  1. Boy, fingers crossed. If this guy could come back and be effective, that would be huge.
  2. Does batting practice count? Really though, I'm happy for him and I hope it works out.
  3. Seems to me there could and perhaps should be a RF/lead off platoon in the offing here, although, the samples are by no means the same, Gerut actually seems to be a bit better against LHP recently. One could probably actually make the argument that Gert is a better option out there and leading off right now. Corey Hart has really not done much to warrant keeping the every day RF job...funny because there were comments in another thread earlier just this morning about why nobody talks about benching Corey Hart, and the answer was obviously that there were no better alternatives. Not sure that will necessarily be true anymore. Gonna be interesting to watch what happens with this.
  4. Gerut has primarily batted lead off in the past couple years with pretty good success - especially away from Petco. Not jumping to any conclusions about Hart, but I find that very interesting. Anyone know what kind of defensive player he is?
  5. With the Padres potentially giving up officially today (even though they gave up before the season started), I'll venture a wild guess and say its David Eckstein for virtually nothing in return, making Cravid Counstein the Brewers lead off man and everyday 2B (Of course I have no idea what SD has behind him, or if they'd even have anyone to play 2B once he left.)
  6. How do you figure? I suggested Bill Hall is a bad choice to bat second. Xcellence brought up his outstanding numbers vs. LHP in the two hole. I responded to that because in the last three seasons that amounts to about a dozen AB's. If you consider that valid, I guess there is nothing I can say. The other problem is of course that leaves about an equal number of AB's he had against RHP in front of Braun and Fielder in which he has done nothing. I have made no effort to discount what he has done against LHP. If you can find somewhere that I did, have at it. I am simply suggesting there is are far better places in the order for him to do it.
  7. Interesting addition of the "S" in there for the first time in the thread, and that is exactly the point. Twice last night for instance, he came up against a RHP, and twice he struck out. I'm sorry, but I just don't think you want that automatic out sitting in front of your 2 best hitters the last three innings of a game. Is PHing for your number 2 hitter really how you want to use up your bench late in a game, or would you be better served having a better all around hitter up there and have more ability to pick your spots when going to the bench? And your right, that .300 OBP (overall) in the 2 hole since the 2006 season is innacurate. Its closer to .200.
  8. So if there is limited objection to batting BH 2nd against LHP, why not platoon he and Counsell in the lead off spot? May require Hall to play 2nd. Is there any issue with that? Vs. LHP: Hall - 2B or 3B Hardy - SS Braun - LF Prince - 1B Cameron - CF Hart - RF McGehee 2B or 3B/Gamel? - 3B Kendall - C Pitcher vs. RHP Counsell - 2B Hardy - SS Braun - LF Prince - 1B Cameron - CF Gamel - 3B Hart - RF Kendall - C Pitcher
  9. Anyone think the Nats would consider a deal for Christian Guzman? I have no idea if he could/would play 2B, but he's signed through next year, making decent money and would provide a lot of flexibility for next season, create trade opportunities for Hardy, and help bridge the gap to Escobar. Plus, he can lead off. If the Brewers do go outside to address Weeks, that is an absolute must in my eyes.
  10. Bottom line is we probably need a leadoff hitter. Pretty sure you wouldn't see Hall batting 2nd against a LHP or a no handed pitcher, for that matter if we had a proper lead off hitter on this team. We don't at the moment, and Macha is having to do some juggling as a result. The top couple spots could be an issue all year. Kinda like when Hoffman came back. Everyone moved down a spot into a much more appropriate role, and the bullpen was drastically improved.
  11. Not sure putting Prince behind Pitcher, Kendall, and Counsell gets him the most situations to drive in runs. I don't care about a 2 hitter laying down a bunt necessarily, but I do want him to be more of a bat handler. He needs to have that ability with your two best hitters coming up behind him, but more so, he needs to make contact, needs to be able to move a runner, get on base and create opportunities for those 3-4 guys to drive in runs. Sorry, but thst is not Bill Hall. Also, not a huge deal, but do you really want Fielder on the base paths in front of guys like Braun, Hardy and Cameron?
  12. Not suprisingly, Halls numbers in the #2 spot, versus LHP have been outstanding in his career. His best spot career wise is #4, though that isn't a consideration. In the 1000 or so AB's he's had since the 2006 season, he has had what, 25 total AB's in the #2 spot? How many of those came against LHP, maybe 10? Define outstanding. Career numbers don't tell the story where Bill hall is concerned as they are drastically inflated by 2005 and 2006. In the three season since, his OBP is what, .300?
  13. So we should have a prototypical lead off hitter, but after that it is nothing but a function of OBP, AVG, etc.? That simply does not make any sense. If you are putting Counsell 1st because he fits the prototypical lead off role, why would you then shift gears and not put your prototypical 2 hitter 2nd? Followed by your prototypical 3rd hitter. etc.? The situtaions that typically face the individual spots in the lineup need to be considered. To suggest that your spot in the order means nothing is ridiculous. It will often impact the pitches you see, the situations you end up in, and what is being asked of you. If you are a manager and you bat Prince 2nd, good luck keeping your job.
  14. Where was he in the order when he did most of that damage? Using that logic, Prince Fielder should probably be in the lead off spot today.
  15. There's a pretty significant difference between the two (I don't necessarily think Hall should be benched, but I don't want him at the top of the order either)...there does not appear to be a better alternative for RF right now. Not sure the same can be said for 3B.
  16. Hall dominates versus lefthanded pitching, why not take advantage of that by hitting him up in the order?Because of the type of hitter he is. He is a bit of an all or nothing guy. Batting second, his responsibilities are generally going to be to do some sort of situational hitting, potentially with a man on, or get on base in front of Braun and Fielder. When I think of those things, Bill Hall is not near the top of the list. Now, I'm not blaming him, or even Ken Macha at this point, because I'm not sure we have the right guys on the roster right now. It seems as if whomever Macha sticks in the top two spots may be miscast somewhat.
  17. Its only been a few games, but those few games have done nothing to dissuade me from my initial inclination when Weeks went down, that Doug may have to go find a lead off hitter. Not sure we really even had one when Weeks was here, but we have downgraded even further since. I fear it is going to become a real problem as the season wears on. That whole Bill Hall in the two spot in the order is...wow. bad.
  18. He won't, and having him bat 2nd in the order is insanity.
  19. At least you'll die a happy man.
  20. The question, as has been pointed out, is if the pitching can keep it up. While what they have done thus far may not be all about the pitching, its all about the pitching. They are gonna score runs (although I do have concerns about the lead off spot), and with Hoffman out there, I think the bullpen is basically solid, maybe even good. I love Bush and Looper in the middle of the rotation, and Suppan as a 5th starter is not too shabby. He'll eat up some innings and be about .500. So as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, this team's fortunes will rise and fall on the arms of Gallardo and Parra. I said it at the beginning of the season and I'll say it again because its correct, if those two combine for 25-30 wins, the Brewers will be in the playoffs, or at worst be right there in the final weekend.
  21. That stuff's all fine...just have to hope opposing players (pitchers) know better. I suspect they do, but all it takes is one moron to throw at him again, and hit him in the hand, wrist or whatever and the Brewer season is thrown completely off the tracks.
  22. Couldn't disagree more, and this from an avowed ESPN hater. Sounded to me like what he was saying is that the Brewers would be much more easily overcome the loss of Weeks, than the Mets would be able to overcome the loss of Delgado. I still think the Brewers need to address the lead off spot, but I would say Delgado creates a much bigger hole in the line up than Weeks does.
  23. Boy, I don't have mich problem with anything you did, but at this point can recommend you just shut up and stop talking about it? You aren't helping yourself (Me thinks thou doth protest too much).
  24. I'd say Dave Winfield is correct. Probably the equivalent of the Brewers losing Fielder.
