  1. Over the last month, Ryan Braun... 101 ABs, 24 Runs, 9 HR, 26 RBI, 6 Stolen Bases, .386 Ave
  2. JJ's not the guy you'd expect to swing wildly at a pitch that far out of the zone...man, I would have liked to get Braun up there with 'em full.
  3. Mr Melvin, the issue is clearly defined. Of all things, it's the starting rotation that seems most likely to knock your team from first place. Surprise!
  4. Prior to the steroid era, only three players - Dave Kingman, Andre Dawson and Darrell Evans - had hit 400 HR and not been elected to the Hall of Fame. 500 was always talked about as the "magic number", but 400 did the trick in almost all cases. Now, we have a long list of players who have topped 400 in recent years, some of whom have no shot at HOF election. 500 HRs is not the safe haven its always been. McGwire is paying a big price with the voters right now, and Palmeiro has probably sealed his own fate. There will be players with 500 HR who are left out of the Hall of Fame in the near future, Sheffield has never endeared himself to the fans or the media anywhere he's played. There will not be a big push for his election. Frequent comments, like these, will stick in the minds of the BBWAA when Gary's name hits their ballots. I think he's anything but a lock, 500 or not.
  5. Clemente: December 31, 1972
  6. I just hung up with the ticket office, they monitor this site, they had already seen this thread...the answer is no. That was a special offer for folks who have purchased online, and must be limited to the folks it was emailed to. The rep I spoke with loves this site, and was very cordial. Thanks for understanding. -Todd
  7. With both Hardy and Hall at the MLB level, and Brewer coming behind him, Escobar is a great choice. You have to give quality to get quality (unless you're dealing with the Reds).
  8. I remember some of that FTJ, but I didn't realize they were all in the same off-season. I remember how high the Angels were on Miley, they really thought he was going to be a star SS for them. There were more in the next few years too, the suicide of Danny Thomas, the murder of Lyman Bostock, and of course Thurman Munson's plane crash, I hadn't thought about it, but MLB had a bad run there for a while.
  9. How many of you remember Frisella? Danny came to the Brewers midway through the 1976 season. Over the second half of the season, he was handed the closer role, finishing with 9 saves, and a 5-2 record. The suits were excited about him, and felt as though they had their closer for the upcoming season. On January 1, 1977, Danny died after crashing his "dune buggy" somewhere near Phoenix. Just an interesting bit of the Brewers' past, if you remember, great, and if you don't...now you know. www.baseball-reference.com/f/friseda01.shtml
  10. Yes Hawing, it was. July 20, 1976. www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/MIL/MIL197607200.shtml
  11. The Brewers need Capuano and Suppan to return from wherever they've been hiding....no time like the present.
  12. Whizkid is right, but don't worry about it Adam, that's my first great baseball memory, I'll discuss that all you want.
  13. I think ben and roy were on team USA together, weren't they? Yes, they were.
  14. There was about a fifteen year old, predictably rusted car in Madison that read "POVERTY" My former mother-in-law used to be "MRS IPI"
  15. Welcome kricket, it's great to have you aboard.
  16. Robin Ventura turns 40 on Saturday. That's his business, but it means I have to do it too. 40? Gosh, I was just 25, like, 15 years ago. You kids, with your fancy stats and graphs, back in my day we respected batting average and runs batted in....(pulls pants higher), you better keep that ball outta my yard, or the next time...it's mine! (notices thermostat reads 78, turns up heat)
  17. Good idea Casey. To draw your own conclusions as the season plays on, hit this link for a quick comparison of the two players. www.baseball-reference.com/compare.cgi?top=/b/braunry02.shtml Just enter Pence's name in the "search" box for the bottom player, then you can see current season stats for both.
  18. This team certainly does not compare to the '82 team, and is much more like either '78 or '87. The '82 team was stocked with veteran stars, and was expected to compete for the World Series from the day Spring Training opened. In both '78 and '87, the team hadn't won for a while (it never had when the '78 season began), there were some solid holdover vets on both teams, but lots of young talent as well. Both of these teams played exciting baseball, but fell short in an era where only two teams in each league reached the playoffs. I expect a win total in the low 90s, and a playoff berth, as would have been the case in both '78 and '87, if the current format had existed at those times.
  19. I hope this is still an active debate fifteen years from now, and I'll take Braun, thank you.
  20. Braun v Pence -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ROY comparison...if Braun stays anywhere near this productive, he'll bypass Pence easily. To this point, Pence has played in 24 additional games, and has 112 more ABs than Braun... Advantage Braun... Stolen Bases +1, Batting Average, +.008, OBP +.024, SLG, +.074 Home Runs are tied at 11 apiece. Advantage Pence... Runs +3, Hits +37, RBI +10 A lot can change between now and October, but Braun has a chance to lead Pence in every category listed by season's end, and he's the one playing on a team in the hunt...not to mention the fact that he's in the 3-hole on a team in the hunt. I think our guy has a clear path, barring injury.
  21. I'll say they win 7 at home, and 4 on the road, 11-7.
  22. This idea has a lot of potential, but Mass is right on, you'd all have to stick with it beyond the initial excitement of highlighting "your guy." If done properly, this would be a lot of fun for those who participate, getting to know a young player, and having an active role in part of this site is well worth it....if you'll stick to it and contribute on a regular basis. If people start leaving their prospect sitting for long stretches, this feature would add nothing to bf.net.
  23. I do think the team will shape up very well next year. Braun won't begin the season in AAA, Gallardo won't begin the season in AAA, Hall won't be learning a new position, Weeks should be in better shape.... "Youneverknow" is the most accurate baseball term ever, NOW is always the time, but I do think the 08 team will be well positioned.
  24. I like Ichiro, but not this much.
