  1. http://www.uncrate.com/men/images/2008/05/alka-seltzer-wake-up-call.jpg Certainy would make some sense to give him a week or two to get himself right because they are going to need him in the second half.
  2. Weeks has a demonstrated ability to get on base, and for him to even approach his career OBP, he would have to get on base at a ridiculous rate (.400 or so). While I don't see that happening, I don't believe he will finish the year with a .320 OBP either. I think he could be in for a pretty decent second half. With no great options in the leadoff spot (Hart is way to valuable in that 5 hole), I think you have to stick with him for quite a while yet and hope for the best.
  3. I would suggest you don't even need to go back that far...look what happened in teh couple weeks following the Gallardo injury. Now, neither example is the same as adding Sabathia, the main point is the same - the positive feelings in that clubhouse have got to be off the charts right now. Whether that translates into wins and losses, obviously remains to be seen, and truth be told, we may never know - they have been winning plenty as it is.
  4. Anyone playing the "And That" drinking game has got to be passed out right now.
  5. Only if the Brewers turn around and trade him to the Yankees, Red Sox, or Cubs.
  6. Perhaps overreaction is the wrong word, but your post makes little sense to me since it assumes no additions or subtractions via free agency, trade or draft over the next several years. There are names currently not associated with the Brewers in any way that will probably account for 25% of the Brewers's lineup 3, 4, 5 years from now. I'm just not sure why you suddenly have guys changing positions just because one A ball prosect has ben traded (maybe).
  7. I just don't understabd posts/overreactions like this. Why does this one trade need to dictate the future at every position? Up until last year, Ryan Braun was the 3B of the future. Mike Cameron certainly wasn't the CF of the future. These things change. Trades happen. FA sign. Etc. Etc. Etc.
  8. I also would like to go on record right now to suggest that Doug Melvin should get right back to work and acquire a Bedard, Maddux, Wolf, etc. since it would seemingly cost very little, and/or add a bullpen arm. I fully expect the Cubs and Phillies to make deals to try to improve, so if you are going to make the Sabathia deal, I think you owe it to yourself to make the next (smaller) one to help ensure you get the desired results.
  9. I'll repeat something I said earlier about LaPorta...If we opted to keep him and pass on Sabathia, what reason is there for anyone to believe that when he is here a couple years from now, hitting the cover off the ball, that the Brewers wouldn't be scrambling to find pitching at that time as well? I suppose then, people would be complaining about having to give up whomever the top prospect is at that time.
  10. Dude, step away from the abacus for 5 minutes and try to actually enjoy the baseball season. Two statistical wins may or may not be a big deal. But, beyond that, stats cannot account for the emotional impact this could have on the team, nor the (negative) emotional impact it could have on the competition (You think Jim Hendry is feeling any additinal pressure right now? I do.) Mark Attanasio and Doug Mevin made their objectives clear to the world today...their goal is not to make the playoffs, their goal is to win the World Series. If they wanted to simply make the playoffs, they could have just gone out and gotten Randy Wolf or Greg Maddux (which I still might recommend BTW). They didn't do that. They went and got the guy everybody wanted. As I have been saying for a while now - this move was more about winning in the playoffs than it was about making the playoffs. Statistics comparing one guy to his replacement suggest 2 additional wins. As you point out, that in and of itself may be significant. I personally would argue that the impact will reach well beyond that (barring injuries as always).
  11. At the moment I still agree the Cubs are better. If a certain large man currently residing in Cleveland joins the Brewers however, I'm not sure that doesn't change things fairly drastically.
  12. I'd like to hang onto all of our prospects as much as the next guy, but I think some of you need to understand what this is about. If the Brewers are seriously looking at this trade, they are not trying to make the playoffs as many of us hoped for at the start of the season, they are trying to win in the playoffs, and win the World Series. Now, I certainly don't want to overpay any more han we have to (and I acknowledge that to make the deal at this point will require the Brewers to overpay somewhat), and there is a limit, but I guess the question is who better helps the Brewers win a WS - CC Sabathia this season, or LaPorta, Escobar, etc. 2-3 years down the road. The Brewers have demonstrated that they have no problem finding guys who can hit. They have not necessarily demonstrated the same level of accumen where pitching is concerned. Does it not seem logical that if you keep all the prospects, that when they are here in a couple years, we will be in the same position looking for pitching? Beyond that, I will simply throw out names like Corey Patterson and Felix Pie - supposed can't miss prospects that the Cubs refused to trade. They never used those opportunities to improve the team, and ended up with two players that couldn't play and ended up virtually untradable. Not saying LaPorta, Escobar, etc. are more Pie and Patterson than Braun or Fielder, but it remains a possibility.
  13. GM's in KC, Toronto, Seattle, SD...scrambling to find Doug Melvin's phone number.
  14. That seems to be what's going on. The Brewers want to add whomever they are going to add, now and not later. They also clearly have their sites set on winning the World Series (I can't believe I just typed that), which is why they are going after the guy. It seems as if DM is giving Cleveland's GM a chance to decide if he wants to let LaPorta walk away, as he knows he has the upper hand in this thing. The market for CC seems to be much weaker than anticipated. DM seems willing to pay a bit of a premium for the extra month, but that extra month is clearly important to them, and they will likely get it where they can. Either way, I fully expect someone not currently on the roster to start for the Brewers some time next week.
  15. This is actually a good point. Whether it is Sabathia or not, I am quite confident there will be a new member of the rotation soon after the break.
  16. I think if you are Melvin, Attanasio, etc. you have to look at any acquisition in terms of not only helping you get there, but helping you win once you do. If you are going to make a move, it shold be for both reasons. I have no doubt that Jim Hendry is confident the Cubs can make the playoffs as currently constructed, However winning in the playoffs? I don't think they have the stuff for that, which is why they appear every bit as interested in adding a pitcher as the Brewers are. When you feel you are capable of making the playoffs, the goal should become to win the World Series. I think a guy like Maddux, Wolf, etc. could probably stabalize the rotation and help the Brewers get to the playoffs, but I'm not sure they do you much good come October. As much as I would like to see them in the playoffs, I'm not sure I'd be willing to give up much of anything to get a guy like that. If you think you can get a guy liek Sabathia that you truly believe makes you legitimate WS contenders (and perhaps preventing someone else from acheiving the same thing in the process), I think you pay what it reasonably costs to do so.
  17. I think the schedule is as big of a reason for the optimism as anything. With 17 of the 27 games at home, there is little to indicate that they would have to do much out of the ordinary to go 17-10. Less than 10 losses would obviously require an extra win or two, but perhaps it is not all that unlikley. I don't necessarily think it will happen, but does 12-5 at home, and 6-4 on the road really sound that out of line?
  18. Well, I am more than satisfied with the 5 wins I and most here wanted, but getting that 6th today sure would be nice. Either way, they did what they had to do, and could potentially better that today. Now onto 10 games at home. Must get 6 wins minimum, but 7 is more like it. Now is the time to gain a little ground (and acquire a SP).
  19. If he makes any player untouchable, I would consider that a major strike against him as a GM (or any GM). Would he prefer not to trade those guys? Of course, but nobody should ever be off limits if the right deal presents itself. The Cubs once referred to both Corey Patterson and Felix Pie as untouchable. How'd that turn out? They could have cleaned up with those guys, but didn't and both basically ended up untradeable. Until your prospects get to the bigs, you don't actually know what you have. Bottom line...they have a real chance at the post-season, and with the right acquisition, they actually have a chance to win in the post-season, and you've gotta do what you gotta do. Doesn't have to be Sabathia, but it should be someone.
  20. I completely disagree. Assuming there has been a change, and I think there is some possible validity to that, you're right that it was caused by Doug Melvin, but not because of anything he said, but because of the things he did. The personnel up and down the pitching staff simply cannot be compared to previous years. Last year and in previous years, the combination of that rotation (especially without Sheets) and that bullpen was frankly unmanageable. Doug Melvin obviously did his best to address that in the off season. This season, the rotation on the whole has performed better and gone deeper in games (sheets is still healthy - knock wood), and the bullpen simply has more guys that can be counted on to get outs, so Yost is not having to go back to the same couple gusy as early or often as in the past. Better players often translates into better managers.
  21. See some of the comments by Yost, Melvin, etc. regarding the decision to bat Kendall 9th (and subsequently move him up to 8th). The stats guys are there (Not sure who exactly)and I would suggest they play a huge role in the Melvin-Yost administration.
  22. If Ned Yost would change his style, process, etc. due the the ramblings of the lunatic fringe (which lets face it, is the subset that makes up the very small percentage of Brewer fans the majority of those of us who hang out here falls into.), he should be fired immediately. I would follow that up immediately by saying I don't think there is any chance that is the case.
  23. The way MLB is pumping this to both Brewer and Cub fans, I wonder if they might not both pass Griffey. In the end I'm not sure Brewer nation has the numbers on this one, but it'd be great to see. I suppose Braun's ability to conduct the well orchestrated national media 'tour' he has been doing the last couple days, that F-bomb cannot really do due to the language barrier could end up being the difference. Then again, I would assume F-bomb is sending plenty of interviews back to Japan as well.
  24. I'll agree with 17-10, plus the acquisition of a top of the rotation SP. All in all a good month - sole posession of the WC and w/in sniffing distance of the Cubs on August 1st.
  25. Yes, that's true, and I do give the Brewer fans a lot of credit, but that's not the issue. In that instance the competition was Benito Santiago, Kenny Lofton, Orlando Cabrera, and Luis Castillo -- SF, PIT, MON, and FLA respectively. Not exactly the same as a Japanese player plaing in the second largest market in the country, with perhaps the largest fan base in the country. I think the Brewer fans should be commended for making it close where Bra is concernedun, because the numbers just don't support the mission.
