  1. The signing bonus he received was in line was more than what the 17th overall pick received, and was generally in line with what players in the mid 1st round got that year. If you want to compare 6th rounders, we took Danny Ray Keller in 2011. Where are people even getting this? As recently as this morning, quoth BA: Brooks Robinson? No, but not Ryan Braun either.
  2. I don't believe there's a consensus that Delmonico can't play defense?
  3. If Braun had never done whatever it was that he got suspended for, I doubt anyone would have much cared if he was a liar.
  4. Exactly what I was coming here to post. Amongst other things mostly stated here already, BA's preseason writeup said:
  5. Obviously not very, but that doesn't mean we can't have some sort of rationality in the observation of who he is and what he did wrong. His irresponsibility does not dictate that those judging him should do so irresponsibly.
  6. You're right that being a Brewer fan, and specifically a Ryan Braun fan, is going to be hard knocks for quite some time, but what makes perpetuating name calling the right course of action? I don't see how referring to him as "Lyin' Ryan" helps the conversation, especially when we don't know what he was (or was not) lying about.
  7. Ryan Braun is a member of the group of people who are over 2 years old and have lied. Which includes everybody over 2. It doesn't make it right that he lied (assuming that he lied, and not even knowing what he lied about specifically), but let's get the facts before tacking on witty nicknames.
  8. Here's the interview. Besides the the Tragic Illness blog linked above, the above-linked Deadspin piece is the most relevant thing I've read on the subject. Braun is being lambasted and vilified for... what's been confirmed again?
  9. Not that what they're saying is wrong, but those are some pretty high horses.
  10. I feel that way sometimes, too.
  11. It uses 2000 data, but here's a ranking of baseball (and other major sport) cities by market size.
  12. That's totally going to screw the DSL Brewers' Pythagorean winning percentage.
  13. All Gomez had to do was not swing and the game would be tied. Also, a coach should have gone the extra mile and gotten himself kicked out on the Khris Davis AB. Yes, he did go, but yes, that's why they have a first base ump.
  14. Anderson de la Rosa doing the ol' catcher playing center field trick tonight. I wonder what Kentrail Davis thinks about this.
  15. I apologize if I've missed it, but has there been any news as to why Danny Ray Keller has only made one start (the home opener) this year?
  16. I didn't notice it until now, but Michael Reed had a really good June. While the power isn't there yet, he's upped his walk rate and lowered his strike out rate both year over year and as this year has progressed. 27 hits, 21 walks and 9 for 9 in SB attempts in June. Not bad at all.
  17. Brewers Sign Panamanian Catcher Johel Atencio Panamanian catcher Johel Atencio has signed with the Brewers for $130,000. Atencio, 16, is 5-foot-10, 185 pounds and some scouts think his righthanded bat is his best tool. He trained with Emilio Sempris.
  18. Brewers Sign No. 20 International Prospect Nicolas Pierre Dominican outfielder Nicolas Pierre, the No. 20 international prospect for July 2, has signed with the Brewers for $800,000. Pierre, 16, has an athletic 6-foot-3, 170-pound frame and made an impression with some scouts for his bat-to-ball ability from the right side of the plate and overall improvement as July 2 approached. He has good instincts in the outfield and has a chance to play center field. Pierre played in the International Prospect League and trains with Nelson Montes de Oca.
  19. Tampa was my first thought as well. He's a guy they wouldn't have trouble plugging in any of the outfield spots and he's cheap, at least for a little while. I think the Pirates would like him, but I don't think they'd like him enough to part with the package the Brewers would probably ask for from a division foe.
  20. Mets Sign No. 25 International Prospect Ali Sanchez and White Sox Sign No. 9 International Prospect Micker Zapata
  21. Not to derail this too much, but if the Brewers actually do start selling off to any significant degree, I bet they'll dump Yuni. I'd be shocked if he finished the season with the team even if they don't sell off. However, I don't think the Brewers think that Halton is a regular player in the bigs (which is debatable, though it seems to be validated somewhat by the prospect-watcher community), and Morris' contact ability presently leaves something to be desired. He hit .311 in June and is still not mustering even a .240 BA on the season. So I don't think that Hellweg's situation is really comparable to theirs. Hellweg has an amazing arm. He makes Wily Peralta's good hard stuff look almost pedestrian. You'd like the peripherals to be better, but it's nearly impossible for RHB to square him up. Their only hope is to pound it into the ground and hope it finds a hole. I worry about his ability to combat LHB, but we'll see how much his breaking stuff has come around. Plus, you know, who else are they going to call up? Chris Saenz isn't available. Ideally I'd like to see him be given more time in AAA to iron things out, but it won't be the worst thing to give him some experience against MLB hitters. And even if he fails for a start or two and gets sent down, he'll be that much more motivated to get back.
  22. I've been listening on and off the past few days to Steve Wendt, but it really makes my summer as soon as I get to hear him calling baseball games. Aside from Jim Powell, he's the best there is in my book. He's been very complimentary of Taylor Brennan, said he has big time power potential and good bat speed.
  23. Mark Henry got some pretty good heat during his title run a year or two ago. 3MB?
  24. I'm walking home and as Mike Ratterree is drafted, I'm listening to "Battery" by Metallica... Mike. RAT-TERR-EE. If he ever makes it to Miller Park, this better be his walk up music. RAT-TERR-EE.
  25. Perfect Game on Garcia: "Omar Garcia is a 2011 OF with a 5-11 170 lb. frame from Oviedo, FL who attends Lake Howell HS. Live athletic build, some present strength. Excellent runner, 6.53/4.23 home to first from the right side. Quick hands hitting, sound swing mechanics, calm approach, good balance, some extension out front, some present bat speed, line drive contact. Good raw arm strength, footwork and approach to the ball still need developing. High ceiling athlete who can improve. Good student. Signed with High Point. " I like.
