  1. Anything is possible. It is possible the Pirates will take the division. I don't have a problem with declaring that at some point it 's like a 12-0 lead in the 9th. I do have a problem with Bill James' formula, mostly because it doesn't factor in head to heads where 1 outcome has the effect of 2 otherwise. I think I saw somewhere that there is at least 1 time when someone satisfied the formula and didn't win: 34 Giants losing to the 34 Cards. I don't think the 95 Angels and 51 Dodgers make it since their high points were with a lot of games left.
  2. I think it's like games you have a 100% chance of winning even though they aren't over yet (like being up 12-0 in the 8th or 9th). No team has ever blown a 12 run lead in the 9th: no team has ever blown a 10.5 game lead with 20 to go, etc. bigredrobbo posted the Bill James clinch formula (games ahead squared divided by 4 is greater than games left) awhile back and the Brewers are ahead of that (27+ v 20) although if they lose today behind it (18 v 19) Anyway I can see why folks are looking around for other magic numbers.
  3. Ueck: "And a lot of the Cardinal players are handing their jerseys to fans along the 1st base line. They won't be needing them much longer."
  4. More ammo for the Wolf starts on the road Greinke starts at home in the playoffs argument.
  5. So we might complain about holes in our lineup but how about having to hope that Corey Patterson can keep the game and your season going? That's just sad.
  6. OK I know I'm pushing it - anybody got a shot of Jim Paciorek's catch in Nieves' no-hitter?
  7. Has Gomez gotten a bunt down yet this year? Isn't that something he ought to be good at?
  8. Agreed but really no reason not to. You have your top 4 relievers all rested.
  9. Awesome! Thanks much hoser!
  10. My favorite player in the early years was The Little General Ron Theobald. Can anybody help with a photo (can't figure out how to post one)?
  11. One reason to let Casey hit is that Yuni is coming up next. But still a walk gets you lot in that situation so greenlighting is dumb.
  12. Anyone else having problems with the free mlb.tv feed? Yes, got the add but then nothing else. I'll try again in the 3d and 4th.
  13. Yeah it's been painful watching him go 5-0 w a 1.65 ERA or whatever.
  14. Don't know. It started out with Ueck but right after Pujols HR it flipped to the TV feed and hasn't gone back. There was some squirrelly stuff for a bit last night too.
  15. Agreed. April 87 was fun but given that this gives us a lock (per BP and coolstandings) on division and it's over a full month this is the best month ever. This is also the latest the Brewers have ever been .600 (tied with 1979).
  16. I'm disappointed there was no 23-5. We're all wimps.
  17. I agree. I was worried seeing him 2 straight days after laboring through 25+ pitches over 15 minutes on Friday. I would have left Greinke in for the last batter in the 8th and then had K-Rod close today. The off day tomorrow is a good good thing.
  18. The 82 Brewers were 94-63 before losing 4 in a row and pulling it out on the last day (and also 92-61 a few days earlier).
  19. OK so I'm wrong again. If they'd lost today they could still close out the Cards by winning all 28 of their remaining games that aren't against the Cardinals. So yesterday's win with the Card loss was the game that stopped them from controlling their destiny. Yesterday is long, long gone . . .
  20. Yes you are all right. I forgot about the head to heads. If they beat the Brewers 6 times that takes away all but one of the games the Brewers can lose. So THIS was the game that prevents the Cards from controlling their own destiny. Milestone!
  21. Long gone. If the Cards win out they still lose if the Brewers go 27-7 or better.
  22. The complacency lines are funny! As long as we don't directly engage him I think the troll will starve.
  23. Well Roenicke learned. He should have ordered the walk to get Kershaw out of the game on Thursday as well. Actually that was even a clearer case than this one since the extra run if it goes wrong was not as important on Thurs. and Kershaw was looking at lot better.
