  1. Take DeMuth seriously as a candidate to play third base in Milwaukee at some point. He was a "senior sign" out of college last year, taken in round five - it would be easy to look at that player and say, "roster filler", but that is not what he is. DeMuth can hit, and he can handle third base, he just isn't, "sexy" for the position, which is to say he's more of a 12 homer per year guy than a 25 homer guy. Think Jeff Cirillo and Kevin Seitzer, if he reaches his ceiling, he's that sort of player. DeMuth is in Appleton right now, if things go well, he moves to High A later this year. I would guess his "best case scenario" is to complete A ball this year, play in AA next year, and be called up around June 1 in 2017. That's best case, but it's not impossible. Dustin is 23 right now, so if he makes it he's a 25 or 26 year old rookie, who probably helps his team more than the average fan ever gives him credit for.
  2. Get concerned, folks, Devin Williams is NOT doing what it takes to reach the big leagues. Williams is in extended spring training, instead of Appleton because of it - his issues are whatever you want to call them, "immaturity", is probably the preferred term. The arm is there if he takes things seriously, the, "forearm strain", that allegedly kept him in extended spring training, in my opinion, is likely a nice story.
  3. Keep an eye on Carlos Leal, catcher, in Appleton this season. The Brewers took him in the 34th round last year, as a pitcher - he bombed. BUT....they brought him back as a catcher, and, straight from the coaching staff up there, "This is a better Martin Maldonado." He's a long ways from anywhere right now, but the organization honestly thinks he may prove to be a big league catcher.
  4. Hi BCD - Those two pitchers, to me, are the wildcards of this draft. One of them was the first pick last year, the other was in the running for the first pick this year, and they're both coming off the same injury, on what should be the same time frame to return. I have no idea where either one of them will actually go, but I believe they will both be picked based on potential rather than the injury, so I just plugged them into two money spots, with Boston and New York. If both were healthy, and in the same draft, I don't know which guy would be picked first, I think that's a great question. Unless Houston wants to gamble with Matuella, which I doubt, I don't see the obvious team with multiple high picks to roll the dice here. I could see either, or both, falling further than I guessed here, and sure, Matuella could go ahead of Aiken. Atlanta might be interesting here, they have the 14th pick, the 28th pick, for Ervin Santana, and now the 41st pick, acquired from San Diego.
  5. I just did a mock draft....pitching rules. I'm sure I'll modify this a time or two before the draft, but for now I sent some hurt pitchers to some big money teams. http://www.baseballintheblood.com/?p=1182
  6. Crew07, I'm with you, the MLB draft process is a mess - period. Why bother having 40 rounds, if you know teams are going to sign around 25 of those picks in the first place? Why not have physicals done prior to the draft? Why not make kids declare for the draft, the same way other sports do - pick your year, and come out. Kids being drafted multiple times shows you there is way to much room in the system - the next time you see a linebacker enroll at USC after being drafted by the Patriots, please let me know.
  7. Just a year ago, Jeff Hoffman, from East Carolina had moved himself into the discussion for the #1 overall pick - there's no way he would have escaped the top five. Sure enough, he needed Tommy John, and still, he was picked 9th overall by Toronto. Aiken will still be a high pick, he may very well be gone before the Brewers pick, in fact, I think he will be, but I"m sure the Brewers would at least consider him if he's still available. Patrick is exactly right, Toronto had multiple early picks last year, so they took the gamble with Hoffman, a team with multiple early picks makes the most sense. Ironically, Houston is the team in that position this year, they have the second and fifth picks, and also the first Competitive Balance pick, but with the bad blood that's been created there, I assume that will not happen. I'll say a big-money team who can afford to be wrong more often will jump on it, perhaps Boston at 7, or the Cubs at 9. Even with the surgery, I just can't believe there are 15 better prospects than Aiken in this draft....roll the dice if he's there, being wrong here is a lot cheaper than being wrong on a 4-year free agent pitcher to plug the hole later.
  8. Moncada signing elsewhere is hardly a surprise, nor is it a huge deal to me. The signing is what it is, I just MLB adjusts to prevent more of this.
  9. Congratulations, Josh. For those of you who don't know, "Agent39", he loves this sort of player. The most obvious case would be Jeremy Jeffress, but Josh sticks by the guys who won't give up on themselves.
  10. Josh, is Herndon your guy?
  11. This next draft for the Brewers is set up just like last year's was - they have their first pick in the middle of round one, then they have a Competitive Balance Pick after round one, then they have their second round pick. They used that setup last year to get three kids into the system who have obvious big league potential. The Brewers pushed Medeiros a bit higher than most thought he would be picked, they let Gatewood fall to them, and they had enough cash around to buy Harrison away from Nebraska football. Without the boost in available cash, I doubt the Brewers could have found a way to get all three of those players signed. Gatewood slipped from early projections, but he's absolutely a prospect, and Harrison slid because he was going to be expensive - the Brewers worked the system very well. There's no way of knowing which kids will, "fall" this time around, or who the expensive guys will be, but there's no reason to think the Brewers won't be in position to duplicate last year's approach.
  12. While it won't surprise me if this kid gets the huge payday people are projecting, I don't believe there will be as many suitors for him at that price as it may appear. Some teams will fold because of the sheer cost - that's one BIG check to write, "baseball money", or not. Beyond that, even some of the teams who won't blink at the cash may back off because signing Moncada, and crushing the international spending limits, would bring penalties that would preclude that team from signing any of the top players in the next crop of international prospects. In short....some teams won't have the cash, and other teams won't want to, if you will, trade an entire draft of international players for one guy. In my opinion, if the Brewers really want him, this does give them a shot. They won't be the favorites, and I don't expect Moncada to sign with Milwaukee, but I think they at least have a chance to get this done, if they like him enough to pull the trigger.
  13. Thanks for the link, Mass. Josh and I talked about Tyler the other day - this is a big season for him. If T. puts up numbers, he has the opportunity to advance - the Mets didn't bring in any right-handed arms over the offseason, which most teams did. For Tyler, the world is black and white - pitch well, and keep advancing, or don't, and go home. A kid that was a "senior sign" out of college doesn't get multiple chances to prove it, they have to put up numbers. Tyler certainly has the arm - I can't wait to see how he does this season.
  14. I talked to Josh a couple of days ago, he's recuperating from fairly major surgery, but he's doing well. He's picked up some more new clients, and he's ready to get another season underway. He and I talked about Jeremy Jeffress, he said, "The reason I stuck with him through all of it, was because he always wanted to be great. He wasn't stupid, he just had a problem, and once the problem was figured out, now you see it. A player has to want to be great, and they have to do the work - Jeremy always had that."
  15. Obviously, the Brewers aren't kidding, or they wouldn't have sent this much brass to watch the young man... The Brewers sent at least six people to watch Moncada in a private workout, including pro scouting director Zack Minasian, amateur scouting director Doug Reynolds and senior director of baseball operations Tom Flanagan...per Adam McCalvy. I'm glad they're involved, but let's be honest - the odds of Milwaukee submitting the top bid can't be good, and if they do, this is a huge gamble. It could pay off, for sure, but this is a 19-year-old, who may cost the team 80 million dollars to sign. It's fun to see the Brewers at the poker table, I love how Mr Attanasio goes for it, but this one would certainly be risky. What a system, and honestly, what a joke - but these are the rules right now. We'll see.
  16. Lucky Devin. 'Everyone' knows there are 'issues'. But they cannot elaborate. Soup...I didn't hear this from, "everyone", I heard it from someone you would respect - and not just once. I "could" elaborate, I just choose not to - which is for the best. When you get to know some scouts, agents, media, etc, you find out minor league baseball is a strange world. You've got kids in their late teens, college grads, Latin kids who are so far from home and trying to assimilate. A few of them have money, most are flat broke, some give up on the dream, others never would, etc. What, "is", is not close to what is packaged and presented. Devin's just a kid who needs to grow up - not shocking, that's why they're called, "kids." He's got a good arm, and the Brewers paid to get him in the system - I hope he has a huge season, and keeps moving. I was just pointing out why he may have made himself a little more "tradeable." Who knows, maybe that's not even the case, I wouldn't know which guys the front office likes best.
  17. I've been told several times that there are concerns about Devin Williams - I'm not going to elaborate. It's mostly maturity stuff, which may work itself out, but it also may have made him available if the Brewers like a deal enough. I'd be surprised if the Brewers actually gave Williams up, but I also don't know how sold they are on Papelbon. We all know, if this regime likes a deal, they make the deal.
  18. Personally, the only reason I would want Shields, is because I think we have a big problem on our hands if one of the SPs gets hurt, or if Nelson isn't ready - I want better depth. With that in mind - forget trading Nelson. I really don't think Milwaukee is going to get Shields, it sounds like too many teams are still in the mix. My guess is that someone else will outbid Milwaukee, if Milwaukee is even in the running. I'll bet on the Padres.
  19. The Brewers' system is set to take a big step up this season, if things go well. There are more "legit" prospects in the system than they've had for a few years now. Some of these guys, who have the potential, need to put up some numbers this year - Medeiros, Gatewood, and Devin Williams, for example, could give the system a big push in these rankings if they have big seasons.
  20. There's no question James Shields would make the Brewers better in 2015, I would bet anyone, anything, that Shields will be better in 2015 than at least one pitcher currently penciled into the rotation. It's beyond 2015 that makes you slow down a bit before jumping in. Giving up the draft pick would stink, but it isn't the end of the world - just something I don't want to have to do. I know this board just boils when the Brewers tinker with draft picks, and I certainly understand why, but if they're going to do it, doing so in a year when they have a "competitive balance pick" after round one, and they just got some nice young talent for Gallardo, is probably the best time to make some of you angry. The deal-stopper for me would be the length of the deal. If Shields gets a 4-year offer, I think Milwaukee should let him sign somewhere else. Shields has been remarkably durable, but any multi-year deal with a pitcher over 30 brings risk - you just never know which inning will be a pitcher's last. I see this just like the deal with Lohse - you don't rush, and you can always say no, but if the two sides get into the same range, it's a deal you can make. I like Jimmy Nelson, and I like Mike Fiers - I don't like not having a fallback option if either fails, or if someone gets hurt - which you know is likely with pitchers. If the Brewers sign Shields, I'll certainly understand why, and if they don't, I'll get that, too.
  21. DocLuna, I just don't like Papelbon's personality - I never have. I have no idea if the guy's a wife-beater or anything like that, I just think he's an unpleasant individual. For example, this is the caption under a picture of Papbelbon, currently at jsonline... Phillies closer Jonathan Papelbon argues with umpire Joe West after Papelbon was ejected from a game last season after making an obscene gesture.
  22. I don't like Papelbon's personality at all, and I wouldn't give up much of a prospect to get him here, but if the money is ok, I can't see this as a bad move. It's all in the details, if Papelbon winds up costing what he's worth at this point, I'm for it.
  23. It makes sense that there's some cash in there, I thought the return was high otherwise. It should be worth the money.
  24. Interesting deal, I see no reason not to like it. An 18 year old pitcher? I didn't expect that.
  25. What can you say? I'm happy for Duke, he got a great deal. Zach has done a great job rehabilitating his career, but I think this contract is ridiculous.
