  1. Craig Counsell is holding the Cubs' offense back, the way he did to the Brewers' attack for so many years, by stressing slugging over getting on base. Remember all those tense, draining 2-1 and 3-1 Brewer victories that required peak performances of pitching and defense? The Cubs have the defense but lack the pitching to overcome a lack of run support. Their aging lineup can't sustain much of anything, and Counsell is even trying to force Nico Hoerner to become more of a pull hitter. Spray charts come in handy against the Cubs because full swings with runners on base typically allow fielders to be in the right position to catch the ball.
  2. To take the pressure off Pratt at the plate, I could foresee the Brewers trading for Isaac Paredes as a third-base patch -- if Bunty Hamilton doesn't raise his profile at the plate to the extent the Brewers would like. Yelich's recent power outage would also support the need for an additional slugger in the lineup.
  3. Pratt's most important relationship will be with Brice Turang, who walked in Pratt's shoes and has evolved into a solid all-star. I'm looking forward to watching how much Pratt leans on Turang and how well they mesh on and off the field.
  4. What do Pratt and Lara have in common? They are defense-first players.
  5. Yup. And give Sal a leash no longer than the time Lockridge has left on the IL to make a tangible contribution.
  6. He doesn't appear comfortable at all. His typical expression is one of concern, and his hard swings ought to tell you that he's trying to make up for all of his shortcomings. I'm not defending him. The Brewers need more from their right fielder, and Bauers deserves to play every day.
  7. Jeremy Pena and Isaac Paredes are both available on an Astros team looking to rebuild. Pena becomes a free agent after '27, so Cooper Pratt could become the main trade bait for both of them.
  8. Hamilton is set up to showcase his ability this week with four games against aging Willy Adames and sketchy Giants pitching and three at spacious Coors Field, where defenders have to cover a lot of ground.
  9. I'm guessing that ABS has been giving Lara and Jett Williams a little help and would do the same when they reach the majors.
  10. Corey Knebel had a pretty good career as a two-pitch reliever. What Megill now has to deal with is an ABS system that puts his knuckle curve under increased scrutiny. He's at his best when he can minimize his workload, and losing a hitter to a walk via challenge punctures Megill's armor.
  11. Jett Williams has played eight flawless games at third base for the Sounds but hasn't shown much at the plate yet. I think it will be status quo through May barring injury.
  12. It's mid-April, so none of us is taking "the problem at third base" very seriously. Third base has been a turnstile for a half-dozen years, so any idea is worth debating. I saw an interview in which Sal said Matt Erickson endorsed him because his "lower half" would allow him to play third base. As for Lara's situation, I think Arnold is keeping him in the minors because he wants to check out the new guys as potential depth pieces.
  13. From our friends at AI: Frelick has been highly receptive to playing third base, embracing the challenge to add versatility to his game. Initiated by Brewers manager Pat Murphy in 2024, the experiment saw Frelick learning the position during spring training, with coaches praising his athleticism, footwork, and dedication to adapting to the new role. Willingness and Attitude: Frelick viewed the transition as an opportunity to grow, stating that versatility is crucial. Murphy described him as having an "it" factor and being fully embraced by the move. Performance in 2024: After training there, the Brewers were comfortable with him at third, with CBSSports.com indicating he was a candidate for regular, not just emergency, time there.
  14. How many dead spots in the lineup would you prefer? Frelick, Ortiz and Renigfo is one more than the Crew had last year. You eliminate one (Renigfo) by trying Sal at third, all the while hoping that he'll regain his mojo at the plate. And you find a place on the major league roster for one of the very few minor league position players (Lara) who deserves one. Plus, you get Perkins' weak bat off the 26-man roster in favor of more playing time for Lockridge, whose defense has surpassed Perkins'.
