  1. Ok guys, this debate is a bit different. This one isn't so much about numbers, it's about what's ok and what's not for the super sluggers of the last fifteen years. What do you think? -Todd
  2. Great post plowjockey, it would be nice to just be a fan again. Keep in mind, when those great Braves teams were built, there wasn't even a draft.........hope a scout offers you a deal, and take it. It's a completely different world now. I don't think there's any question baseball should have a salary cap, and should also enforce some minimums to stop the kind of garbage going on in Tampa Bay. The system is still a long way from perfect, but Flood did the right thing. The Reserve Clause was a total sham, just as the Devil Rays pocketing their revenue sharing is now. For the life of me, I can't figure out why the parties involved can't come up with a balanced economic system. There are billions of dollars available to share, PLENTY for the players, the owners, and everyone in between.
  3. I think Flood should be honored, if the Hall of Fame itself won't do it, the MLBPA definitely should. Both Flood and Messersmith should be honored by every player who ever puts on a uniform. It's kind of like when George Mikan died, he was the NBA's first superstar, but died broke because the huge money came long after he was done. He wound up with significant medical bills, and was shut out of the windfall by the NBA players........in a goodwill gesture, Shaq wound up paying for his funeral. Curt's family, and Messersmith deserve a lot more than the players have ever given them, which brings me to a whole different discussion..........Don Fehr is a short-sighted, greedy jerk.
  4. I sure do remember '82.......I turned 15 that July. The Brewers got red hot in June, carried over through July, picked up Don Sutton at the end of August and looked like they'd breeze. Then Rollie Fingers got hurt and Baltimore got hot, went right down to the last day of the season. Incidentally, Mr Ned Yost had a huge home run in Boston late in that season.
  5. Good point rluz, that article would fit. There's a pretty good Carlos Lee thread in the trade proposal forum right now too.
  6. The Blyleven HOF thread isn't here yet.
  7. ClosetBrewer, thank you, I'm glad you liked it. I don't think Flood should be judged on the basis of his stats, or his playing ability here. He was an excellent player, but there's no way I would have done an article on him just on the numbers. I do think Flood should be recognized, players were absolutely abused by owners for decades before he said no. I don't like the economics of the game at this point, and I hope things improve there as much as possible, but I don't hold Curt responsible for what others have done in the years since he sued. Curt did the right thing, and paid a heavy price for it. My vote is yes.
  8. With a positive vote of just 35%, Santo is a definite no among Brewerfans.
  9. I get the point you're making Huntsville, but you can't compare Banks to Santo..........a SS with 500 homers was going in, no matter who he played for. I suppose the same can be said about Billy Williams though, he was a borderline case, from the same team, same era.
  10. The Cubs never won will Santo was there, does anyone think that has hurt his case with the voters?
  11. When I looked over the thirdbasemen in the hall, I was surprised at how few there are. I also noticed several Hall members played significant portions of their career there, but were not able to do it for the long haul...........Molitor, Killebrew, Rose, Tony Perez. That tells me this position is a really tough one, and also made me think the standards here may be a bit high. Santo did a lot of things very well, perhaps as the total package you could take him, there just isn't the one big thing that gets him in. Checking these numbers gave me a newfound appreciation for Eddie Mathews, Mike Schmidt, George Brett and Wade Boggs. Those guys put up fantastic numbers, which look absolutely eye-popping good for the position they played. Comparing Santo to those four does not help his case, I do think he compares well to Brooks Robinson though, which is probably the best way to consider him, since Brooks is the only guy in who played the same position at the same time.
  12. Hi Greg- Of the players I compared Santo to, I think he compares best to Brooks Robinson. To some, it may not appear that way, because Brooks played forever, but on a per season basis, take a look at this.......... S Runs Hits 2B 3B HR RBI SB AVE OPS 13.8 82 163 26 5 25 96 3 .277 .826 Santo 17.8 68 159 26 3 14 75 1 .267 .723 Robinson The one obvious edge Brooks has, is the four extra seasons played, otherwise Santo looks great in the comparison. Third base is a tough one, Robinson is really the only Hall of Famer from Santo's era. I like Santo, I'm just not convinced, so I haven't voted yet............Santo guys, sell me.
  13. Bert has a 93% yes vote at this point, so I emailed Mr Blyleven today to let him know he has our support. His official site is www.bertblyleven.com if you'd like to see it. No idea whether he'll actually respond, but if he does I'll post his response on the site. -Todd
  14. Some of the things that really impress me about Blyleven just aren't going to be there for today's generation of pitchers. The 60 shutouts, the complete games, the huge innings pitched........that's just not in the cards anymore. Someone mentioned Wells, Glavine and Mussina getting consideration when they're done, almost on a different set of criteria. I agree to a point, it won't be fair to judge guys today the same way previous generations were judged........with few exceptions, starting pitchers are not asked to do the same things they once were. Do you agree that a change of this type will be necessary, and at what point? Dennis Eckersley changed the role of the closer in the late 80's, you can't look at John Wetteland the same way you'd look at Rich Gossage. Where is that break for starters, at what point did 7 strong innings pitched replace the complete game?
  15. Through 24 hours, Bert has a vote total of 24 yes, 2 no........outstanding! Keep the opinions and votes coming. Two of you voted no, I'm sure more of you are thinking it.........get in here and tell us why.
  16. My pleasure Reilly. As I said in the article, the biggest issue I have with this is the low vote total Blyleven has gotten. To me, he's a fairly quick yes vote, but last year he got 40% of the vote, nowhere near election. Bert's going to need a real push to get in- it's as though the voters can't do math. When a guy pitches for 20 years, there's no guess work left, it's all there in the results........Bert's got 'em.
  17. A classy story I remember about Bert- When the Marlins were piecing together their spring roster for their first (93) season, they contacted Bert and told him they'd give him a shot to reach 300 wins if he was interested. Knowing the two new teams meant new opportunity for a group of fringe AAA prospects, Bert said "No, I'm not going to go down there and take away a kid's dream of pitching in the majors." He didn't have much left in his arm at that point, odds are he wouldn't have found the 13 wins he needed, but I still thought that was a great move on his part.
  18. For those of you who think Blyleven is an obvious choice to make it in this year........he only got 40% of the vote last year, and finished behind Sutter, Rice, Gossage and Dawson. I have no idea why the writers don't like Bert, but he's got a long way to go to hit 75%.
  19. jwaltz, yes that's a typo, should be CG
  20. I voted yes. I see this is as a clear cut case of the voters being hung up on the number 300. Had Bert won 13 more games, no doubt he's in. Splitting hairs over .64 wins per season is no way to judge a 20 year career. All hail the king of the curveball.........and the hotfoot.
  21. I don't understand the tension, etc. Why would anyone who posts here take themselves so seriously? True, some put a more effort into baseball knowledge than others, and true we don't all agree on everything, but never forget..........we're all here debating baseball trivia. This is for fun, no one here makes their living playing baseball, we're the ones who watch those guys, then debate what they accomplished..........relax a little. As several have said, everyone needs to know when it's time to back off and just let things go as a difference of opinion. Who's to say who is really right or wrong? If you take yourself too seriously, you can come off looking very silly. There was a post in the locked 3B thread which questioned the intelligence of many new posters..........that very thread contained a spelling error. Be careful about talking down to people. Come on, lighten up, you're a baseball fan, and everyone who reads your opinions on this site is pulling for the SAME TEAM. How fun is that?
  22. Wow, xisxisxis says he doesn't want to post here anymore, rluzinski says we need a solution fast, new guys say they aren't respected.......... What's up? I think this is a great site. Those of you who are unhappy right now, please tell me why. What is it that used to be different, or that you wish was different now.
  23. I'm glad you guys like the Hall of Fame threads, they sure are fun to do. One thread that would be interesting, just to show how worked up this group can be, would be the Dana Eveland recalled thread........that thing would not die. Granted, that's not really stats, but I think someone should store it somewhere.
  24. Raines is within striking distance in the poll, but he's not in as of now. Any more comments either way?
  25. Help me out.........what is OXS?
