  1. As the day passed, I kept thinking: "Is the lack of news on Sheets a good thing, or a bad thing?" Turns out that it was a (relatively) good thing.
  2. why are me and dhonks the only two who didnt go to school in wisconsin? seems like this always happens... Well, I started out as a non-Wisc. person, but eventually I got sucked in: BA, Rutgers, 1988 MA, Iowa, 1995 Ph.D., Wisconsin, 2007
  3. I'm not blaming the Bucks, but why didn't they figure this out before the draft?
  4. From today's State Journal: "He [sheets] definitely finds some unique ways to get hurt," manager Ned Yost said. Yeah, that about sums it up.
  5. Who wins the TGJ v. Kendall home run derby?
  6. The very fact that we seem to have the "Is Sheets injury prone?" debate so often itself suggests that maybe he's not the most durable guy around. Is he as brittle as Mark Prior? Of course not. Has he irreparably torqued his shoulder? No. Nonetheless, there's no denying that he has run into a succession of debilitating physical problems over the past couple of years. In the immortal words of Bill Belichick, it is what it is. I don't necessarily blame Ben -- it's not like he wants to keep getting nicked up like this.
  7. I figured it would be a trip to the DL for Benny after what he said yesterday about not being able to grip the ball.
  8. You might have seen some mention of this last week. UW researchers are studying fantasy baseball in an effort to learn more about "competitive fandom": www.news.wisc.edu/13936 At least one Wisconsin lawmaker seems pretty unhappy about it, however. thewheelerreport.com/rele...nassuw.pdf
  9. Gotta love those D-backs v. Bush numbers -- .561 OPS. Let's hope the trend continues.
  10. That Ramirez walk off win is looming so large right now. Not only has us 3.5 up instead of 5.5 up, but it pretty much eliminates us from winning the season series from Chicago (a sweep in our last series is unlikely). Wouldn't it be 4.5, if the Brewers had won that game? While I agree that losing that particular game was brutal, I think it might be a little early (with 2.5 months still remaining) to say that it is "looming" over the whole season.
  11. Nice scoop. For Spurling's sake, I wish the circumstances were different, but not a total surprise to see Manny make the Show.
  12. If they feel they can't trust Weeks to hit a flyball to the outfield or a medium-speed groundball, then maybe they should just send him down or DL him. Yeah, I know what you mean. I was happy that Graffy pinch-hit for him, but the significance sort of made me shake my head. This might sound totally weird, and I don't necessarily believe it, but maybe using Rickie in this way (getting him some non-clutch MLB AB's and hoping that he eventually catches fire) is kind of a rational compromise between sending him down to AAA and playing him full bore? Not a perfect solution, by any stretch, but one that avoids the extremes?
  13. Any thoughts about the pinch-hitting of Graffy last night? Turned out to be a good move, short-term, but what does it say about Weeks that Ned apparently doesn't think he can hit a ball out of the infield in a clutch situation? (Not to second guess Ned, mind you. I breathed a huge sigh of relief when Graffy stepped to the plate.)
  14. Is there a "Is Sheets injury prone?" thread yet?
  15. Why would he be pulling his finger if it was a blister? Why the obvious pain? Yeah, that's my thought. I don't know that you try to manipulate the finger with a blister. It's just sort of there.
  16. Associated Press is reporting: "Sheets was pulling on the top of the middle finger of his right hand, but there was no immediate word about the injury."
  17. They are obvious a good team, BUT we all know something will happen to them to make us all laugh, which will ruin their season. Trust me, the Cubs will not win the division and if they do, they will not advance farther than us in the playoffs. I imagine that Yankee (or Twin) fans were posting similar things about the Bosox (or Chisox) a couple of years ago.
  18. For what it's worth in terms of judging Rickie's progress, here is Baseball-Reference.com's comparison for "similar batters through age 23": 1. Jeff Blauser (983) 2. Shawon Dunston (977) 3. Don Money (973) 4. Ted Lepcio (972) 5. Ray Mack (972) 6. Johnny Berardino (970) 7. Barry Larkin (970) 8. Craig Biggio (969) 9. Bobby Grich (968) 10. Ron Gant (967) Not exactly apples-to-apples, obviously, but there are some quality players in there. (killed accidentally posted emoticon --1992casey)
  19. no thanks. Brian Roberts << Rickie Weeks Not necessarily disagreeing with you, but what your argument here? Higher eventual ceiling?
  20. Now that play is resuming, I'm wondering how long the leash will be on Rickie. I basically agree that he should play and try to work it out on the MLB level, but two more bad series are going to leave him flirting with the .200 mark for BA.
  21. I'm not going to say that the parallel is exact, but this reminds me a little bit of the Billy Hall quandary from years past. It's like Villy is this year's pitcher version of a "super sub."
  22. If LaRussa was indeed saving a player for extra innings, I like that he chose his own guy (and someone who probably will get a zillion more All-Star AB's in his career anyway). But he probably should have given Pujols a heads-up at some point. (Apparently, he didn't.) I hadn't realized that Pujols hasn't homered since June 14. Maybe that was in the back on LaRussa's mind, too.
  23. As the seasons continues, I would expect increased intensity and frustration in the vent thread. If the Brewers make it to the World Series, maybe we could see a 140-150 page vent thread? That's my reasoning, too, for picking 150. Either a playoff run or a second-half collapse is going to produce some emotional outpourings (at least from me).
  24. What's the over/under for the number of pages in the vent thread for the season? Should we simply the halfway number, or expect more venting in the second half?
