  1. Villanueva's BABIP: .148 (career .278) Villanueva's LOB%: 93% (career 74.9%) Villanueva's HR/FB: 6.9% (career 12.2%) His ERA is 1.48. He has a 3.77 xFIP and 3.85 SIERA, so pitching well, but he does appear to be pitching with quite a bit of luck. He's almost the anti-Greinke. The jury is still out if he's worth the $1.45M he's getting paid this year. Probably will be.
  2. Unless you have an extremely, extremely tight definition of the word "prospect," yes, Corey Hart was a prospect.
  3. Also continuing the throwing merriment - and neither of these will show up in the box score, exactly - Gamel and Kottaras both dropped the baseball while running with it during two different rundown plays between third and home. Gamel's gaffe proved less costly than Kottaras' as he was able to pick up the ball and throw it to Taylor Green to get the runner at home. Kottaras wasn't as lucky, as the guy he was chasing was safe returning to third when George dropped the ball. I stress that all either of them were doing was running with a baseball in their hand when they dropped it. I don't think I've seen that more than a few times in my whole life, much less twice in one game. Gamel appears to be really struggling with basic, mental aspects of defense. Yesterday he let a slowly hit ground ball roll right between his legs and under his glove. He had enough time to lay down in front of it. Not good. I'm much less optimistic about Gamel at first base than I was at the beginning of the season. He can definitely hit. Defense, not so much. Which is a shame because he has the physical tools to be a good defender at first (or at third, for that matter).
  4. I stayed up to watch the Brewers get 2-hit? Oh... what? Good job team.
  5. I liked the finale. I thought the line about Angela not being able to talk if she wasn't saying anything, just like Kevin, was amazing. Hope they go with Spader. He seemed to have a great, almost Shatner-esque zen about him, and had a good rapport with the cast.
  6. If Katin keeps hitting well until September, I think he may stand a decent shot of getting a call up to be a RH power bat off the bench once rosters expand.
  7. Greinke's BABIP against is .370(!), his strand rate is 49%(!!) and his HR/FB rate is 21.1% (!!!). For perspective, his career levels are .308, 72.2% and 8.7%, respectively. He's been extremely unlucky. His FIP is 2.91, SIERA is 1.74 and xFIP is 1.47. Apart from that... he's obviously not able to keep his breaking stuff sharp yet very far in to the game, but that won't last much longer. The combination of Greinke finding his breaking stuff with the inevitable regression in his luck points to a very, very good run of starts in the near future.
  8. If they think he still has something left and no one else will give him a major league deal, I'd definitely give him a minor league deal with an opt-out date.
  9. I feel pretty good about following this one to the end. http://img4.sunset.com/i/2009/07/cheese-classic-l.jpg?400:400 I really want to make Yet another night where I'm asking myself, "I stayed up to watch THIS?" into a signature somehow, but I won't.
  10. Prince is going to get hit by the Cardinals next time they play.
  11. The good news is: you can never watch baseball again, if you want. It's completely possible.I didn't think that condescending comments were allowed? Not condescending. Snarky. Big diff. Also... YAY!
  12. The good news is: you can never watch baseball again, if you want. It's completely possible.
  13. It not only was a trap, it wasn't even close. Ball bounced 6-8 inches in front of the glove. I'm just as peeved that the Brewers dugout didn't catch it. There should have been 20 people running out to CF and pointing.
  14. Random, useless info... James is the younger brother of former Brewers farmhand Simon Beresford. Simon was one of the last guys the Brewers signed as an amateur out of Australia. Simon Beresford stats from the way-back machine.
  15. His match at WM7 against Ultimate Warrior is my favorite match of all time, a true classic. RIP.
  16. Meyer's command has gotten better, but he still walks plenty of guys. Is there any chance his command improves enough so that if he makes it to Milwaukee, he won't be a high pitch count guy? Are his mechanics good and consistent given his size?
  17. It's inherently difficult to trade this time of year because few teams will be convinced that they're out of it. Even if they are convinced, they'll wait for a market to develop for their marketable guys. The Brewers' best shot right now would be to go after a AAA guy. I'm not sure that they'll do that in the near future with Braddock coming back and Stetter presumably not out that long. I do believe they will trade for a good, veteran LOOGY if they are still in it come mid-late July. But that's down the road quite a bit. Impossible to know who they'll target. I just hope it isn't Franklin Morales. Dude walks a lot of guys.
  18. Patrick, the 90-92 report I got was from this year. His velocity seems to be up a tick or so, and as I mentioned, the changeup has improved enough to project as a average or fringe average major league pitch.
  19. Kottaras is playing poorly. His defense needs to improve a lot before they give him another chance (unless there are catching injuries).
  20. Guerrieri and Rogers have/had different mechanical issues coming out of high school. Rogers did (and still does, to some extent) throw across his body, putting tremendous stress on his arm. The Brewers felt the need to radically overhaul Rogers' entire pitching motion, to obviously poor long-term results. Guerrieri has a pretty clean, 3/4 arm slot delivery. He has a few little hitches that need to be cleaned up, leading to his plant leg coming down late and his arm coming through late, which leads to command problems. There's nothing to radically alter here, and IMO Goldstein is being a bit hyperbolic in his analysis of Guerrieri's delivery "issues." It's clean and repeatable, just needs to be tweaked. The biggest knock against Guerrieri might be some off the field problems that have teams researching his character a little bit. Here's a pretty good view of his delivery:
  21. Austin Ross with a peripherally subpar outing, I guess you'd call it. 5.2 IP, 3 H, 3 BB, 3 K. No earned runs. Edit: 83 pitches, 51 for strikes.
  22. I'm thinking that they're looking at Greene for the 2nd or 3rd round selection. I just can't believe they would reach so far in the first round in such a deep draft. Jungmann's violent head snap at the end of his delivery makes my neck sore to look at, his mechanics aren't very clean and his third pitch, a changeup, is questionable. I like that he attacks the zone and all, but there's too much that makes me pause about him to think it would be a good idea at 12. I'm thinking 15 might end up being a college position player, but Wong instead of Mahtook. I'd like a HS player at 12. I love Swihart, but a pitcher would be ok, too. I've soured on Baez quite a bit.
  23. The velocities YoungGeezy referenced are correct. Bucci is working this year right around 90-92, touching 93 or 94. His curveball is decent to good, changeup has gotten to the point where it is no longer a liability pitch. He's mixing it in well. The Brewers love him to pieces. He doesn't really have a single outstanding pitch, but he's doing an excellent job of keeping his stuff down this year. Not only down, but as it obvious by his lowered walk rate, down and in or around to the zone. The team thinks he has excellent mound moxie, and he's been called the hardest working pitcher in the system. Take those things for what you will. I'm guessing that if you asked the Brewers, they would tell you he has the upside of a #2. I wouldn't buy that, but it's possible he could be a 3 or a strong 4, innings eater type pitcher. I don't think he'll get promoted until late in the year, if at all, being that he's 20. Even if he keeps up this pace and keeps improving. No need to rush him.
  24. You need an ESPN Insider subscription to read more about it, but Keith Law has the Brewers drafting Taylor Jungmann and Mikie Mahtook. The more I've looked at Jungmann, the less I like him. Mahtook is a decent idea for 15.
  25. The Brewers have now had 6 members of their bullpen spend time on the DL this year. That's pretty crazy for the middle of May.
