  1. I think this is really a tough one. On the one hand if those guys are a solid lead off hitter/2B, and a reliable starting pitcher, I would say the Brewers would almost have to be considered the favorites in a bad division. On the other hand, I hold out little hope for Parra this year, and I fear Gallardo will tire late, and the Cubs SP will be too much to overcome. Then again, the Cubs bullpen could also be too much for the Cubs's SP to overcome as well. I think its a tough call, but it sure looks like there is a very large window open if DM can figure out the right move(s).
  2. If they can get it, I think this would be a big big win and series win for the Brewers.
  3. Playing Bill Hall as anything but a late inning replacement is just plain stupid at this point. He has absolutely no place in the Brewers future, and is doing nothing to help them this year...LHP or not. Gamel is here, and he is staying here. He is a big part of the Brewers future plans. There is no reason not to get him out there at every opportunity. You want to give him a few extra days off to try to limit late season fatigue, fine, but his being anything but the 'everyday' third baseman is nothing short of insanity.
  4. You got me interested enough to at least look up the details of Zito's contract. If there were just a year or two left, that might be intriguing. Unfortunately, that thing goes through 2013. Zito is a Giant for life. That siad, I assume there must be a struggling SP out there that someone would be willing to get rid of if the Brewers are willing to take the short end of the financial stick, becuase obviously Bill Hall's value is negative at this point.
  5. AAA sure seems like a good idea, and I would almost think as much of a mess as he is right now, he might actually welcome it. Then again, I suppose he has to consider the possibility that he goes down there and still can't hit. At which point his career is probably over. Still though, he has his money secured, I would think he would want to do whatever he can to try to improve. If he continues to hit .125, his career is over anyway.
  6. More and more each day, I get the sense Macha and Melvin are not signing from the same sheet of music. Just as I think Macha let Julio implode in his last outing in an attempt to get him out of here, I think sticking Kendall in the lead off spot is his way of putting pressure on Melvin to get a real lead off hitter in here. Something that frankly should have been done very soon after Weeks was lost for the year (this is of course a function of Melvin's expectations for the year. If he doesn't feel they have the pitching to contend, such a move would be foolish.).
  7. Boy, is Bill Hall a mess! He really should never play. Wouldn't a guy in his situation think about asking to go to AAA for a couple weeks?
  8. With 5 innings to go, it seems like it is still within reach, but I'll be pretty surprised if the Brewers get more than a run or two.
  9. That bloop hit by Suppan was pretty much the key play in the game. Rather be lucky than good. Hopefully the offense gets back on track now.
  10. I readily admit this just may be me, but has anyone else noticed, that the umps this year are not automatically calling guys out if the ball beats them if the runner sneaks a hand on the plate/bag. Seems in the past as long as the fielder was there waiting for the runner with the ball, it was an out...purly anectdotally, it seems like the umps are calling those plays according to what actually happens. Am I crazy?
  11. If the DL thing is true, I think we can safely put the Peavy rumors speculation to bed...at least for a while.
  12. I am a little late to this, but is the suggestion here that DM may be somewhat playing one team against another (i.e., SD and SEA/CLE) for a package of Brewer players/prospects? So if SD doesn't accept by a certain point, he moves immediately to plan/team B? Would seem very shrewd on his part of he could do it...certainly would strengthen the Brewers position in trying to not only get the deal done, but done in mid-June.
  13. Or, he might still be providing stability and consistency in the lead off spot, hitting, getting on base, and making life easier for everyone else, thus avoiding some of these slumps. Obviously, no way to know for sure. I honestly do not believe the 1+ rpg difference is mere coincidence.
  14. Question: Would you take Eckstein as part of the deal to play 2B/SS and hit lead off along with Peavy? I am not much of an Eckstein fan, but I think my answer is yes. He had a lousy May, but otherwise his numbers are pretty solid.
  15. That includes Weeks? Wow. Allow me to be a broken record for a minute...We need to acquire a lead off hitter. Ideally one that can play 2B.
  16. Is there somewhere I can find what the production from a particular spot in the order has been, regardless of who's in it - particularly the lead off spot. Obviously having multiple guys slumping is a killer, but I would submit that struggles at the top of the order helps contribute to those slumps somewhat. Its not surprising, especially given where they were, but Counsell's numbers have declined steadily since May 17th, and have been terrible in June (Avg was .324 on 5/17 - .265 since, including .200 in June).
  17. I am concerned. Right now we have a serious hole at lead off, and several holes at the bottom of the order. Those numbers obviously include the time Weeks was here. This may not be completely accurate, as I calculated it very quickly, but prior to May 18th (first game without Weeks) they were scoring over 5 RPG. May 18th and after, they are 3.9 RPG. That is concerning. Braun and Fielder can do a lot of damage, but guys have got to be at least getting on base and coming up with some timely hits around them. I have said since the day it happened that they have to go outside the organization to find a lead off hitter, preferably one that can play 2B.
  18. I actually find that to be a rather intriguing line up. Gonna be interesting to see what they do.
  19. Never said losing Zambrano (for example) would not hurt more. Nor did I say a reliever was as valuable as a starter. Not sure why you are trying to put all of those words in my mouth, unless you are simply trying to make some point I am not attempting to argue. If you watch the Cubs at all, you will realize that Marmol (aka Lou's security blanket) stinking would hurt enough. That's my point, and its really not complicated. If this particular reliever, Carlos Marmol, does not pitch well for the Cubs, that is, as he has the past couple years, the Cubs are done.
  20. Again, completely missing the point...Who said anything about choosing (besides you)? If either one happens, they're done. The reason I brought up Marmol is that it is already happening. He's been pretty lousy this year. If he doesn't turn it around, the rest of it doesn't matter.
  21. Ummm...yes! Have you seen the Cubs' bullpen overall, or the way he is used? From an impact standpoint, it would be the equivalent of Hoffman becoming very ineffective for the Brewers...maybe worse. Forces everyone else to have to do things they probably are not cut out for. When he doesn't pitch well, that team is bad. Of course Zambrano, Dempster are important, but my point is, if Marmol isn't Marmol, none of that matters because the Cubs are already cooked.
  22. If Marmol doesn't pitch as they need him to (which he hasn't done most of this year), none of this matters anyway, and its over for the Cubs, barring a significant trade.
  23. I'm not positive I agree either...that's just what I think is gonna happen. I understand all good things must come to an end, but the guy has just been such a good hitter, I guess I've just gotten used to it.
  24. To this point, that's true (although the ARam injury has a lot to do with it). It is still only June 10th however. I suspect Derrik Lee will finish the year close to his norms, which means he will have a pretty solid rest of the year. Soto and Bradley are seemingly the key guys (in addition to ARam). If they begin to hit, the Cubs likely become close to what people thought they would be. If they don't...they are probably not much to worry about.
  25. I would agree, I don't see too much to be lost by giving Gerut a few starts/more ABs. Strict platoon? Perhaps not, but he seems to have the potential to hit with some regular PT. IMO, Catalanotto probably is better suited/has more value coming off the bench.
