  1. I'm not a huge NBA fan, but I was able to get free tickets to yesterday's game and took my son who loves going to Buck's games. Not only was Houston red hot from 3 point range, but the Bucks were not even close on many of their shots. I love going to games with my son, but I kind of wish we would have stayed home and watched the American Olympic gold rush. Also, I did not see any news about Brandon Jennings. He started the game hot, scoring the Bucks first 7 points. Then, about half way through the 1st Qtr he came out of the game and then went into the locker room for about 10 minutes. He seemed to play sparingly after that. I was curious as to what happened.
  2. I wish they would have a similar policy at Spring Training. The grown men with their binders of cards are just over the top and have no qualms about pushing children aside to get their prize.
  3. Not sure why but Evan Lysacek reminds me of this guy: http://images.yuku.com/image/pjpeg/59c2589948764f6b98a17da5f76f11b92b50872.pjpg http://images.yuku.com/image/pjpeg/538251f9827acfef9a51f346d6d800ef4cc93a9.pjpg
  4. Oh..I didn't realize that's what Successories was...ok, I guess that's fairly humorous.
  5. Ok...sorry, I'm a bit slow...I don't get it. Is it because a store with Success in the name is closing?
  6. I thought there was talk a while back of Wisconsin issuing Brewer license plates (similar to the Packer plates). Anyone hear anything more about this?
  7. To me the drop off has to do with less games after the All-Star break more than the derby. I'm not necessarily saying that the Derby had to do with the drop off, but I definitly don't think it was number of games. The ratios don't really match up. There are less games in the second half but not enough to warrant 21 vs 11, 17-7, and 18-6 drop offs.
  8. Ok, I know very little about art or about figure skating, but I tend to equate the two. Seems like if you have some success and make a name for yourself in art (sometimes in art is appears as if though it's not how good you are, but who you know), then from that point on, you can basically take a blank canvas, spray paint a line down the middle, and sell it for $100k. I view skating the same way. I'm sure someone will tell me how totally wrong I am on both ends (art and skating) I also don't like that the announcers seem to know what the entire routine is going to be before it even starts. Where's the element of surprise? Same with gymnastics.
  9. This is a bit OT, but I know there was a lot of hand ringing last year about pitchers who were participating in the WBC and if they should be involved in that type of competitive environment before the start of the season. Does anyone know of any follow up research on this? Is there any evidence to show that these pitchers tended to have down years or wore down (more than normal) at the end of last year?
  10. Didn't Jeff Kent say that he fell out of his truck, when in fact, he got hurt riding his motorcycle or something like that?
  11. Thanks for the info snyttri. That does seem to be a pretty convincing argument against the whole 2nd half drop off theory. I would be interested in seeing the 1st/2nd half numbers of players who advanced to the later rounds vs players out after the first round. Probably similar numbers, but I'd be curious anyways. Yeah, I guess the OPS differences are not that big, but I thought the HR drops offs were significant (of course there may have been injuries that I'm not aware of).
  12. I never said that anyone should have a clause in their contract that does not allow them to hit a baseball or participate in a HR derby. I was responding to prophets post that basically stated that clubs should never put any clauses in contracts regarding what players can and can not do in the off season. I don't agree with this. If I have invested millions of dollars in a player, there are certain things (does not necessarily include HR derbys or Winter ball) that I'm not going to want him to do during the off season. As far as HR derby effecting performance. It's well known that there has been some cases that correlate participation in the All Star HR derby to 2nd half drop offs in performance. This is not always the case (see Prince Fielder last year). There is no long term consistant statistic correllation. But there have definitly been isolated cases of severe drop offs of 2nd half production: 2008 - Josh Hamilton - 1st half: 21HR/.919OPS 2nd Half: 11HR/.874OPS 2007 - Alex Rios 1st 17/.870 2nd 7/.831 2005 - Bobby Abreu 1st 18/.955 2nd 6/.787 Then there are also the players that seem to show no effect or even improve in the second half like Fielder, Howard, and Tejada. So, you could definitely argue that it's just coincidence. I think it's the severity of some of the drop offs of past HR derby participants that worries some. You're probably right. There probably is no real harm in doing something like this. However, I like to error on the safe side.

  14. Exactly! They're human beings and last I looked, this is still America. Whatever they want to do on they're free time is up to them. And, putting clauses in contracts to dissuade players from doing what they enjoy is ludicrous too. The Brewers take the risk of off-season injury whenever they sign a player to a contract. They shouldn't, and we shouldn't, have the right to tell players how they have to live their lives within the law. It's their choice as human beings and that's the bottom line. Besides, Prince launched a bunch that almost knocked satellites out of orbit at the All-Star game and he had a pretty good second half. If a player is going to get paid milions of dollars a year, i think it's perfectly reasonable to have clauses in contracts for teams to protect their investments. It's really not that unusual or far fetched.
  15. Hmmm...not sure if I'm a big fan of our star left fielder participating in a pre-Spring Training HR derby: http://www.bradenton.com/miamihurricanes/story/2055476.html
  16. I know this is going to get locked soon...but why would this be discussed in the Minor League forum??
  17. On Baseball Tonight they are listing one of the Brewers key off season losses as being Ben Sheets. Uuuggghhhh!
  18. I'm really enjoying the short track racing tonight. It's amazing how these guys jockey for position.
  19. Yeah, this same topic came up with the WBC. For instance, Vinney Rottino playing for Italy (among many other odd conections to countries)?Under this logic, only Native Americans should play for the USA team.
  20. I was hoping RUSH would be involved in the opening ceremony. Oh well, maybe they will play in the closing ceremony. I agree about figure skating and too much of it in prime time. It's hard for me to get too much into a sport where the outcome is entirely in the hands of the judges. It all seems very biased. The people that are favored get more favorable scores than the "no names". Kind of like the Braves pitching staff in the 90's.
  21. Not to get too off topic, but I have a love/hate attitude towards Dibble. Sometimes he can be very entertaining, but other times his views are just oversimplistic. The other day he was talking about how baseball is not broken and he was basically against any further form of revenue sharing. Five minutes later he was talking about guys like Texiera, Sabatihia, Fielder, and even Mauer...stating that he doesn't blame (or would not blame) any guys like this for wanting to go play with a big market club that can afford to pay them and still be competitive instead of staying on a team that would have to pay them over a 1/4 of their total payroll and wouldn't have any money to build a lineup around them. I don't blame them either, but how can you say that and then also claim that baseball isn't broken? His argument against revenue sharing is that teams that are getting it are not using it. Other than 1 or 2 teams, I would like to see proof of this. Giving a small market team10, 20 or 30 million is not suddenly going to raise their payroll to $125 million, or even $100 million, or $90 million, or $80 million for that matter.
  22. 5..4...3... Countdown till someone mentions some study that suggests that a professional sports team adds no economic value to the surrounding community. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/eyes.gif I can't fathom how that could be true, but if somehow it is, what about just a basic quality of live value that it brings to the community?
  23. MLB network on XM can be very close to ESPN at times. They will drone on and on about the Yankees bullben or some other mondane issue related to the Yankess that they would not waste 2 seconds on with a small market team. I called them once and complained about this. One of there comments to me was actually that a majority of their listeners are from the East Coast, which is true judging by the calls they get. However, I thought the same thing. Maybe if they spent more time on other teams they would get more listeners from other parts of the country.
  24. I'm really not understanding why people are having such a hard time with the statue idea. I don't get all this talk about "it should just be a bust" or "put it down the 3rd base line somewhere". Hey, I know, why don't we just put a portrait of him in one of the elevators or in a utility closet? Geez. The guy is the Brewers. No Bud Selig. No Brewers. No Miller Park. No Yount statue. No Aaron statue (not in front of Miller Park anyways). If anyone who has ever been part of the organization deserves a statue, It's Bud Selig. He deserves a statue, a street, a parking section, and a day in his honor. There's a whole stadium named after the founder of an organization about about 115 miles north of Milwaukee. Yes I realize that man was also a player and a coach, but we are just talking about a statue, not a hallowed shrine. What is it, because you don't like the way he looks? If he looked more like Vince Lombardi would you be ok with it?
  25. I feel very strongly about this and I'm trying my best to abide by the rules of the brewerfan.net I gotta agree with obsessedwithbrewcrew. How can any person who claims to be a Brewer fan not agree with this honor for Selig that is long overdue? Yes, 'hold the taxpayers hostage', so that the community can enjoy a MLB team and a state of the art stadium that attracts 3 million per year. What a horrible thing! I'd much rather live some place like Des Moines or Omaha. Congratulations and thanks Bud! You deserve it!
