  1. I'd have to think Ethier's extension would be what Hart's agent presents as a comparable. Maybe he'd settle for 4 years instead of 5 or a slightly lower AAV but I think it would take one of these: 4 yrs / $68M 5 yrs / $80M I wouldn't want either of those, which is why I think we should trade Hart. Maybe we can get more return in the offseason but Doug should at least listen to see what's out there now.
  2. Don't we have a thread specifically for venting?
  3. Let's see if this works: http://rumorsontheinternets.files.wordpress.com/2012/04/sadwingflap.gif
  4. Cody Ransom is really good at striking out. I wonder if he'll be the new Branyan around here...
  5. The Brewers just want to make this whole sell/not sell thing a tough decision.
  6. Okay I'm sick of this Ruggiano guy. Can someone please send him back to the 1980 olympic hockey team?
  7. Many people have suggested this already. I doubt Greinke would completely rule us out of the bidding, but we'd still have to come with the best offer (or very close to it).
  8. And I think we're in agreement that we need to improve our farm system. However, I'm not of the opinion that we should take solid major leaguers and "take what we can get" for them. If you can get a Zach Lee or a Teheran for someone who isn't signed long term, then great. But don't trade them for a lottery ticket.
  9. Okay, I know this doesn't have to do with Hart but TheCrew, you mentioned that Ramirez shouldn't have been signed to his contract. I'll just say that I completely disagree as free agent value per win is typically around $5M. We guaranteed him $36M for three years. He should easily accumulate the 7 wins over these three seasons to make the contract more than worth-while. The only problem is that his production likely won't match the amounts that he's paid each year. We'll "profit" on the signing this year but may lose a bit in year 3. That's the nature of most free agent contracts and it isn't necessarily a bad thing. I would venture to say that if Ramirez would be a free agent after this year, he'd get much more than 2 for 20.
  10. The only thing I"ll respond to from that post was the Zach Lee thing about him only averaging 5 IP per start. The guy is only 20 years old. Most teams have their lower minors pitchers on strict pitch counts. Jungmann is 2 years older and averages less than 6 IP per start. Lee is in AA right now so he should be ready for the bigs by 2014. Losing Hart would certainly hurt our chances for next year but it would also free up $10M to go after another guy. I'm not necessarily looking to trade Hart, but if there is a guy with top of the rotation potential available for him, I'd jump on it.
  11. Rachel Dratch's mom
  12. I'd much rather have them spend the $125K on paying off one lucky fan's student loans
  13. If we can get Zach Lee in a deal for Hart, I'd be all over it. If not, I probably would pass.
  14. Here's the bulk of the roster that we have signed for next year along with a round number projection of their WAR: Braun - 6 Gomez - 4 Gamel - 4 Hart - 3 Weeks - 3 Ramirez - 3 Lucroy - 3 Gallardo - 3 Fiers - 2 That's 31 WAR right there. Add that to the 43 wins a replacement level team would theoritecally win and we're at about 74 wins if the rest of our team is only replacement level (which is pretty difficult replacement level is very bad). The rest of our players (including those who we get in free agency) would only have to average about .6 WAR for us to be a mid-80's win team. We still do have a good core of players that, with a couple moves, could be right in the playoff race again next year. Now if you get blown away on a trade offer for Hart or Gallardo, then go for it, but I don't think we're in a situation where our only choices are to sign Greinke or blow up the entire roster.
  15. Hart should actually bring back a pretty good return. The free agent class of hitters is weak this coming season and Hart being signed through next year should be very attractive.
  16. I think you completely undermine your post when you say that we've got 3-4 WAR guys with Gomez and Gamel because that would imply that either you think most of our healthy lineup consists of 0 WAR players (Hart, Ramirez, Weeks) or that we could simply take the money from Grienke, Wolf, K-rod, etc. this year and use it toward a pitcher and a shortstop and be right back in the thick of things next year. I also think that a lot of folks on this board completely underestimate how hard it is to built a competitive roster from within. For every Tampa Bay, there are several Royals, Indians, Padres, A's, who are in perpetual rebuilding mode. I really don't want to go back to the days where we win 60 games with the expectation that we'll be World Series contenders in a few years. We did that in the early 2000's. It essentially got us two playoff teams in 5 years. I also don't want to waste three years in the middle of Ryan Braun's prime with a complete rebuild. We might as well just trade Braun then.
  17. I think to trade Gallardo, you'd have to be offered a top 10 type prospect like a Profar or Machado plus another decent prospect. I'm not sure anyone would trade that for him, though, since his BB% as jumped so much this year. If he was putting up the same numbers as last year, I think you probably could get that. From a business perspective, I'm not sure they want to "not compete" in 2013 & 2014. If they finish as badly as they are on pace for this season, they could be looking at < 2.5 million fans next year, which would be a significant hit to revenues.
  18. I know the DH debate has taken place ad nauseum but I had this idea of a "compromise" that I think might actually appeal to both sides. DH proponents' main argument is typically that they'd much rather see a professional hitter at the plate than a pitcher flailing away and batting .100. Fans of the NL style of play typically argue for the additional strategy that is involved in the game. My idea is that both leagues could use the DH but the player in the DH position is tied to the pitcher. Meaning if you remove the pitcher, you also have to remove the DH. Then you could take another player off the bench and insert him into the DH position for as long as the reliever stays in the game. I think it would require some roster changes - maybe by expanding the rosters by a spot or two but I think it would create an interesting dynamic of in-game managing while still allowing for the DH. I think the players union would be in favor of it because, while it would cut the normal DH's plate appearances by 1-2 per game, it would open up 15 new "regular DH" positions in the National League. I don't know whether the owners would be in favor. Thoughts?
  19. http://www.fangraphs.com/statss.aspx?playerid=2280&position=1B Too early to tell on Gamel IMO but I think he'll end up just as a role player at this point. He'll be 27 next month so he'll be entering his prime. If there's ever a time to give him a shot, it'd be in the next couple years but if a better option became available, I wouldn't hesitate because of Gamel.
  20. Did you ever spend like 20 minutes typing a message and then click the wrong button and lose the whole message? I just did that in response to TheCrew07. Ultimately, my point was that the Rays have made some very shrewd moves but the larger factor in their recent run of success was their farm system which was heavily due to them having a top 10 pick every year for a decade.
