  1. [ If you think Rickie Weeks isn't good enough right now to play in light of alternatives, what is your starting left side of the infield? ] ??? Perhaps you misunderstood the point I was trying to make in my post. I was saying that despite rookies quite often having numbers that aren't as good as the alternatives, they need their reps to get over the learning curve. [ How about Hall tonight? He's carrying that big bat up to the plate again tonight! Single! Single! Triple! Single! They cannot get him out tonight! And how about that ranging play in the 9th inning play with his back to the infield to snare that looping line drive/blooper! The guy's a cornerstone player. ] Good for him. He's a fine player, i'm not arguing that. Of course, I don't make my decisions on who's going to be better based on one game or even one season.
  2. [ What's our alternative at 2B right now? ] http://espn.go.com/i/mlb/profiles/players/6992.jpg
  3. [ I don't care if a guy is a rookie or not. This is the MLB. Produce better than an/the alternative or sit! ] That just doesn't make any sense to me, though. You give a rookie exactly one shot to produce, then write him off because he's not cutting it? Alright, just bench Rickie Weeks, then. He's only got a .746 OPS and a bunch of defensive miscues. Might as well trade him for some other guy with less errors and just put up a .760 OPS. Overbay's got a better OPS than Fielder, and is better defensively as well. Off with Prince's head! The reality is, at some point you have to bite the bullet and let a rookie work through their struggles... especially when you're a small market team and need the prospects you've been banking on (quite literally) to be given the chance to succeed at the major league level. Hardy's progression clearly supports this argument... I don't think many here would deny that his rise in offense isn't just some statistical fluke.
  4. [ Do you have anything to add besides citing that I have been questioning Yost's anointing of Hardy as starting SS in spite of batting average, slugging average, defensive range, speed considerations which all point to Hall as the just-earned starter? ] Yeah, he's got an .851 OPS since the all-star break. He was rushed to the majors, and obviously, it showed. It was expected that Hardy would struggle this year, but sometimes, you have to play for the future when you think your prospect is worth it. Yost AND Melvin believe Hardy's going to be the better long-term player. If you just run with the theory that you always bench the rookie in favor of the guy with better numbers, you never give your rookie the time to adjust. In JJ's case, he was given a rotten deal to start the year since he missed most of the AAA season in 2004 due to injury.
  5. You've been on the anti-Yost & Hardy crusade all year, and no you've found something that represents the perfect storm of cherry-picking for you, a quote BY yost ABOUT hardy. For those of you who've seen PCU, I think this quote sums it up perfectly: "Caine and Hackman in the same movie together! This is my thesis, man! This is my closing argument!"
  6. [ Yeah, Brian, but hasn't Bobby Cox been ejected more than anyone in history? Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think he may even have been the only manager to have been run, in a World Series game! ] There's a difference between going off on umpires and going off on your own players, Geno.
  7. [ I had to jump in on this, how do you think Yost is getting the job down, motivational wise? What specifically has he done that we can prove? ] I'd have to say that first and foremost, the team has handled the loss of Ben Sheets remarkably well. Like I said earlier, when I have a team on paper, and I figure that they'll come in a couple of games below .500, I look at how they ended up, and then factor in injuries. The team has been able to stay competitive even after losing their ace. Other than that, there really is no proof, as we have no players coming out and saying what's actually on their minds regarding Ned. So it IS a complete judgement call. Ther's no SABR manager stat or anything http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  8. [ Ned has his drawbacks, but I think he's beginning to grow out of his scary loyalty and favoritism (although Obermueller STILL starts!) and would be much better suited to a pennant race than a profane, embarrassing Royster clone like Good Ol' Ozzeroo... ] Like I said earlier in the thread, you have to look at who trained him. He said next to one of the most effective stiffs in the game, Bobby Cox. I know a lot of fans want him to lay into his players so the media gets a quote, but I honestly don't think he'll ever do that. He's not an attention whore like Ozzie. When I judge a manager, I usually say, given this talent, where did you expect to be on paper? The + and -, to me, depends on injuries and managing. I've said all along that I expected the Brewers to finish a few games under .500, and that's where they are. I'm not HAPPY with it, but i'm not all that shocked. I do differ in opinion with Yost in some of his strategies, but as far as getting the most out of his talent from a motivation point of view, I think he's doing a very good job.
  9. [ Do you give such flares and warnings to all new members of this forum --- or just to those who have the inclination to criticize Yost and/or Hardy when it is due? ] I certainly give it to those who I feel make it their "posting career" to criticize Yost. There's nothing wrong with criticizing Yost from time to time, I do it, everyone does it. But when that's ALL people do, then I have a problem with it. So, as long as it's not ALL you do, then we don't have a problem. I just don't want any "crusade" posters at Brewerfan.
  10. [ Why is it not a good idea? ] It's a good idea to talk about all things Brewers. It's not a good thing when your posts serve to only bash Yost and Hardy. I'm not saying you're going to do that here, but i'm just throwing up that warning flare early.
  11. [ Yost should be more circumspect with respect to these sort of statistics; he sounds like an emotionally charged responder here --- something I would expect of uninformed observers from a distance. ] He's defending his player. It's a function of being a manager. He's not going to say "well, if you look at his OPS which has trended upward throughout the year and his ceiling, I think his plusses outweight his minuses". Yost's not a guy who trashes his players to the media, in the mold of Bobby Cox. I don't see anything wrong with that.
  12. I removed the All-Star statuses after an argument by some that people were flaunting their All-Star status to equate to some type of credibility as a poster. There will be no class warfare at Brewerfan! http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  13. TreeGo, it's fine that you started the topic, but if all you do over here is rail on the same people you rail on at the JSOnline board, it's not a good idea. Back to the topic, when we've seen JJ range from the left side of the diamond to the middle of the right side of the diamond to snag a grounder and make a snap throw to nail a runner, I have a hard time believing JJ's got the worst range of any starting SS. Don't get me wrong, Hall's the more athletic guy, but to me, the amount of range sacrificed for the dependability of Hardy is well worth it. Defense is one of the rare areas where I trust vision over stats. Defensive stats are just too flaky.
  14. [ Is it possible to do "merged threads", where a mod can merge posts from seperate threads that are on virtually the same topic? This would seem to help clean up clutter. A good example of threads that could be merged is the couple steroids ones currently on the first page of threads. ] Not as it stands now with EZBoard, unfortunately. However, in this dream world where i'm writing my own message board software, would it simply shuffle together the posts into one thread sorted by time posted? [ Also, being able to have a bigger archive would be nice. Don't know how that could be accomplished, though, as I'm not very up on these sorts of things. As long as the new board allows be to write long posts unlike now with the stupid EzBoard problem I'm still having. ] There's no limit to the number of forums we can have, so we can archive everything, as far as I know (as long as someone wants to takes the time to move all the threads).
  15. www.brewerfan.net/ViewArt...icleId=216 Thanks to rluzinski for providing this article.
  16. I can't say enough about one of the most vital features of the site. I know many people have turned into big minor league fans BECAUSE of the link reports. May you enjoy all your newfound time with the family. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  17. [ He certainly does well with positioning fielders, strategy, etc. ] It's actually current bench coach Rich Dauer that does the defensive positioning, etc.
  18. [ Yost definitely fools me when he says .500 is his goal. ] If that's not his goal, what is it?
  19. Is there no AAA world series? Is this really the last link report? http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/frown.gif
  20. [ "Well that game was a big bowl of crap." -Brian ] My sentiments exactly.
  21. sports.espn.go.com/mlb/pl...&year=2005 5.57 ERA at Miller Park (Home while a Brewer) 1.57 ERA at RFK (Home while a Nat) 3.68 ERA away (While a Brewer and a Nat)
  22. I also distinctly remember people saying that Hart's most memorable at-bat was going to be his long foul ball last year. I think we ought to have some kind of "set in stone" prediction system, where people who want to put their reps on the line can do so early and publicly. I mean, I could make a bunch of predictions and then focus on the ones I got right in some kind of chest-pounding thing, but I know that i'm not immune to making BAD predictions. But seriously, maybe we can make some kind of contest out of it to keep it ufn.
  23. [ I agree. That would be a statistical miracle. .808 in back to back seasons? The odds are against it. ] Are you really like this, when you're talking to people face to face? Or is this just some act you do on the internet?
  24. [ Hall should change his name to something cool like Carlos Beltran so people would forgive his numbers from when he was in his early 20's and look to the future to see how good he could be at ages 26-30. ] Did Carlos Beltran run over your dog?
  25. [ that "good little player" ranks 6th in MLB among thirdbasemen in OPS. ] That's correct. That's how Hall's OPS currently ranks this year. It was my contention in my earlier post that I don't think Hall's going to post an .808 OPS next year. It's also true that Branyan has a .850 OPS this year. Further than that, it's true that Hall performs better against lefties and Branyan wails on righties.
