewers to be mediocre, or worse. But now we're transitioning into a phase (a long one, I hope) where we seem to be expecting more. But how much more? Good-but-not-great baseball? And what does that mean when they're playing lousy teams?
  19. The interim guy will be their fourth manager since they moved into the new ballpark in 2003. That's your basic revolving door.
  20. I am sort of vaguely reminded of when Dick Bennett walked on out the Badger hoops team. I mean, it's a tough decision, and you have to take at face value and respect the explanation offered. And yet . . . part of me thinks that it's irresponsible to "lose passion for the game" midway through a season. A lot of people are relying on you, and maybe you just have to suck it up for awhile. (And we all know that Bennett eventually regained his passion and took the job at Washington State. I would not be surprised to see Hargrove do something similar.)
  21. Very, very convenient that Bonds made up all of those votes at the end like that, thereby saving LaRussa a tough call. It's weird to me that he passed Soriano when the latter was really blistering (at least as I remember it) in June and hails from one of the largest markets in the country. But, who knows? Maybe fans decided en masse to give Barry a lifetime achievement award.
  22. I suppose I understand it intellectually, but it doesn't make sense emotionally, somehow.
  23. "Losing passion for the game" is the managerial/coaching equivalent of a politico "wanting to spend more time with his family."
  24. Oh, totally Andy Pettite.
