  1. Sigh...If you mean they have trouble with good baseball players, who fall short of superstar talent, and happen to be white, I agree. Every team does.
  2. Not a great view by any means. There are flat screens throughout though. If you are going to really watch the game it was a bad choice. If you are going more to hang out, drink some beer, and eat, you'll have a good time. Get there for bp if you can, and look alive...balls come humming in there pretty good.
  3. I agree with much of the sentiment here. It does appear the brewers have some decent options. Gamel can and will hit. Pretty sure nobody doubts that, and unlike Hall, it seems he will hit both RHP and LHP. Take a chance on his defense and put him out there. If it proves problematic, you can pull him late with leads, or remove him all together if its that bad. That leaves 2B. I am somewhat comfortable with a Counsell/McGeHee platoon, although I do think looking outside for an everyday 2B, who ideally can lead off may ultimately be necessary.
  4. Correct, you do it to make the team better over the course of the season. For the Brewers to get where they want to go this year, they need Parra to produce, or they are going to have to acquire someone who can.
  5. I was thinking the same thing after Macha went out for that little chat in the 4th inning. Probably not the worst idea to give him some time to work on it, think about it...and hopefully come back ready to have a good second half. The only problem as I see it is that this would more or less be the second time in two seasons they would be doing that, after they shut him down last September. At some point I hope this becomes a case of the light going on, and not a case of the bulb actually being burned out. Clearly way too early to make that determination. If we are having the same conversation on June 2nd, 2010, I will be far more concerned.
  6. I think it also speaks to the influence Macha may have over DM, and possibly the reason he kept him in there last night.
  7. I believe having that dominator in the 9th inning also creates a little more urgency on the opposing hitters to try to get a lead prior to so they don't have to face him, etc. i think it makes the entire bullpen's job a bit easier as hitters try to perhaps do a bit too much in the 6th, 7th, 8th inning because they know that guy is lurking. I also agree with the points about using certain guys in key hot spots when you need them. Marmol being the obvious example, and Coffey being the Brewers' version. That said, I think certain guys are better suited for that role vs. the closer role and vice versa.
  8. I think this was probably win-win for Macha. Julio was probably a good enough choice to come in given the overall state of the bullpen last night. He keeps him in and gives him a chance to get out of trouble. If he does that, he demonstrates he was worthy of that opportunity. If he doesn't, yes they probably lose the game (although given the Brewers' O, I don't think Macha is necessarily afraid falling a run or two behind in the 6th inning.). If he struggles as he did, he's gone the next day as we saw. You don't need to look too hard at the way Julio was(n't) used by Macha to conclude that he really had no use for him. I would say Doug Melvin received that message loud and clear last night...thus the DFA today.
  9. McClung was available out of necessity once Julio screwed everything up. Sometimes, a manager can also send a message to the GM, to the effect of, "get this guy out of here and get me someone I can use" by putting them in that situation. Lou Piniella was able to drastically reshape the Cubs roster in his first couple years by doing just that type of thing.
  10. Gonna be interesting to see what Macha does with Hart tonight. I'm sure he'd love to get him back in there after hitting the HR last night, but Harang is tough, and Corey is 1-12 w/6 K's against him in his career. Bill Hall on the other hand has torched him in 44 AB's, so maybe a safe bet that he will be in there. Getting Gerut or Cat in there to get another LH bat might make some sense (even though he is about equally tough on both sides, especially where the Brewers are concerned).
  11. I would assume on the typicall Sunday/holiday the kid-adult ratio goes up by about 50%.
  12. I will assume that emails/complaints worked. I know I sent one, and I'm sure I wasn't the only one. As per ususal with the Attanasio Brewers, the fans speak, and the Brewers respond.
  13. You know that, how? I am all for Rivera getting a few more AB's. Seems logical to me to generally use him with the more vetran guys like Looper and Suppan and stick with Kendall for Gallardo and Parra. Then agian, based on what we have seen and read, maybe it is the more veteran gusy asking to have Kendall catch them.
  14. Different teams, different ball parks, different seasons, another year older, injuries, etc. I guess I have a hard time beleiving you isolate enough data to could come up with anything even close to valid. If you had a situation for instance where Kendall caught half the games, and Rivera caught the other half within the same season, or couple of seasons, then I would say you could potentially get something meaningful from it. Beyond that though, I'm not sure how you could compare what Looper did throwing to Molina as a Cardinal last year, to what he is doing throwing to Kendall as a Brewer this year, for example. I guess the point there being, if a pitcher(s) say that having Kendall catching has helped, I am gonna put a lot more stock in that than anything the numbers might say.
  15. Looper seems to be giving the Brewers exactly what they were hoping for...innings and a chance to win just about every time out....a very solid middle of the rotation guy.
  16. I guess I would be interested to see exactly what those studies show. Frankly, I have hard time believing there are reasonable enough samples out there to ween any sort of meaningful data. I would assume that within a season most pitchers throw to the same guy 75% of the time or more. That may change from season to season, but how reasonable a comparison would that be? I guess I'm satisfied taking the pitcher's word for it.
  17. Who said it doesn't hurt the team? It is just far easier to hide/overcome if your RF isn't hitting .220, and you have a lead off hitter. Certainly, I think it is reasonable to assume that the incremental difference between Kendall and Rivera will be somewhat insignificant, so any way you slice it, we are likely to see bad production out of the catcher spot. Joe Mauer doesn't play in Milwaukee, so it seems to me, the easier way to address it would be to shore up the rest of the lineup. Gonna be a heck of a lot easier to come up with an infielder or outfielder, than a catcher who is good defensively and can hit. That said, I'd like to see Rivera take some of Kendall's AB's. Evidence would seem to suggest that Ken Macha and the Brewer pitching staff probably disagree with me.
  18. Some thoughts from TH Blog found here. I do agree that if we are getting the production needed from the other spots, RF and 2B in particular, Kendall's production or lack thereof becomes somewhat irrelevant. The SFChron article certainly does seem to shed some additional light as to why Kendall plays so much... "Kurt came into a really tough situation," A's second baseman Mark Ellis said. "I don't think he even knew how bad it was. Kendall was such a beloved figure, the pitchers loved him. Kurt was the new kid, and he was thrown into the fire, but I've never seen a player get better each day the way he has." "You could feel it," Suzuki said of the pitchers' reticence toward him. "But I understood. Jason is unbelievable. I didn't take it personally. I just did what I could to try to speed up the process." Suzuki kept his mouth shut and his eyes open, studying everything Kendall did
  19. You guys have 48 hours until you need to be back at the ballpark. Use them wisely.
  20. Boy, why do I get the strong sense this games will end with Brewers having only 2 runs?
  21. If Melvin/Attanasio base decision other than a back up for LF on that basis, then we've already lost. This is a question of expectations - how good you (Doug Melvin) believe this team('s pitching) can be. If they feel they have a team to compete, then addressing 2B/lead off now just makes sense. If they think they have a chance to win this thing, and can make the team better, why not do it? BTW, why does it have to be a stop gap? There isn't exactly a line of players waiting to play 2B for the Brewers. If they found a couple year solution, that would be just fine.
  22. Never said it wasn't - again you read 'mentally weak' into my comments. Everyone cannot be Yovanni Gallardo, but it doesn't make it any less real or any less of a problem for the Brewers here and now. But, to get back to the original question and my initial response, it would appear to be something that can improve over time, therefore making Parra a far more valuable commodity than Escobar.
