  1. This is a great article, it's from '89, but I just found it. www.astrosdaily.com/history/yount.html
  2. I do remember Sebra, and the incident in Seattle. Yes, he did come with Robinson in the deal with the Reds, Cincy got Braggs and Billy Bates. That was it for Sebra, he had a rep as a headhunter long before he reached Milwaukee, then when he admitted throwing at someone...no one would touch him.
  3. Some folks here love batting average, others prefer OPS. Some would love a leadoff hitter who leads the league in steals, others would take one with no steals, if his OBP was high enough. To these issues I say...so what? If someone states their case using a different metric than you would prefer, it's fine to then state your case using your preferred stats, but does that mean you have to tell the other person they are "wrong?" Why not just state your case, and tell the other person why you feel the way you do. It's quite possible to make one's case without making someone else feel like a fool. Even if you are "right", you'll have a lot more success winning converts if you refrain from talking down to others. Hey, we're all on the same side here, we're rooting for the same team, and hoping for the same outcome...is there any reason to start pushing each other's buttons over which way is the best way to decide why the team isn't winning at the moment? Imagine if you were waiting in a line at an ice cream shop and the people ahead of you said something like this... "I really like vanilla." "Yes, vanilla is clearly the best flavor, but only New York vanilla, regular vanilla was fine in its time, but that was ages ago." "You raging idiot, everyone knows French vanilla is the flavor of choice for anyone with any sense of taste, have you no knowledge at all of the history of ice cream?!" The point is, whether you prefer a dish or a cone....don't forget to enjoy the ice cream. Go Brewers!
  4. BOOOOO! BOOOOO! Do you guys even watch baseball? Ok, I've got it out of my system...actually, a very good list. There are still many players here with a very real shot at the big club, this is so much more fun than the late 90s.
  5. Gwynn and Parra for Otsuka and maybe a minor leaguer I can believe, Rosenthal made it sound as though Gwynn for Otsuka was the deal....that is what I can't believe. The told Parra not to pitch because he might be called up...who's to say that wasn't going to be in a Texas uniform? IF Otsuka is ok, I'd love to see a deal for him, and perhaps Lofton, if Gwynn is headed to TX, I would imagine Lofton can be had, this could be fun.
  6. I don't believe this rumor for one second. First off, I think Melvin would do it anyway, and most importantly, I think Texas would want a young pitcher in the deal...they have no reason to be rid of Otsuka, they can be patient on this one.
  7. It's way too hot, and the Brewers just had a garbage road trip. Is this bugging anyone besides me?
  8. Does anyone know the last time (if ever) the Crew sent 4 AS's to the game? 1983
  9. I know there are a lot more batters with high K totals now than in prior eras, and also more pitchers who reach 3000 Ks - I could see how pitch counts could stay high, with fewer IP.
  10. Black suits and red ties everyone...here we go...channeling Rodney... How bad are the Nationals? You kiddin? The Nationals are bad I tell ya, ooh are they bad...I showed their lineup to Ripley...he couldn't believe it. How bad? The other night their GM climbed to the top of a tall tower, so they sent up a priest to talk to him...he said "On your mark!" It's gettin' bad for the Nationals, you kiddin, things happen to the Nationals that you won't believe....the other night Austin Kearns took a girl back to his apartment, on the elevator she started to cry...he said, "How come, you'll hate yourself in the morning?" She said..."No, I hate myself NOW!" I just moved to DC, I asked the cabdriver where I could go to meet lots of new people...he told me to try playin' first base for the Nationals. What a crowd, what a crowd....you're all right.....ok.....
  11. Pink... it was love at first sight... yeah Pink... when I turn out the light Yeah pink... is like red but not quite And I think everything is going to be alright No matter what we do tonight Any Aerosmith fans around tonight?
  12. I'll provide my own answer later, but this certainly came to mind as I read through this thread, from "Field of Dreams"...
  13. We all know bullpens are used differently, and far more often, than they were in past eras, but do you realize how rare the complete game has become? Through the 1970s, a pitcher with 15 complete games barely raised an eyebrow, as league leaders routinely topped 20, and sporadically reached 30. Through the 80s, league leading totals came down somewhat, typically coming in at 15-20. Do you realize no one has recorded 10 complete games this entire decade? The last time anyone did was Randy Johnson's 12 CGs in 1999. That's rather dramatic, historians will be forced to change the way they define greatness among starting pitchers, complete games and shutouts are becoming relics. Without these measurements, and with 300 wins also becoming less likely for even the best, what do you think the new standards for pitchers will be? Complete game leaders
  14. I doubt the prior regime would have given Sheets his current deal, and Hall may have chosen to leave as soon as he could as well if things hadn't changed the way they have. The financial impact is evident in more subtle ways as well, if you look at what guys like Miller, Mench, Counsell and Graffanino cost, I doubt the Seligs would have spent that money on the bench either.
  15. Whether we should be yet or not, many of us are scoreboard watching now, which makes all weeks big weeks in my book. To me, it's not about a certain number of wins, or any particular series, it's about maintaining the division lead. The Cubs have had an excellent run, and they've gained virtually no ground. They cannot stay this hot all year, each day that passes with them treading water in the division standings is a win for the Brewers.
  16. July 21 looks right to me too Russ.
  17. I love the way the Brewers have been spoiling the Cubs' hottest run of the season....let's see it again.
  18. True, if we face Capellan, I hope we see the same 100 MPH he's been throwing in a Brewers' uniform.
  19. C'mon Soup, June's over, it's time for 7 IP, with a chance for the bats to win it.
  20. If the Brewers play .500 ball the rest of the way, they win 88 games, and the remaining schedule suggests they may do much better than that. Not only is this team a heavy favorite to win the division at this point, they may finish with the best record in the NL. Arizona comes out of the break with SD at home, Brewers and Cubs on the road, Marlins and Braves at home, SD and LA on the road - that's their first 23 games, taking them to August 5. Atlanta has 18 games left combined vs the Mets and Phillies, to go with 2 series with AZ, 4 games with the Brewers and 4 games in Dodger Stadium. In addition to several games remaining with both the Padres and Diamondbacks, the Dodgers still have two series each with the Mets and the Phillies. The long list of games Milwaukee will have vs the Astros, Cards, Pirates and Reds makes the possibilities obvious. Hey out there....the time is NOW, the ride has started! Stop chewing your nails and start dancing on tables! It's "next year!"
  21. Capellan for Gallardo in the pen? I love that trade....oh wait, there's a prospect too? I'd had enough of Jose, I see this as a significant upgrade.
  22. Cordero Fielder Hardy Sheets Braun will have to settle for ROY.
  23. Sunday's game will mark the halfway point of the Brewers' season, let's discuss where the team stands, and look at what's in front of them. At 47-33, 7.5 games up, anyone would agree the Brewers are in good shape, but do you realize just how well they are positioned at this point? Did you know... Counting the Sunday game with the Cubs, the Brewers have 82 games remaining, 61 vs teams currently under .500, and just 21 games left vs teams currently over .500. Within the division, the Brewers have 4 games left with the Cubs, all on the road (could that actually be an advantage in the series this year?) - they have 9 games left with Houston, 10 with Pittsburgh, 10 with St Louis, and 13 left with the Reds...four teams who are currently a combined 135-184. The next time the Brewers play a road game vs a team currently over .500 is August 20. The Brewers have just 7 road games left with teams currently over .500, three in AZ, and four in Atlanta. Following the All-Star break, 16 of the Brewers' first 24 games are home games (they are currently 30-13 at home). The tough spots in the remaining schedule... Eight straight road games left leading up to the break. Eighteen games in seventeen days coming out of the break (eleven of these are home games). Consecutive home series' with the Mets and Phillies to start August. Three in AZ, August 20-22. Three in Wrigley, August 28-30. Four in Atlanta, September 20-23. Four at home with SD, to close the season. In my opinion, the only thing that will keep the Brewers out of the playoffs, would be the Brewers themselves. It's going to take a catasrophic run of injuries, or a complete collapse to keep them out. Given the depth and talent of the roster, I cannot predict a collapse, so I'm hoping for good health, and enjoying the ride. A reason to watch the All-Star game, and honestly care about who wins? Awesome.
  24. Congrats to the Cubs for winning eight of their last ten, having a 7-game winning streak, and ripping the Brewers' hearts out yesterday by never giving up. For your efforts, you have gained ZERO games on the Brewers in the standings, and now have ten less games to do so.
