  1. Its not even the loss thta bothers me. Its the way we have lost most of our games of late. Blowing a 5 run lead in the 9th. Blowing a 3 run lead with your closer on the mound 2 outs and nobody on? I mean you almost couldn't lose that game if you tried yet for the 4th or 5th time this year we did exactly that. Bullpen is now spent and we have Vargas pitching tomorrow on the road. yuck......
  2. Don't worry Johnny and Ned we aren't panicking. Everything is fine. We believe you...............
  3. Replay of game 2. Get up big early. Stop scoring and watch the pitching give up the lead. Groundhog day.
  4. "Al Reyes -- journeyman relief pitcher coming off TJ surgery, somehow meets your bizarre criteria of successful closers" As far as this year goes you bet he meets my criteria. I'm not saying he has been a great pitcher .......but he is getting the job done this year. 17/18 in save opportunities. I'm not sure we aren't on the same side in this. I agree that most decent relief pitchers should be able to get the job done which makes it all the more frustrating that we have blown 6 or 7 games in the 9th this year. 5 by CC and at least 1 by Turnbow. We are 5 games below .500 when the game is decided by the closers this year. When you are 20 games below .500 nobody cares about such things but when you are trying to win the division for the first time in 25 years it tends to get a little more attention.
  5. So if all closers blow games then why are we 1-42 when trailing after 8? http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/frown.gif
  6. So an 8.5 game lead is about to go to 1.5. We can't win on the road. Our closer has blown 5 saves and we have returned the favor far to infrequently (1-41 when trailing after 8). Our best pitcher is on the DL and our defense and bullpen seems to have sprung a leak. The team has played below .500 ball for going on 3 months now after a hot start and to top it off we just faced a guy who was 0-10 with an ERA close to 7 and he held us to 2 runs on 2 hits. What part of that is supposed to be fun? Why is it that when people get frustrated by a teams poor play over an extended period of time players and coaches have to accuse the fans and media of "panicking"? (fixed accidentally posted emoticon --1992)
  7. I think they may have won a million games in a row when leading after 9 innings....................http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  8. Not surprisingly Ned disagreed. I guess Ryan didn't get the memo of how to do Yost speak after the brewers blow games after being up 5 or 6 runs early. From the Game recap on Yahoo: Braun thought the Brewers, up 6-0 in the third inning, might have relaxed. "I feel like recently we've had quite a few games similar to this when we score early and then we kind of let our guard down a little bit," Braun said. "We can't do that anymore." Yost disagreed with that assessment. "It's never a tendency to shut it down," Yost said. "It wasn't like we weren't trying, we just shut down and were having a little bit of a party in between innings."
  9. Me too but thats what they said.
  10. Yes all closers blow games but most of the good ones are blowing far less then Cordero has this year. Pappelbon has blown 1, Putz 1, Wagner 1, Hoffman 2. Even Al Reyes has only blown 1, Dempster 2, Gregg 1 etc. The only closer to have blown more games then Coco's 5 is Chad Cordero with the Nationals who has giving away 7. I understand that CC has had more opportunities but his save percentage is now down to 86 which is about the middle of the pack So we have an average closer now and with all the close games we play we really need an elite one.
  11. I was watching the Cubs Reds game last night and they said on the air that the Reds have won 82 games in a row now when leading after 8 innings. Obviously they have blown some leads during that stretch(including last night) but it goes to show you that it shouldn't be that hard to close out games like the one today and the one against Cincy. The offense shares some of the blame today as well.
  12. He has been brutal on the road. How many times are we going to score 5 or 6 runs early and then take the rest of the game off this year? Games like this are just killers.
  13. Does anyone know how many division winners in the last 10 years or so have had records below .500 on the road? I'm sure its happened but i wouldn't think it happens often.
  14. He sure isn't what he used to be and he sure isn't average this season. 2007 ERA 5.08 WHIP 1.56 BAA .302 2006 4.12 1.45 .277 2005 3.57 1.38 .275 Suppan has turned the whole league into a .300 hitter and that includes pitchers being thrown into the mix. He is giving up almost a run a game more then last year.
  15. Can't see the name Ken Phelps in a post without thinking of this..... Frank Costanza (yelling): What the hell did you trade Jay Buhner for?!? He had 30 home runs, over 100 RBIs last year, he's got a rocket for an arm, you don't know what the hell you're doin'!! Steinbrenner: Well, Buhner was a good prospect, no question about it. But my baseball people love Ken Phelps' bat. They kept saying 'Ken Phelps , Ken Phelps'.
  16. plus Suppan has a 2 year no trade clause I believe.
  17. They are sure have been doing a nice impression of a good team for awhile now.............. Why is it when the brewers play good its because we have a good team but when the Cubs play well its because "things are going right for them"?
  18. They do count rest days as days he is not on the mound but you said he threw 85 pitches 3 days ago. He did not. He didn't throw Saturday, Sunday or Monday. He threw 92 pitches 4 days ago.
  19. Yo pitched on friday which would make it 4 days ago not 3.
  20. I believe Bill James did a study debunking the myth that hitting in front of a great player improves the performance of another player. IIRC he concluded that great players hit no matter where they are in the lineup or who is batting infront or behind them and mediocre players don't improve significantly because they are hitting infront of a great hitter.
  21. Thats the best at bat Billy has had all year. He finally is laying off those pitches out of the strike zone. Need the bullpen to do the job now.
  22. or I suppose they could close the gap by hitting .200 in all at bats the rest of the season bringing the team average down to .250.......http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/frown.gif Watching this team play is like going to the dentist right now.
  23. For those of you who have done the research here is my question. Over the long haul will a team(or player) that is hitting significantly below average with RISP usually begin to see that number rise toward the average or are the two completely unrelated? I mean it is apsolutely amazing how little we do with our baserunners ......tonight its so bad its almost a joke. I'm hoping we are just kind of unlucky but i'm starting to think its not going to even out this year. You would think we could score a few runs just by accident.......http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/frown.gif
  24. Cheer up guys. No matter how badly we play the Cards and the Cubbies manage to keep pace......http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif Cards losing to KC 15-0 in the 6th........Cubs down 3-2 in the 8th.
  25. Congrats to Verlander. He adds his name to an Illustrious list of pitchers who have no hit the Brewers. Scott Erickson, Steve Busby and Justin Verlander......... Nothing like building on the 22 hit explosion on Sunday night! At least we battled and played a lineup full of "gamers" tonight. So we had that going for us....which is nice...........
