  1. Talking over the game this morning with another BFnetter at work, I think the best decision would have been to PH Gwynn for Mench and then try and squeeze Hardy in from 3B. Question is... would they have guarded against the squeeze? And if so, what % of squeezes are successful if the defense is guarding for it?
  2. [ Maybe I'm just on an anti-Ned kick, but I'm more peeved that Mench was allowed to bat in a really big spot against a right-hander. Sure, the Reds could have brought a lefty in to face Gwynn, but Gwynn has been better against lefties this year than Mench has been against righties...small sample size understood. ] Gwynn has been miserable since his recall. I don't blame Yost for batting Mench over Gwynn.
  3. [ Against righties, Kevin Mench has a 23.3% chance of reaching base. I'll take Jenkins' 27.1% chance of getting a hit over Mench's 23.3% chance of doing anything that doesn't involve making an out. ] I would take Mench's 21.8% chance of getting a base hit over Jenkins's 27.1% chance if you told me that they'd have the bases loaded during Mench's at-bat.
  4. [ For the record - I am the one who ripped Jenkins throwing himself in front of a pitch to get hit. And I completely stand by it. I know he had two strikes. But that pitch was ball 2 - and a two and two count would have been ok. ] Vs Righties, Jenkins has a 27.1% chance of getting a base hit. When you compare the 100% chance of getting on base and putting more ducks on the pond for a bigger inning with the 27.1% chance of driving the winning run in, I'll take the 100% chance every time.

  6. [ I just have to say (as I fill up the vent thread) that this is probably the 2nd most pissed I've been after a game this year, the worst being the Ramirez walk off. ] This is one of the only games I truly felt like venting. Part of it is that the Brewers didn't have the courtesy to lose in 9 innings, extending my agony a few more innings.
  7. [ But somehow I do feel that when Hall comes back... Balfour is the odd man out.. ] They've hinted loudly that they're going to stick with the extended pitching staff. He may be the odd man out, but I think it would be for another reliever in Nashville or someone via the trade route.
  8. [ I didn't say he was THE answer, hopefully just part of it. ] Gotcha, I apologize for the misunderstanding.
  9. [ Why are people so amped up about Bill Hall coming back? The guy wasn't hitting all that well before he got hurt...yeah, he was starting to come on, but overall he has been disappointing this season. ] In his last 95 plate appearances he had a .967 OPS.
  10. [ Hopefully Billy Hall will be at least part of the answer..... ] It won't hurt, but I'm pretty sure they'll send down Gwynn, as they need the extra pitchers for this current grueling stretch.
  11. [ Bringing in a pitcher who's ERA is over 16 isn't against the grain, it's stupid. And, to not have somebody warm when he walked the first guy might be even worse. Usually the first game of a roadtrip is pretty important. You need to get off on the right foot. Villy or Parra would have been better, either one. ] The problem with Villy and Parra were that they both pitched yesterday. Neither of them looked sharp yesterday. Complicating things is that Parra really needs to get his work in not tonight, but maybe Wednesday night.... I suppose I might have gone with Spurling, although it pains me to suggest that as well.
  12. [ You mean there isn't one guy on that roster who couldn't put the gear on in an emergency? ] Miller was the last position player... You mean, put a pitcher out there at C?
  13. [ You use your closer in the ninth or tenth inning of a tie game when you're at home, but you don't use him in the 12th inning when you're on the road? Huh? Whatever happened to using your best available pitchers before rolling out the garbage? ] How many managers do what you suggest? I've _never_ seen it.
  14. [ In pennant races when you are on the road, you place the pitcher in that gives you the best chance to win. After you go through those guys, you cross your fingers and pray. ] You're stating this as if it's fact, or a rule of thumb... I really don't think you pitch differently in July then you do in any pre-September instance.
  15. [ Does that make it right, in your opinion? ] I'm more of a "use your closer when you need him" guy, but I'm also not a major league manager. Yost gets torched by the fans when he goes against the grain, and torched when he goes with it. In this case, I'll say he didn't make a mistake, because he does the closer thing by the book.
  16. Yeah, I forgot to vent about Estrada as well. What a joke. No, running out the DP wouldn't have guaranteed the Brewers a run, but bases-loaded with 1 out would have been still a great situation. Someone go buy Johnny a motorized scooter.
  17. [ No wonder this idiot still has a job. There are plenty of people who are more than willing to stick up for his irrational decisions. ] Bruce, it's really by-the-book managing on that one. I don't fault Ned for not blowing through Coco in a non-GF situation.
  18. I cannot believe people wanted to hand Balfour next year's closing job. Doug, go get another bullpen arm. Grant's AAAA.
  19. [ Harang is on. ] With the generous strike zone, everyone's on tonight.
  20. bumped, because of renewed interest in locked thread.
  21. [ Oh wow I feel like an idiot. I forgot that they have not been a team affiliate for awhile. I just couldn't think of anything else. ] That's alright, it's just motivation for you to re-immerse yourself with the Brewers minor league teams.
  22. [ What team is Hall playing for High Desert? ] The High Desert Mavs are no longer a Brewers affiliate, as they moved their advanced A team to Brevard Co a couple of years back. The Brewers have an Arizona Summer League (Rookie) team, based out of Maryvale.
  23. Here's a LINK to a thread I started about a month and a half ago about Wigginton. Feel free to continue the conversation in the current thread, though.
