  1. Your opinion is based on 33 of 162 games, or more accurately, just a handful of games. Wrong! My opinion is based on a rotation of Sheets, Suppan, Villanueva, Parra, and Bush. It has little or nothing to do with the first 33 games. If you can point out the legit number 2 starter on a playoff team from that list. I'd love to see him. I'm not even sure you can show me the legit number 3 starter on a playoff team on that list. You said "tailspin", which apparently is going to cover the remaining 129 games I did? When did I say that? Here is what I actually said... I immediately declared the season "over" as in I don't see anyway the Brewers make the playoffs. I also turned to my wife and told her my secondary reaction that I thought the Brewers may actually go into a bit of a tail spin for the next couple weeks. Not sure they can play 129 games in a couple weeks. Anything else I said that I didn't actually say that you'd like to point out?
  2. What are you talking about? My post was in direct response/affirmation of another. Far from self-congratulating. Beyond that, the tailspin has happened, and my opinion (as stated in my post) is that their playoff hopes are dead. I believed it at the time, and I believe it now. When I look at that rotation without Gallardo, playoffs is not exactly the first word that comes to mind. If you can find somewhere I said we were going to go 38-91, I will gladly retract everything I said. If you can't, perhaps you should. There is a bit of a gap between not making the playoffs and going 38-91, dontcha think?
  3. This has seemed like a no-brainer to me for over a year now. Its just another example of Ned being stubborn and wanting his ideas to work, even if they never will. Rickie's OBP was 20 points higher than Hart's last year in what I think all would agree was a pretty bad year. Roughly half of Hart's AB's were in the leadoff spot last season where he posted a .341 OBP. If Weeks can manage to get is AVG. to any sort of respectability which he almost undoubtedly will (I think its safe to assume he will not hit .200 all season) , he should easily post a .360-.370+ OBP. There is a reason he is still batting leadoff.
  4. Other than making you feel better, what exactly is that going to accomplish? As for the Cubs last year, they didn't start playing better because Lou threw a hissy fit, they started playing better when he started to play Theriot and Fontenot more because he realized they were better options. Not to mention Soriano started hitting and Zambrano started pitching. Now, if you want to say that came as a result of Lou's tension, then all I can say is that I disagree with you and we will never know. Lou has been on edge and had another inappropriate rant last Thursday. What has that tension done for the Cubs since then?
  5. Knowing that a team is never quite as good as they may look when everything is going right, nor quite as bad as they look when everything is going wrong, on the heels of Gallardo's injury coupled with the tailspin that has followed, are we overracting to the last week in Brewerland? Just a couple numbers from this date last year... Brewers: 24-10 6.5 games in front Cubs: 16-15 6.5 games back Phillies: 15-19 6.5 back Rockies: 14-20 6 back Obviously the trajectory is not good, but there is always the possibility that we have just had a very, very bad week. It was just one short week ago that things were looking awfully good. What has happened since then has been horrible (I am convinced the Sweep Suits found their way onto the flight out of Chicago), and I know Gallardo's injury changes things, but are we putting too much stock in the last week?
  6. Outside of the Astros, and possibly the Cardinals, I'm not sure I see anything wrong with that statement. Then again, it is May 9th.
  7. I don't think there is any doubt about it. In my first post following the news on his injury, my opinion was that their playoff hopes were dead, and an immediate tailspin would ensue. Unfortunatley, both of those points seem to be coming true. I think many are minimizing the impact of that injury, both on and off the field.
  8. I think you left out one, make that two, very important groups...the players themselves. Don't they carry some responsibility here? Also, Doug Melvin and the people responsible for assembling and potentially overrrating some of the talent. Believe me, I'd love it to be as simple as replacing the manager and a couple coaches, but that is a drastic oversimplification. In a situation like the Brewers are in now, it is not only a question of why they may not be firing on all cylinders, but also a question of whether or not they even have all the cylinders. They way things look right now, I'm not sure we aren't a cylinder or two short.
  9. For the better part of the last year, this is where I have been coming down on this thing more and more. It was his undoing in Texas, and its looking as if the same thing may be happeneing here. I am not suggesting anything be done now, but it is getting very difficult to ignore.
  10. I agree it would be rather ridiculous as well, and probably be rather pointless as it usually is as well, aand I don't see much to be gained from it. Then again, I don't necessarily think a whole lot would be gained from firing Ned either.
  11. Just so you all know, a firing of the hitting or pitching coach is probably a lot more likely step that would be taken at this point, then the more drastic move of removing the manager. Those guys are always the first scapegoats to go in an attempt to "shake things up."
  12. That's what we've been told anyway...so where is it? Hard to argue with the rest of you post, and the question is in fact really directed at Doug Melvin, because in retrospect, while having a couple extra number 5 starters laying around definitionaly provides depth, there sure doesn't appear to be a whole lot of quality there. This rotation is a disaster in the wake of Gallardo's injury, and they seem to be doing their best to ensure that the bullpen becomes a disaster in the not too distant future as well.
  13. After a second consecutive pathetic outing by Villanueva, I don't think they have much choice but to try him out. Simply can't have him, Parra, and Bush all out there struggling night after night.
  14. Starting pitching depth my Aunt Fanny! Someone wake me when its over. How long before the apathy thread starts?
  15. I guess I agree with that. However, I am not ready to deem the Brewers bad yet. I do admit it is a possibility though. I have been having doubts about Doug for the last year or so. I'm not quite ready to take the leap yet, but my biggest concern is what appears to be a consistent inability to assemble a playoff claiber pitching staff. It looked like we had it this year, with Sheets and Gallardo at the top, Suppan, Villanueva, and Bush behind them. Beyond that, all off-season aand through ST we heard constantly about all the SP depth. Well, now we need it and Jeff Weavers name is actually coming up. What happened to the depth, and how bad will we be if/when Sheets goes on the DL? I understand Gallardo is a very big loss, and difficulat ir impossible to completely overcome, but the problem is that the other three guys weren't performing very well even before he got hurt. Time will tell, but this year isn't shaping up to be too promising on the pitching front.
  16. Put me in the camp that says it might be worth a shot if for no other reason to be able to send someone out there who might get out of the 5th inning. The post-Gallardo rotation is shaping up to cause major issues for the bullpen (which has some issues to begin with.
  17. To suggest Melvin is keeping Yost around for selfish reasons doesn't really add up to me. If Attanasio made a move on Melvin, he would have a job offer the next day. There is an awful lot of bad baseball teams out there (and its starting to look like there may be one right here in Milwaukee.). That said, I touched on this yesterday...given that this is not 2 or 3 years of Yost we are talking about, but rather his 6th season, shouldn't the anger generated by dissatisfaction with Yost really be directed at Melvin? If Yost is really as bad as so many believe, and have believed for a few years now, Doug Melvin's qualifications as a GM necessarily must be called into question.
  18. Almost exactly what I came here to post. The more I think about our rotation sans Gallardo, the more I think this year could be even more frustrating than last. We went from having a pretty decent rotation to having a number 1 and four 4/5's. If said number 1 makes his typical 21 starts, things could get very ugly. Will it still be legit to question carrying 13 pitchers in that scenario? The way i see it right now, Villanueva really developing may be the only way out.
  19. The more I think about our post-Gallardo rotation, the more I think I may need to rescind my comments above. I suppose I better finish the thought in the Vent thread.
  20. One other quick thing on Ned...Guys like John Scuerhol, Bobby Cox, and Doug Melvin have kept him employed for the better part of 18 years I believe. I'm not sure about you, but I think those guys might have some idea what they're doing. Given that he is in his 6th season, if you have a problem with Ned, isn't your problem really with Doug Melvin?
  21. Based on where I think this team will likely finish, I think it will be legitimate. Yo is a massive blow, and I think some are failing to fully recognize that - either that or those who have decided Yost has to go aren't willing to admit that injuries are a factor. Even with teh injury though, I still expect the Brewers to be in reasonable striking distance into September, and I do believe the drop off from Gallardo to Bush/Weaver/whomever is dramatic enough to account for the difference between making it and not naking it. There is pretty much nothing Ned can do about that. Since when does Doug Melvin seek cover where Ned Yost is concerned? Because he didn't blame Ned for Sheets inability to make it through a season, or the fact that he gave him a roster full of players that couldn't play defense, or a bullpen filled with unreliable pitchers? If Doug wanted cover, you would not have seen the many changes we saw this off-season...new CF and a new catcher, Braun to LF, Hall back to the IF, a whole new bullpen, DM is a guy who does his best to correct mistakes and improve the team, not pretend they don't exist. Nearly everything above were moves to correct or improve on previous moves he made. Far from seeking cover.
  22. I'm not comparing them, and if any of those guys wanted to trade places with Ned, I'd welcome them with open arms. I am simply pointing out the rather meaningless value of record in last 162 games. Those records are far maore a function of the talent (or lack there of) on the teams, injuries, and the performance of individual players, then anything Cox or Leyland did. Same goes for Yost. Raise your hand if you think the Brewers had a appreciably better looking roster than any of the teams above (except SF) over the last 162 games. For every Ryan Braun and Prince Fielder there is a Chipper Jones, Maglio Ordonez, Joe Mauer, Torii Hunter, etc.
  23. Just for comparison sake, in their last 162 games... Jim Leyland is 80-82 Ron Gardenhire is 79-83 Bobby Cox is 81-81 Bruce Bochy is 68-94. Which of those guys is a bad manager? Not sure record in the last 162 games is a great way to judge a manager.
  24. This is a better point. Sutton actually made 7 starts during the season (Brewers won 5). He's probably the reason they were able to overtake Baltimore, but not necessarily a huge impact on the overall W-L.
