  1. [ I know that is what I said. If he is playing up to his contract we don't want to trade him and if he isn't playing up to his contract we can't trade him. ] You can, but you have to eat some cash.
  2. [ Brian you have become the picture king suddenly. ] I didn't have time to write a thousand words.

  4. [ Weeks should be batting 6th today. Is anyone else getting tired of seeing the word Mench in the lineup? ] I am, but it's better than Jenkins in the lineup vs LHP.
  5. [ You should read Jonathan Kirsch's book "God Against The Gods". Consider Sabermetrics as early 2nd century christianity and all other methods of baseball analysis as pagan religions. ] Sorry David, gotta cry foul here for the religious reference. I understand that the purpose of your post was that Sabermetrics may not be the panacea of baseball analysis, but the book you mentioned would be offensive to those of the Christian faith.

  7. I wouldn't be surprised if they used "rookie ball" as a generic term for the low minors. I would be surprised to see him in Helena.
  8. [ Geno's point, which was never really rebuttled, is how long does a manager ride an underperforming pony? ] Earl Weaver talks about this in Weaver on Strategy. To summarize, the more established the player, the more you ride him out... in the case of the bullpen, the hot hand is what matters. You can't manage by stats alone, but I don't think the statheads claim that either.
  9. [ The second picture was from magic the gathering a card called the prodigal sorceror, which for some reason was nicknamed Tim. ] You just got your brewerfan.net nerd pass.
  10. Pettyjohn battling back to The Show Article about a Brewers' farmhand who nearly died after a severe case of ulcerative colitis.
  11. ...buying a keyboard on eBay that doesn't work, then having it pointed out to you that the description in small letters said it wasn't functional
  12. [ Fans will simply never be happy. ] At the beginning of the season, you'll have fans asking why Yost didn't run out his best relievers for every game. If he did overuse the bullpen, at the end of the season, you'll have fans complaining that Yost overused the bullpen. It's kinda like running this site.... You can never please all of the people all of the time http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  13. [ I definitely respect your opinion, but I feel like a 21 year-old pitcher making his first start should be pulled with 94 pitches after six innings of solid work. He's amped up, he's no doubt overthrowing a little bit, and he's had a solid start. What is the marginal benefit of having him go out there for another inning? ] He's pitched well over 94 pitches before, and he was rolling. The team had a 4 run lead. The benefit is that you save the bullpen for another night.
  14. [ Thanks for noticing, Brian. I actually praised Ned's game management yesterday (check the end of the in-game thread if you want), while Yost himself and others criticized it. ] Yeah, I thought someone hacked your account. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif I think the Yost management criticisms are healthy. Assuming they don't turn into flame wars, I think we all learn a lot about baseball from them.
  15. [ You guys who feel the need to find something wrong with everything Yost does, do realize that the other team does get a say in these things don't you? ] In fairness to dougjones43, he's defended Yost at points this year, so I think his concerns are certainly legit and debatable. Debating the points is fine... Telling him he's a Yost hater is an ad hominem attack, and doesn't do much for the argument.
  16. This is an even nerdier reference: http://www.wizards.com/magic/images/cardart/2E/Prodigal_Sorcerer.jpg
  17. [ Although it worked out for us, I think it would have been a much better decision to have Shouse face Roberts, Winn, and Klesko than Villanueva. A hitters splits are as (if not more) important than a pitchers splits when looking at matchups. Like I said, all of those players historically stuggle against lefties, so to me it's a no-brainer that you use your loogy to face them late in a 1-run ballgame. ] I guess I disagree with you that a hitters splits are more important than a changeup pitchers splits. A changeup is a changeup is a changeup.. It's not hooking in on anyone. Villy's fastball has very little movement. When balls aren't moving left and right, the batter isn't seeing it any better.
  18. [ First, part of the reason Mench has to play so deep is because he is a poor defensive player. Second, I'm saying that one of the other guys definitely gets to that ball or not. That's not really the point. There's a bigger picture. Even if there wasn't a ball hit to left-field at all, it's still a stupid mistake to have Mench out there playing defense when there were easily available better alternatives. ] I agree with you.
  19. [ Doesn't make sense to use Villanueva over Shouse. ] Shouse vs. Durham isn't a matchup I wanted to see. and Villy's a changeup guy, making the lefty/right splits not as relevant. Why burn through two pitchers when Villy's numbers have him pitching good against both lefties and righties?

  21. [ Seeing how Jenkins pinch hit in the 8th, and was only two batting spots behind Mench, it sure seems that a double-switch to allow him to play defense in the 9th would have made a lot of sense. ] I don't necessarily disagree with your double-switch idea, but Mench was positioned poorly on the hit in question. I don't think Gross or Jenks gets to that ball.... Mench really isn't as bad of an outfielder as people make him out to be (except for the arm, which is rather weak).
  22. [ 2. Why the heck was Villanueva brought in instead of Shouse? With Durham due to pinch hit, the next 5 batters when Villanueva came in were: Durham, Roberts, Winn, Klesko, and Bonds. All of these players have a history of hitting much worse against LHP than RHP. I''m beginning to wonder if Ned Yost ever even looks at splits. ] Nothing about Durham's stats say that he hits righties better than lefties... 2007 or career-wise. Same with Winn.... and Klesko's actually been better vs. LHP this year. Villanueva's a change-up guy, which makes him rather arm-neutral. I think if we would have got to Bonds, we would have seen Shouse. Ned just about jumped up to go get him from Klesko, and then sat back down.
