  1. I like a lot of what he has to say...... sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news?slug=cnnsi-draftmakeover&prov=cnnsi&type=lgns
  2. A childhood friend of mine did get drafted by the Phillies in '87. He turned them down. Two years later, the Phillies, Red Sox, Mariners and Blue Jays all called him the night before the draft to tell him they were going to take him somewhere in the 20s (rounds), but that they wanted his assurance he would sign if they did. He told every one of them he would sign, but that other teams had called too. No one took him. I tried everything I could to get him to show up in Madison or Beloit and ask for a tryout. He wouldn't. His career ended in the Home Talent League. All these years later, I'd still like to smack him for that.
  3. Developing pitching will always be the hardest part of building a team. You have to take pitchers at some point of course, but I say no to high schoolers in round one. I'm sure there are exceptions to every rule, but to me that's as risky as a #1 pick can get.
  4. If you ask me that was a clear case of overthinking. I get it, it's lefty/lefty and the numbers say Howard does a lot worse then.....but there is no way in the world I'd pull Turnbow from that spot. The hits he'd allowed in the inning were nothing grounders that found holes.......wow.
  5. I don't get ESPN News anymore, but I sure wish I did right now. Congrats Brian, and staff!
  6. I've never considered the site elitist. You can post freely here if you're all about stats, new stats, old stats, regular stats, fat free stats........or no stats at all. The only issues I ever have with people who use the site are when someone really rips someone else who clearly has a lower level of baseball knowledge, or must doesn't see things the same way they do. MLB itself has one league with a DH and one without it, who are we to think everyone who loves the Brewers does so for the exact same reasons? From personal experience, I just started talking baseball on here, sharing stories from games I've attended, favorite players, etc. All I was doing was having some fun and enjoying the conversation......now I have articles posted on the site on a regular basis. Brian had never heard my name when I started posting here, neither had any of the moderators, but it was Chris who suggested I submit articles, and Brian had no problem using them because I had something interesting to say. No one here ever told me to stick to a particular list of stats, or ideas, what I say comes from me every time. Anyone out there could follow suit, all you need to do is have an informed opinion and share it, or have the simplest question and ask it....your posts will be welcomed. Is it really that difficult? Instead of saying "that guy rocks"....say, "I think this guy is really good, here's why. What do you think?"
  7. Here you go, MadScientist..... All together now, from the top... Always Look on the Bright Side of Life
  8. The lack of velocity concerns me a lot more than him feeling discomfort. I could see it bothering him some for a while due to scar tissue, etc, but if he can't throw free and easy, that's a much different story.
  9. If I may actually make a comment regarding Jamie..... Jamie shared some of his ideas with us Saturday night at Weirdos. I'm not at liberty to discuss these things right now, he will when the time is right, but I wanted to point out that Jamie has really thrown himself into this, and will no doubt make a great PR guy for the site. Go get 'em Jamie! -Todd
  10. Great work Patrick, that's some outstanding information. When I read through that and realized just how few draft picks really have an impact on the major league team that drafted them, it didn't change my views on who to draft when, but it definitely made me cringe at the signing bonuses that have been given to countless guys who never saw an inning in the bigs.
  11. ESPN.com discusses McGwire, and the steroid issue. sports.espn.go.com/espn/columns/story?columnist=wojciechowski_gene&id=2298560
  12. These are the supposed votes of writers who have written about their choices so far. Things look better for Sutter than for Goose, at least according to this sample. www.baseballthinkfactory.org/files/newsstand/discussion/yesnetwork_pepe4/
  13. MLB.com article on Rice's candidacy mlb.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/news/article.jsp?ymd=20051220&content_id=1284602&vkey=news_mlb&fext=.jsp&c_id=mlb
  14. Thanks davego. Looking at that table, Lee Smith does not move me at all, he's last in the group in three categories, he just does not strike me as great. That table doesn't make Goose look overwhelming either, he's better than only Smith in three stats, and the only one even close to him at the bottom of K/BB was a knuckleballer. If Sutter gets in (he came much closer than Goose did last year) take a look at Fingers, Wilhelm and Sutter in WHIP, batters per inning and ERA, you could start to establish some standards for the position. I didn't bother to seperate out Dennis Eckersley's stats as a reliever, but remembering his terrific control, I'd bet he wouldn't help the cause of Gossage or Smith.
  15. Maybe this will help. I threw out wins and losses, because that's not the point for this group the majority of the time, and I threw out saves because that's become a garbage stat in recent years. How effective were these guys? How about this? K/9 K/BB BF/IP ERA WHIP GF 6.87 2.64 4.08 2.90 1.15 709 Fingers 6.42 2.06 4.06 2.52 1.12 651 Wilhelm 7.47 2.05 4.14 3.01 1.23 681 Gossage 7.43 2.79 4.07 2.83 1.14 512 Sutter 8.73 2.57 4.17 3.03 1.25 802 Lee Smith K/9= Strikeouts per 9 IP, K/BB= strikeouts per walk ratio BF/IP= Batters faced per inning pitched, WHIP= walks+hits per IP, GF= Games Finished Personally, I'd take both Gossage and Sutter into the Hall, if I could only take one, it would be Bruce. The one obvious knock on Sutter is the short career, but these stats show him to be as good as any of these guys if you can get past the MUCH lower number of games. Scoring this very simply, there are six stats there, among five players, giving 5 pts if the player was best in a category, one if he was worst, etc...... Sutter 21 pts, Wilhelm 20 pts, Fingers 19 pts, Smith 16 pts, Gossage 14 pts I'm not saying this should determine anyone's vote, just trying to offer a frame of reference for the position.

  18. www.brewerfan.net/ViewArticle.do?articleId=227 The article is up, what's your take on Gossage?
  19. Hi Reilly- I completely agree, if I could only vote for one player on this year's ballot, it would be Blyleven. Please read my last post in this thread, I had placed that link in the discussion thread for Blyleven, in the statistical analysis forum. Here's a link to the Jim Rice discussion thread, there's a link to the recent ESPN article in my last post in the thread. Bruce Sutter here.
  20. If you haven't seen it, ESPN.com has been running a series of articles promoting various players for Hall of Fame election. I put links to the Rice, Blyleven and Sutter articles in their threads here. Check out the statistical analysis forum to see how their opinions compare to ours around here.
