  1. [ why does age and progression seem to apply to every player other than bill hall? ] 2003: .756 OPS 2004: .650 OPS 2005: .808 OPS That's a good question.
  2. [ Bill Hall OPS at .808. Why is everyone in such a tizzy about 3b in '06 again? ] ...because his OPS was .650 the year before. Don't get me wrong, I want Bill Hall to be on the team next year. I just want him hitting against lefties, where he has an .864 OPS. He's a nice little player, with a lot of versatility. I don't think he's as bad as 2004, and I don't think he's as good as 2005. If I had to guess, i'd put him at a .775 OPS next year. As long as Branyan can be healthy, I like the Hall/Branyan platoon with perhaps Hall getting some additional AB's against righties when he's hot.
  3. [ Now I have to be in the minority to voice my opinion? Ok boss. ] Speaking of being in the minority, turn your inbox on. IT'S THE LAW. http://www.sillyjokes.co.uk/images/wacky/props/sheriff-badge.jpg
  4. That's a different book. That one is the book for rules of baseball. I'm looking for a binder that isn't available for re-sale that outlays all of the front office rules for baseball specifically called "The Official Professional baseball rules book"
  5. In my opinion, if you say yes to Santo, you've instantly added a precedent for a TON of players to be in the hall and cheapened. A well above average player and a fixture in Chicago, but not a HOFer.
  6. www.brewerfan.net/ViewArt...icleId=214 splitterfj takes a look into Ron Santo's career and his hall of fame credentials. Discussion of the article is definately encouraged. Vote Here!
  7. I moved a thread analyzing statistics to the stastical analysis forum. I would have done it sooner, but my moderating time has been limited over the past week or so.
  8. You were asked to act like a "church girl" when you came back because of everything that happened previously. You haven't lived up to that end of the deal. Therefore, the steering committee is going to have to determine what to do. This personal vendetta stuff against the statheads and the martyrdom about what you perceive as being "treated unfairly" needs to end one way or the other.
  9. [ Many don't believe in relying on stats to make all of our decisions yet we have a forum that analyses just that. ] These kinds of generalizations irritate me greatly. More importantly, why do you need to be in the center of every controversy on the site? I am EXTREMELY tired of it. You were banned because you couldn't let crap drop, and LO AND BEHOLD, here we are again. You're always on rluzinski like white on rice, and always playing the victim like you're somehow getting the short end of the stick. After what we went through privately, you're LUCKY to be here. So, just freaking deal with it, or go away.
  10. quickly, here's how I would rank importance of stats by position 1) OBP (and to a small extent, SB%) 2) OPS (and to a smaller extent, SB%) 3) OPS 4) SLG 5) OPS 6) OPS 7) OPS http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/glasses.gif SLG I'd like to have the #4 guy be good at getting as many runners in as possible. I'd like the #8 guy to do the same is it's less useful to have a high OBP guy at #8. While it's nice to get the pitcher up and out of the way to make the 3rd out, i'd prefer having that #8 guy pick up the guys the pitcher won't.
  11. [ No, it would create heated arguments. ] I can't think of anything Brewerfan.net needs less of than more bjames/rluz bloodbaths. When those 'heated arguments' are the #1 source of misery for the moderators, we're not going to do something to make that situation _worse_.
  12. [ Are we talking about talent or athleticism? There is a difference. ] If you look back at my message in its entirety, I tried to make it obvious that I was changing the topic because I didn't feel like arguing the difference between minor league stats between two players to the teeth based on age differences and prior baseball experience.
  13. They are nearly 2 years apart, and Scar should have been faster out of the gate. I'm not going to go back and forth any more on such minor details... minor league production isn't as important as talent.
  14. [ But they were both rushed. Neither guys stats warranted promotions besides both of their seasons in High Desert. And they both were promoted after one year at each level no matter if they succeeded or not...obviously by looking at their numbers. ] Age makes a big difference when you're evaluating minor league talent and what level they should be at.
  15. [ You can say the same for the minor league careers of Bill Hall and Steve Scarborough too. Yes...scary. ] Hall was pushed, Scar was not. That's the major difference in my mind between their numbers. The thing about Billy Hall is that I have _faith_ that he can be a good hitter based on the fact that when we see him approach at-bats differently, the results are great. It's not just an issue of him getting hot. Now, if he can learn how to keep that approach consistent over the year, then i'd be a happy Bill Hall 2.0 camper.
  16. [ if you were refering to my post, that wasn't my intent. ] I wasn't referring specifically to anyone's post... just the general stats vs. scouting argument.
  17. The thing that bothers me about this entire argument is when people point to the exceptions and say "See! Stats are totally unreliable". The point of statistical analysis isn't to predict everything with absolute certainty. It's too look at trends and say "what is the most likely thing to happen". If I were to say something like "8 of 10 people who smoke a pack a day or more over the course of X many years are likely to die of lung cancer or a smoking-related disease" people would make the argument that since other 2 people got hit by a bus, statistics on smoking are irrelevant. People use statistics and probability to model scenarios for a reason, not just because they like numbers and arguments. While it's not going to give you guaranteed results, the chances that it will aid in making an informed decision is quite high. It's the blend of scouting and analysis that leads to success... not purely one over another.
  18. [ I think at least 1/3 of a player job at the plate is to entertain the fans. ] Maybe they can sign Ben Grieve under the condition that he learn to juggle while walking to 1st base in the offseason.
  19. Clutch exists, for the reason(s) scoop mentions, but there just aren't that many people with a large enough sample size to show that a large number of players are consistently "clutch".... so while clutch players are all good in theory, I don't think there it comes into play a whole lot when teams are looking at what players to acquire in trades or via free agency. There certainly are things that factor into offense beside OPS, but it seems like in the majority of cases, a players' OPS will be a function of all those little things put together (excluding defense, baserunning, and leadership of course).
  20. whizkid, I think your post hit the nail right on the head.
  21. www.brewerfan.net/ViewArt...icleId=213 splitterfj takes a look into Bert Blyleven's career and his hall of fame credentials. Discussion of the article is definately encouraged. Vote Here!
  22. I've done the same thing with duplicate Magruder and Jenkins threads... no players are exempt.
  23. [ to you Brian, but I don't know about everyone else ] This goes back to my point that people can't rest until they feel like they've convinced other people that they're right. Just because some people still think OPS is king and K's don't matter much, doesn't mean that it has to be re-examined.
  24. [ I wonder if a game thread has ever gotten locked before. The way Branyan discussions have been going lately, I'd say there is a very good possibility of this following suit. ] It's happened before, but i'm not going to pull the trigger on this one because i'm generally a bit more relaxed with them. hint: If you find yourself in an argument with the same group of people on the same topic, the problem isn't with them, it's with you.
  25. [ There will be a lot of discussion about players in the months to come. Why should one be off limits? ] This particular one was off-limits in this case because it led to an argument that has been very recently exhausted.
