  1. Won't get any arguments from me on the greatness of Robin Yount. My License plate is 19 HOF
  2. Hmmm....I always thought that this was one of the rules anyways? Edit: Found these MLB rules from 2011: http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/downloads/y2011/Official_Baseball_Rules.pdf Rule 7.06: NOTE: The catcher, without the ball in his possession, has no right to block the pathway of the runner attempting to score. The base line belongs to the runner and the catcher should be there only when he is fielding a ball or when he already has the ball in his hand.
  3. I just hope that if there is a snowstorm that it holds off until the 2nd....leaving for FL on the 1st..can't wait to escape this weather for a while!
  4. He just seemed like a genuinely nice and approachable person with an incredible sense of humor. The majority of his movies were made when I was in my teens and twenties and they are some of my favorite movies. I had no idea that he had been sick. Very sad.
  5. Like that list...I got Belt, Cingrani, and Wheeler in my 11 team NL only fantasy league!
  6. So the latest "coldest winters" graphic on the NWS site for Milwaukee (Dec 1 - Feb 22) has this winter currently as the 12th coldest recorded winter since 1870. http://www.crh.noaa.gov/news/display_cmsstory.php?wfo=mkx&storyid=99978&source=0 The scary part to me is this: 1916-1917-14th coldest - 17.8 avg temp 1917-1918-5th coldest - 15.5 1919-1920-15th coldest - 17.9 1976-1977 3rd coldest - 14.7 1978-1979 8th coldest - 16.2 1981-1982 10th coldest -17.1 I sure hope this doesn't mean that this is the start of a trend for the next 5-10 years as was the case during these two time periods (1916-1920 and 1976-1982).
  7. I told my boss that I think my production is falling off because I'm working too much...but that didn't fly.
  8. I'm with you FVBrewerFan. Although I also really enjoy the snow board cross racing, ski cross racing, and short track speed skating. I have a hard time watching sports that are judged. I watched a little of the women's figure skating last night, saw some of the competitors fall, and then read stories this morning about how some of those skaters that fell won and questions about biased judging. Also, anyone see the comments from the Netherlands speed skating coach? He basically bashed the U.S. and it's sports...stating things like "Americans always think they are correct" and talking about how American football is a joke where guys just try to injure each other and that it's a sport that doesn't matter because there is no international competition.
  9. I'm guessing you were not active on the brewerfan site when Hammonds was signed (brownish color site...not even sure if it was called brewerfan at that time). I swear I was the only person on the site that was not happy about the Hammonds signing on that site when it happened. I remember taking a lot of bashing for being so negative about it.
  10. Geez..you would think if he was engaging in that type of activity on a public computer that he would try to remain discreet and not have a ring tone that called attention to him.
  11. I just never heard this (34%?). I just tried searching, but couldn't find anything that talked about how much teams share from their TV contracts. So, I'm not sure where you are getting this from. I found this article from 2012 that states: "The money from each team’s local TV deal is mostly kept by the team. " http://www.letsgotribe.com/cleveland_indians_2012_2013_offseason/2012/10/31/3581100/new-mlb-tv-contracts-to-impact-salaries Money may be "pouring into MLB", but that doesn't mean that every team is reaping the same benefits. I think it means that the rich are getting richer and are driving up the prices for FAs. Even if High and Tight is correct (and I don't think he is) and that "34% of TV deals get shared in many cases". That would mean that out of the $340 million per year that the Dodgers are getting, $115 million goes to revenue sharing. Let's say that there are 25 teams that share equally in the revenue sharing money. I'm not sure if that is anywhere close to the truth, but for argument sake that means the Brewers would get about $4.6 million of that...enough to pay for K-Rod and couple of pre-arb guys. Not really what I consider a "huge chunk". Meanwhile LA still has an extra $225 million per year on their TV contract alone which I'm guessing is 8-10 times the amount of TV contracts for teams like the Brewers, Pirates, and Royals.
  12. I'm not sure how anyone can say payroll can be higher or that payroll could be $120 million unless they have actually seen the books. Perhaps you are right, but not sure how such claims can be made without really knowing the facts. No one really knows outside of the people who run MLB teams...not even Forbes knows. They can make an educated guess, but they don't know anything for certain. In addition, I think owners are entitled to make a profit if they can. Not just a equity in the team profit, but an actual cash profit. Also, I'm not sure if a "large chunk" of TV deals like the Dodgers have go into revenue sharing. I guess it depends on what you consider a large chunk. Whatever it is, it certainly does not put teams like the Brewers, Pirates, Twins, and Royals on the same level as the Yankees, Red Sox, Dodgers, and Angels.
  13. Yeah, that show is like a bad car wreck. I feel guilty for watching it. I wonder if the coaches/parents watch it and gain any sense of how horrible their behavior is. Unfortunately I'm guessing the answer to that is no, that they just continue to rationalize everything in the name of "toughening up" the boys.
  14. Interesting...but I'm not sure I'm getting the correlation. Is the air cold because the Ocean is cold or is the Ocean cold because the air is cold? If the Air is cold because the Ocean is cold, what causes the Ocean to get cold (or warm)? And if the Ocean is cold because the air is cold is there really a whole lot of predictive value in the AMO? Seems like the same as putting a pot of water on a burner and when it starts boiling saying "I know that burner is hot because the water is boiling" (like the boiling water is causing the burner to be hot) when actually the water is boiling because the burner is hot.
  15. Obligatory "Al Gore-related" comment. For the record..wasn't trying to make any type of political commentary, just always found it funny that they even had a class with this name (and I took it!). Also took "Forecasting the weather" my freshman year with Bart Adrian as the teacher.
  16. So currently this Dec/Jan is the 17th coldest for Milwaukee since 1870 (according to this chart from the NWS): Dec/Jan Rank Avg Temp (F) 1976-1977 1 12.7 1876-1877 2 12.9 1917-1918 3 15.0 1892-1893 4 15.3 1919-1920 T5 15.7 1962-1963 T5 15.7 1886-1887 7 15.9 1958-1959 8 16.1 1884-1885 T9 16.4 1983-1984 T9 16.4 1872-1873 T11 16.7 1903-1904 T11 16.7 1874-1875 T11 16.7 1981-1982 14 16.8 1880-1881 15 17.4 1978-1979 16 17.5 2013-2014 17 17.6 1887-1888 18 18.1 1882-1883 19 18.7 1961-1962 20 18.8 What I find odd is that none of the years between Jan 1920 and Dec 1958 are on that chart and 8 of the periods are 1960 or later. I don't remember a whole lot about it, but I took a 1 credit elective when I was in college called "Are we headed for another ice age".
  17. Even with Pittsburgh's apparent hesitation to move pitchers up the system too quickly, I'm guessing Jameson Taillon will be in the Pirates rotation either on opening day or sometime before the end of May.
  18. Not to get off topic...but Attanasio is not a billionaire.
  19. Even if what you say about PEDs is true (I don't hold those same beliefs), the fact remains that PEDs are currently against the rules of baseball. If the majority of atheletes in a particular sport believe the same way you believe then they should make an effort to work with owners to allow such substances and put it in the collective bargaining agreement. Until then, taking these substances is cheating, and I don't have a whole lot of sympathy for those who deliberately break the rules. As a pre-emptive response to your "What about pitchers that doctor balls" response. Again, if players/owners think that the punishment for such acts by a pitcher should be harsher, then they should work together to change those rules. What's hilarious is that even after everything that he has done and said, people are so quick to believe things that Braun says including his reasoning as to why he was taking PEDs. Personally, it's going to take a little more time for me to start believing him again.
  20. He isn't? If I work with someone who uses dishonesty and breaks company policies to get ahead do you not think he/she is in effect stealing from me and other employees? Are you really going to compare an actor taking PEDs to supplement a role they are playing (as a wrestler would do!) to an athlete who is competing against other teams and other athletes and is supposed to be following rules that have been established for all athletes playing that sport? I don't know what rules actors have in place for what they can do to "look the part", but when I go to a movie I understand that it's not real. Why do people always bring this up whenever someone brings up raising children in a PED discussion? I was not saying what you are inferring at all. In fact just a couple of days ago my teenage son got back a final semester exam grade in one of his classes. It was one grade lower than what he was erroneously posted on the online grading system the night before. He immediately brought this up to his teacher even though it would mean that he would end up with a final semester grade of B+ in that class instead of A- because of the correction. I couldn't have been more proud of him and I would like to believe that he did this because my wife and I raised him with the idea that he should earn things on self merit alone and to be honest. My comment in my original post was that it appears that there is a portion of the population that doesn't seem to have a problem with cheating as long as you believe everyone else is doing it and I'm concerned that they are raising their kids with the same values.
  21. My only complaint about Scottsdale is the Giants facility and parking. I prefer the other sites that have large surface parking lots. To me the absolute worst facility in AZ is Oakland's....they don't even have an outfield berm.
  22. Once again, JimH puts it in words better than I ever could. I pretty much agree with what he said. My hostile feeling towards Braun are not as strong as there once were. My frustration is more towards the population out there who just shrug off PEDs or are actually for PED's if they make the product on the field "more exciting to watch". What about reality? Do you have any interest in watching that? All sports could be more exciting if the games were fixed..if pitchers purposely threw meat pitches so that there could me more HR's because that's "more exciting" to watch. Do you think all professional sports should just go the way of professional wrestling and throw all honesty and integrity out the window? Also, this whole "everyone is doing it so it's ok" philosophy...really? I sure hope this is not how people are raising their children.
  23. Uggghh...Ok, I should bite my tongue because getting involved in Braun discussions just usually makes me angry, but I can't help myself... So, wanting the be the best you can be is an excuse for cheating? If I want to be the best poker player is it ok for me to cheat at it to accomplish that goal? I want lots of money, so it's ok for me to steal it? If you don't think that's a fair comparison then I guess we will just have to disagree.
  24. I'm a big user of online reviews and ratings when it comes to things like this. You might have a friend who says.."Yeah, I have an HP and it's great" or "Don't buy a Dell. I have one and it stinks"...but I always have a hard time going by what one or two friends/relatives tell me about a product. Too small of a sample size. Perhaps they just happened to get a lemon or they are too proud to admit that they made a mistake and so they tell you that everything they ever purchased is "great". Here are a few sites that review laptops: http://www.pcworld.com/category/laptop-computers/ http://reviews.cnet.com/laptops/ I also like consumer reports, but it requires a subscription ($30 per year or $6.96 per month).
