  1. If Illitch were so hell-bent on spending his money now, why not give a bunch of it to Scherzer too?
  2. IIRC, one of Brad's Phoenix posts noted Arcia played second base alongside of Rivera. It might be more about pushing Arcia's bat and hoping his development at SS isn't stunted by not playing there every day. I guess I don't have a problem with this if there really is a need to keep Rivera at Brevard again. In an organization short on tools, sacrificing some of Arcia's time at short might be worth it to see if Yadiel can develop at all at the plate... it wouldn't take a lot more offense to give him a good shot at the big club with his defense.
  3. Even as cart-leading-the-horse as that is, I wouldn't be surprised if it's true to some degree.
  4. Josh Prince doesn't bother me, but what in the world are Davis and Rogers doing in AA? They are both entering their age 26 year, and need to sink or swim right now, not tread water in Huntsville. I understand maintaining organizational depth, but Pete Orr made it over both Davis and Rogers? Really? Crazy.
  5. Trying to play Hunter Morris and Garrett Cooper is one thing, but I'll echo TC07 that this is interesting. If you thought Walla was going to make it based on his bat, you'd be one of the few, so at least this gives the Brewers a different way to try to get anything back on their investment.
  6. That's probably true, though if they had a handshake agreement with the Brewers, they might give the Brewers the opportunity to match the best offer from another team. Or, maybe not. Which is why I refuse to get my hopes up for this.
  7. Usually the first list of cuts contains some pretty obvious guys, like Weiss and Dean, but I am baffled at the releases of many of these guys. I imagine there's some back story to some of them, and there'd have to be for Wall and Williams (apart from his suspension). Giacalone I'm less surprised about than most of you I guess. Limited to first base and not much power or athleticism.
  8. Even if Duke has an opt-out he exercises instead of going down to the minors (not sure if he does, but I'd assume so), it's worth losing Duke to keep Wang. Wang is one of the organization's better pitching prospects and it would be completely insane to basically trade him for Zach Duke. I guess there might be an argument for optioning Smith to AAA in order to keep Duke/establish more pitching depth/keep Smith stretched out as a starter. But, we must hold on to Wang.
  9. Pet peeve of mine (and Mass Haas's as well) - it's Rule 5, not Rule V. As for Wang, I think he'd have to fall apart the rest of the spring to not make the team. His arm is too valuable.
  10. At this very second? No. However, the Brewers have a year to think about it given his 2015 option. He just turned 28, so it's not like he's far along the downswing of his career, and he's always been heralded as having clean as clean can be mechanics. I mean, Estrada is turning 31 in July and people (myself included) still think he might finally break out. If Gallardo pitches well this year and his velocity bounces back a little bit, I'd be amenable to a 2-3 year extension which would void the 2015 option. As long as it is at a team-friendly AAV, say $9-10 mil a year. Would he go for that though? No idea. I think the Brewers would actually willingly go to $12m+ AAV over 4 years if he pitches decently in 2014, in a deal similar to Garza's. I wouldn't be in love with that (unless all of the sudden Gallardo is throwing 94 and has a 2.50 ERA), but I don't think it would be a terrible thing, either. I just don't trust that the Brewers would be able to extract equal value in a trade involving Gallardo, especially if he's only signed to an option year.
  11. It takes two to give someone away. Maybe there was no market for a free Butler.
  12. And one of them (Franly Mallen) was signed as a shortstop as well, so it will be interesting to see if one or the other shift off of shortstop this year. Might make sense for a guy with extensive offensive upside like Lara to switch to third base right away. (Not that Lara would be eligible to play with the DSL team this year.) Then again, Clint Coulter.
  13. It won't be official until July 2nd (if it ever is official), and is being discussed in the 2014 draft/international forum.
  14. If the dollar amount is right, the signing will* almost assuredly put the Brewers over the slot value of their international bonus pool, and they probably will sign a few other guys as well. The Mariners had a bonus pool of $2.58m last year in the same slot the Brewers have this year. It will be interesting to see if they try to trade for more room, or take the penalties. *I will refuse to 100% believe this until the transaction is official in July.
  15. BA's top 31 as per their book I just received, apologies if this has already been posted: 1. Jimmy Nelson 2. Tyrone Taylor 3. Mitch Haniger 4. Johnny Hellweg 5. Victor Roache 6. Taylor Jungmann 7. Orlando Arcia 8. David Goforth 9. Devin Williams 10. Hunter Morris 11. Clint Coulter 12. Nick Delmonico 13. Yadiel Rivera 14. Tucker Neuhaus 15. Ariel Pena 16. Tyler Wagner 17. Michael Blazek 18. Jed Bradley 19. Taylor Williams 20. Jason Rogers 21. Kevin Shackelford 22. Barret Astin 23. Damien Magnifico 24. Jorge Lopez 25. Drew Gagnon 26. Omar Garcia 27. Anthony Banda 28. Michael Ratterree 29. Tyler Cravy 30. D'Vontrey Richardson 31. Brooks Hall
  16. This would be amazing if true, but a lot of things can happen between now and July.
  17. May or may not be worth the money, though marginal wins (or fractions of wins) became a bit more valuable to the Brewers after the Garza signing. I said before that I think it would not be in the Brewers' best interests to dish out over $1 mil for another reliever, and I stand by that, even if I do understand the reasoning for the signing. I'd like to see them add another LOOGY type on a minor league deal. With Gorzelanny out, the only left handed pitchers in camp are Smith, Duke, and Wang. Clayton Richard maybe?
  18. WAR over the life of those contracts: Zito: 5.9 or .8/year Meche: 10.1 or 2.0/year (had two really good years after signing, then injuries) Matsuzaka: 10.4 or 1.7/year Schmidt: 0.1 or 0.0/year Suppan: 1.0 or 0.3/year (not counting time spent with Cardinals in 2010) Lilly: 12.8 or 3.2/year Yikes.
  19. I might have missed it, but are the Brewers planning on having a press conference for Garza? Would see odd not to, considering he's the biggest (at least by dollar amount) free agent signing in franchise history.
  20. I think the Bryan/Foley reactions to the Royal Rumble are more likely a work than this. Punk has been yet another victim of the unified title scene. A program with Kane followed by maybe having to job to HHH at Wrestlemania, a year after having to job to the Rock? Yah, I bet he's pissed/frustrated. Punk also said on last week's Ariel Helwani MMA podcast that the only reason he still watches wrestling anymore is because he's wrestling. He sounded fed up. But you never know.
  21. Interesting from DoU: Matt Garza, and the Importance of an Average Rotation
  22. Batista winning the Rumble is so incredibly stupid. If it's Batista vs. Orton, or Batista vs. Orton vs. Cena for the title at Wrestlemania, the fans in attendance are going to crap all over that match. And with the title unification, they've really written themselves into a corner. Wyatt vs. Bryan was phenomenal, though. That flying Sister Abigail into the barricade was nuts.
  23. Agreed. He was tipping his curve by throwing it. No reason for anyone to swing at it when it's missing almost every time. And somewhere earlier in the thread, someone blasted the Brewers medical staff, with something to the effect of "If Garza was injured, the Brewers might not even figure it out." The Brewers have one of the best regarded medical staffs/organizational health philosophies in the game. BA (or maybe MLB.com?) did a feature article on them about a year ago. The Brewers make all manner of questionable personnel moves, but making uninformed remarks about the organization is dumb.
  24. OMG I bet it's Sean Berry.
