  1. Aside from making you and a few other people feel better, what exactly would saying that actually accomplish?
  2. I agree with all of the above, but then it also leads me to ask what makes those same fans who's involvement with the brewers generally comes from a television or computer monitor, qualified to declare in no uncertain terms that Ned Yost should be fired? Perhaps Attanasio knows more about Melvin and/or Yost then the fact that they are guiding the sub-.500 Brewers. As someone pointed out, Attanasio is a smart guy...if he saw an opportunity to improve the team, does anyone think he wouldn't do so immediately?
  3. Agreed. Piniella is a pretty bad compariosn considering the Cubs and Brewers had nearly identical records last year. Zambrano, Lee, Ramirez, Soriano, Lilly, Marmol...stack up pretty good against the likes of Braun, Fielder, Hart, Sheets (sort of), Cordero...yet Piniella is a good manager, and Yost is a bad manager? Sorry, but that just doesn't compute.
  4. This is true, but the good news is, with a 162 game schedule, teams genarally finish where they deserve to finish.
  5. I don't like or dislike it - just the next set of games on the schedule. The NFL (and NBA for that matter) have been doing it for years and nobody says a word - where each NFC division meets up with one AFC division and they rotate the match-ups each season. Not sure why such a big deal is made of it in baseball. I'm assuming a large percentage of the complainers do so simply because it came to be under Selig's leadership.
  6. Sure the Cubs have made quality starters out of Dempster, and Marquis and the Cards are winning games with Pinerio, Wellenmeyer, Lohse, etc, but maybe it has something to do with the coaching these guys are receiving and not just luck. Dempster has had some success as a starter in the past. Not sure who would call Marquis a quality starter. As far as the Cards winning with the guys you mention...Its May 15th. The Cards are 3-6 in Lohse's starts, and in his last three he has given up 8, 7, and 4 ERs. Pinero is doing about what he has always done. Wellemeyer, we'll see. He may be the guy that supports your argument as he seems to be outperforming his career numbers since they made the decision to make him a starter. Then again, maybe it is just the move to starter trhat has made the difference for him (of course the Cardinals staff and front office deserve credit for that), but I'd prefer to look again in a few months.
  7. Which still leaves them behind. That many runs down, you need more than just that HR, so its not really a question of HR vs. double, its more a question of extending the inning where you have men on base/scoring chance, or ending the inning. Would you rather have a run in, with runners at 2nd and 3rd, and Dillon at the plate, or Mitch Stetter coming in to pitch the 9th? Its not like any of them were going to do anything anyway, so the discussion is rather pointless, but Counsell's chances of getting on and extending the inning would seemingly be far better than Hall or Cameron.
  8. So despite the right handed line-up in hitter friendly Fenway Park, what are we thinking...$3 off? $4? $5?
  9. Well if you don't do it, the bullpen certainly will.
  10. I hear ya, but RH's are 7/43 against Broxton this year with 18 K's. Couple that with Hall and Cameron's sub-.200 averages and propensity to stike out, and I'm not sure Counsell isn't actually the better option there.
  11. While I think there is certainly some truth to that, I think the no-trade relates more to something I menationed earlier as a reason I think this is such a great deal for the Brewers, and made me wonder if there was a no-trade. Most agree that this is a steal for the team, and there is very real potential that Ryan will be somewhat underpaid 5, 6, 7 years from now, thus making Braun and his relatively cheap contract with a couple years remaining extremely valuable to the Brewers on the trade market. I'm sure Braun and his agent didn't necessarily want the Brewers to have all the ability to take advantage of that and ship him off wherever they want for a boatload of prospects. The limited no-trade provides him some protection against that, and I would asume was a pretty key concession that the Brewers had to make in exchange for more years, less money, etc. It somewhat takes away one of the huge advantages I thought the Brewers had, but still a great deal.
  12. Well he did get McClung up after the second HR, so are you suggesting thet he should have had someone up sooner, given that Sheets was under 80 pitches and had previously given up nothing, or that he should have brought someone in without warming up?
  13. This deal is a steal. Obviously a lot of money and a risk for the Brewers, but what I really like about it, not knowing exactly how the deal is structured - obviously not just $5-6 million per year, but if you look 5,6,7 years down the line, there is a very good chance that Braun will be viewed as underpaid. That gives the Brewers limitless opportunity. They could choose at that time to tear it up and extend him for another 4-5 years to keep him out of FA again. If they don't want to do that, a cheap Ryan Braun signed for a couple years could draw an unbleievable return on the trade market. The risk/reward on this one is huge.
  14. Probably not at all, because I don't think there was much chance of that happening anyway.
  15. I completely agree. I think having him signed for a few years would definitely be in the Brewers interest. If he plays as expected, they get a great player, and in many ways, having him signed to a fair contract, may actually make him more tradable to an AL team in need of a DH, willing to turn him into 3-4 young pitchers a couple years from now.
  16. Well, if it is effectively an 8-year deal, I would say Mark A., Doug Melvin, and even Bob Quinn should all take a bow. Obviously they assume some risk, but if Braun plays as assumed, it will be an outstanding deal for the Brewers. And while it provides an awful lot of money and protection for Braun, he and his agent should be commended as well for being willing to give up those 2 years. Certainly seems like a win for both sides.
  17. The Journal-Sentinel Online. Well, as of this moment, JS Online is still calling it a seven year extension beyond this year.
  18. Well of course the new contract/extension has to start this year - you can't really have two contracts. Since he already had one for this year, the question is whether it is a 7-year contract or a 7-year extension. The impact on this season from a dollars perspective is rather irrelevant. Its the total and the years that matter.
  19. Better that than to stop hitting because he knows he is set for life no matter what happens. Agreed, and that's my point. Makes me think more and more that contract stuff is contributing to Prince's struggles, and may have contributed to Braun's struggles earlier in the year.
  20. But at what cost? Just because you have the power, doesn't mean its smart to use it. Has already raised its ugly head to some extent with Fielder. This makes that stuff go away where Braun is concerned.
  21. By giving Braun a seven-year extension beyond this year, the Brewers would buy out Braun's first year of free agency. Team owner Mark Attanasio said earlier this year it would make no sense to do long-term deals with any of the club's younger stars without buying out at least a year of free agency. That tells me it runs through 2015. Doesn't sound like any of this came from an official release, so who knows if he has all the details yet.
  22. So is it just coincidence that Braun started hitting the cover off the ball a couple days ago when he no doubt knew this was a done deal? Also, not to drift too far off topic, but is it possible all this contract stuff continue sto hang over Fielder and contribute to his poor play? I am happy to hear this news though. Although we owned him for several year, he is that good, that this was going to have to be dealt with sooner rather than later, before it became a potential issue.
  23. I would be shocked and a bit disappointed, but sheets does start today. New contract? Possible, but I'd think highly unlikely.
  24. In a aggressive move to try to save this season, the Brewers have stepped in and offered Jim Edmonds significantly more money to steal him away from the Cubs. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
