  1. What's with the JS and (purported) voter fraud? Biskupic ran out of steam on that front, so they're going to turn to Bud?
  2. You guys jinxed us with those Hart/Caballo comparisons!
  3. What is wrong with starting the entire lineup for a change? No kidding. I feel as though we never really see the full Varsity lineup. (I suppose guys have to rest, though.)
  4. So what's the alternative to Turnbow, though? Is it Villanueva, or Reliever X who can be pried loose from some also-ran team for Kevin Mench and a bag of balls? (I mean that as an honest question, not as "There is no alternative.")
  5. However, he is in the lower tier, and thats the only spot on the team you could say that about. It should be rectified, as it doesn't cost a ton to fix, and the solution could also give us an option to close next year, something we don't have now. No argument there.
  6. Turnbow is 23rd coming into today in reliver's expected wins added, just behind Francisco Rodriquez and ahead of Joe Nathan.[/] So . . . he's in the bottom third of set-up guys? I hadn't thought he was quite that bad, but .
  7. What he suffers in is when he's compared to other set-up men who have ERAs half of what his is. I totally agree that he's not in the same league as Linebrink, etc. But I also don't think he's the worst the league, either (as was suggested earlier). I mean, Cappy's ERA is twice what Jake Peavy's is, but I don't think he should be removed from the rotation.
  8. 7 starting pitchers.................check All the more impressive when you look at some of the other "rotations" out there.
  9. Theres not a team in baseball with a worse set-up guy than T-Bow. His meltdowns frustrate me as well, and he didn't get the job done today -- period. However, in his defense, in his previous 8 IP, he had given up zero runs, one hit, and two 2 BB's. I don't think he's horrible, but he suffers in comparison to CoCo and Villanueva.
  10. Not exactly a managerial clinic today, but no amount of managing is going to overcome lack of execution (a la the bullpen). When I saw the JV lineup for today, I almost got the sense that Ned was thinking, "Ah, well, if we lose, we still took two out of three, and nobody is going to complain about that." I know you have to give guys days off, etc., and let the so-so guys in the bullpen get some work, but it's really too bad not to mop up a sweep against a pretty bad team.
  11. Nice hook, Nedly. One batter too late, though.
  12. Oh, that's not bad. I suppose Miller was a given.
  13. Given that it's a day-game-after-a-night-game scenario, I am afraid that we will see some kind of bizarro lineup from Ned.
  14. yeah, maybe, except that Pujols has the 6th highest OPS+ in the NL this year and is a Gold Glover. Prince is 3rd in OPS+ and not a Gold Glover. Pujols is having an excellent season and has the track record to suggest that this isn't a fluke, whereas Prince doesn't yet (though I don't think any of us think this is a fluke). Again, if Nomar was beating Prince, I would be on the side that says people are voting for "name" only. That's not the case with Pujols at all though. I see your point -- it's not as though Pujols is having one of those clinker first halves and would be a total embarrassment as a starter. But I think you're giving his voters a little too much credit for sophisticated statistical analysis here. I doubt that 876,849 people looked at his OPS+ and factored in his fielding before voting for him. Many people, I'm sure, probably just voted for him by force of habit (which is somewhat understandable, given how awesome he's been over the start of his career).
  15. As a pretty serious pre-Peter Angelos Orioles fan, I dig the avatar, Brian.
  16. Yost is from the Bobby Cox tree and I have never liked him as a manager. Cox always messes around with his lineup, he flirts with different closers in the pen, and sticks with his slumping guys too long. Do we have a "how many different lineups" thread? Baseball Reference indicates that there have been 37 different ones in 64 games. The most common (9 times) is the following: C. Estrada 1B. Fielder 2B. Weeks 3B. Graffanino SS. Hardy LF. Mench CF. Hall RF. Hart Other teams in the NL: Padres (31 lineups/most common 11 times) Diamondbacks (44/4) Cubs (41/4) Mets (27/16) Braves (30/10) Cards (43/5) Dodgers (35/9) So I am not sure what that means, frankly. It also seems interesting that this is the second-most common batting order (5 games): 1. Weeks 2. Hardy 3. Fielder 4. Hall 5. Mench 6. Hart 7. Miller 8. Graffanino
  17. I've never had strong feelings about Yost either way. He seems like a serviceable guy -- neither horrible nor HOF material. I kind of doubt that ditching him in favor of someone else would have a huge impact on the team. However . . . let's say, for the sake of argument, we get to the All-Star break and the team is just kind of treading water, maybe a couple of games under .500 but still in contention in the Central. You could make the argument that making a switch then might lift the team out of the doldrums somehow, in an intangible mojo kind of way. (I don't know why, but sometimes it happens.) Will that happen? No. It would take a total, utter, horrific collapse for Mark A. to make a switch in mid-season.
  18. I am pro-no-no, despite the outcome.
  19. Really important game tonight, obviously. Can't get swept heading into Detroit and Minnesota, especially when it's the worst team in MLB (playing without its best player, no less). That road record has got to get closer to the sunnier side of .500, by the way. I think the Brewers are in the bottom 5 in MLB away from home. There is a 0% chance of Ned being fired if, God forbid, the Rangers sweep. No first-place manager is going to get fired unless he molests or kills someone. I wonder, though -- what if it's mid-July, and the team is under .500, out of first place, yet within 4-5 games of the lead? Do you bring in an elder statesman type to get the youngsters in line?
  20. I hate to mutter the "s"-word, but I would feel a whole lot better if the Brewers won all three of these games. (And there isn't any excuse for them not to, either.)
  21. The shot typified LaPorta's senior season at Florida. It was one in which the slugger invoked fear in opponents. LaPorta walked 55 times this season, including 30 times intentionally. Tennessee coach Rod Delmonico intentionally walked LaPorta seven consecutive times last week. Seven consecutive intentional walks? That's ridiculous. (But good -- he must have really been a terror in the SEC.)
  22. If this is the team's biggest problem over the remainder of the season, I will be soooooooooo happy.
  23. Was the grenade like an homage to "Caddyshack"? It sort of reminded me of Carl.
  24. Yeah, it seems like he was playing specifically for a 3-run HR there? Keeping Hall on the bench seemed odd to me.
