  1. Assuming two players have basically equal value offensively, and assuming one will play 110 games, while the other will play 140 games, the guy who plays 110 games will naturally be inferior. He doesn't have the opportunity to make the same impact as his equivalent counterpart.
  2. I don't think you want Nelson playing the outfield on a regular basis. He doesn't have the arm he used to, either. I do think Iribarren might be the 25th guy on the roster next year. He's hit every year except 2008, and he can play 2B along with the outfield.
  3. It all comes down to... would you rather have a right handed bat in CF, or would you rather try to find a left-handed replacement for one of the top 5-10 CF in the game, and at what cost? At $10 million, I don't think there was much of a choice for the Brewers.
  4. Just to play devil's advocate for Khalil Green for a moment: Career home splits: .225/.289/.369 Career away splits: .270/.318/.484 Now Milwaukee's primary offensive need is OBP, and Green is a downgrade from Hardy there. He's also fairly mediocre in the field. He's a legit downgrade overall from Hardy. However, he's been a pretty decent shortstop away from Petco over the course of his career.
  5. No, you have to offer them arbitration, or have another team sign the guy before 12/2. Read more on it here.
  6. I've heard you're, uh, very quick on your download. That's whats she said. http://www.speedtest.net/result/349253622.png Eat my uploading dirt, Matthew.
  7. Medicine is a better shoegaze band than My Bloody Valentine. "Loveless" and "Shot Forth Self Living are virtually equal, with the slight edge to MBV. However, "Isn't Anything" isn't anywhere close to the rest of Medicine's catalog.
  8. Laura, CopyMax was not part of the dream, though I did dream about test-sitting in their office chairs. I just read that King of the Hill was canceled. I thought it was canceled a number of years ago... Chuck Mangione bits get boring after awhile.
  9. About arbitration and the 80% rule for free agents, here quoth the CBA: http://images.yuku.com/image/jpeg/42615c459bd794261537b00430ebea8240177b1.jpghttp://images.yuku.com/image/jpeg/f2c358a6428e957dded8993f291db6f96877949.jpg Key words being "under reserve" in the first sentence. http://images.yuku.com/image/jpeg/3f71584592d49e297290edfa9b619c73684a38a.jpg Which is: http://images.yuku.com/image/jpeg/94925ec4ba916ddb9f92288d13ed6c93b4d0120.jpg So it is correct that the 80% rule does not apply to an impending free agent.
  10. I had a dream last night that completely centered around shopping at OfficeMax. There wasn't much more to it than that. Just me shopping at OfficeMax.
  11. Unlike NFL stadia, baseball parks do not have the same playing field dimensions. A neutral site like Houston could provide an unfair advantage to the team that had more right handed power hitters for the course of the entire series. Plus all the reasons mentioned above. Unless MLB builds a perfectly neutral park somewhere south of the Mason-Dixon line and travel costs drop drastically, there will be no neutral site World Series.
  12. When a team with a top tier scouting department loses their top two guys, as well as three of their top five guys, it's a pretty big deal, regardless of whether people recognize the names of Blengino and McNamara or not. I would say it's probably a more informed reaction to be a little freaked out about this, than have a nonchalant opinion about our losses. Which is not to say we can't recover. I've already said I think we'll probably be fine. But the loss of those three guys is actually a big deal, regardless of whether you know their names or not.
  13. It might be that they claimed him just to outright him once they need a 40-man spot for the Rule 5 stuff. I have no idea why they'd keep him on the 40-man all winter.
  14. The Brewers also announced that shortstop prospect Brent Brewer will replace third baseman Taylor Green in the Arizona Fall League. Green suffered a broken nose this week when hit by a bad-hop grounder and will have surgery next week. Link.
  15. Link. McGehee, 26, was a 10th round draft pick in 2003 by the Cubs out of Fresno State. He played this year at Class AAA Iowa, where he batted .296 with 30 doubles, 12 home runs and 92 RBI in 133 games. McGehee was a September call-up and saw action in nine games, batting .160 (9 for 24) with five RBI. McGehee has never been a highly regarded prospect, and nothing about his minor league career pops out at you. Unless he plays good defense, this isn't much of an upgrade over almost anybody. (edit: title --1992)
  16. I like this idea more, except I don't like to deal Weeks while his value is low. And the Rangers would be taking on a bunch of salary... maybe you tack Millwood on the Rangers' side?
  17. Citizen King would have to be in there somewhere. On a side note, Matt Sims, the leader of Citizen King, has had a couple really weird synth-pop albums ala Depeche Mode as "Mount Sims" ever since CK split up.
  18. He still has to fill the hitting coach and third base coach positions.
  19. I think you could get a lot more value for Fielder than Davis, Saltalamacchia and a future Dave Bush. I'd also be leery about trading for one guy that can only play 1B (Davis) and a second guy who might only play first base down the road (Saltalamacchia) when we have our own guy (Gamel) who might have to be switched to first base if he doesn't make it at third, and if the outfield is full. Heck, the only thing really holding Gamel back is his defense. If you trade Fielder, maybe you just switch Gamel right away and get his bat in the lineup? If the Brewers trade Fielder, I'd be surprised if the main guy coming back was also a first baseman. I'd also be surprised if we traded for a fix at catcher. With Salome, Lucroy, Palmisano and Fryer all likely to see time at AA and above this year, it seems unlikely to me. More likely for me, it would be a third baseman or pitcher in trade for Fielder. As for Blalock, it's a pretty big risk to guarantee his option and hope he stays healthy and produces. Finally, Bill Hall mitigates the value of anyone else involved in the trade going from the Brewers to another team. Do we really want to lessen the value of Fielder, arguably our best trading chip? Hall is owed 15.7 mil for the next two years... we might only get a Davis and Saltalamacchia if we force the Rangers to take him.
  20. I was spot-on in my analysis that the two finalists would be Blengino or Flanagan. I think I mentioned crosscheckers back there somewhere... Seid and Montgomery have each been crosscheckers for two years. This was Seid's 11th year in the organization, and Montgomery's 6th.
  21. Brewerguy, check out the discussion on compensation earlier in this thread, starting around reply #345 or something like that. The Royals would not "throw in" Joakim Soria in any deal. He's incredibly valuable to them. To get him, you'd probably have to trade Jeffress along with Salome. At least. Hardy, Jeffress, Salome and some other guys for DeJesus and Soria is a bad, bad deal for the Brewers. And I disagree that the Brewers are in need of any sort of a re-build. If they get one very good starting pitcher and a third baseman with good OBP, they are a solid playoff contender. Even as the team is, they're capable of around 80-85 wins. Do you think about trading Prince due to his defensive liabilities and the fact you're only going to have him for another three years? Sure, but that doesn't mean you're rebuilding.
  22. I think this depends on how much you absolutely need OBP. Hart is a better defender, and has more power. DeJesus' OBP is better, but that is the only advantage he has over Corey. I would not trade Hart for DeJesus at the moment, because I think OBP will improve next season as a natural progression (especially with Hart). I also think we're going to get a third baseman who has a good OBP. In theory, over the long term, I see your point. But as I've said, we have a really good CF under contract for '09. Why muck around with that unless you improve the position dramatically over the long term? I mean, Cain might even be ready by '10 and if not, DeJesus has one less year on his contract, which makes him cheaper.
  23. The Rangers sound like a good fit. Nearish to his home, and they're always desperate for pitching. They might give him 5 years, just to get him.
  24. I pride myself on Brewers' minor league knowledge, but I had totally erased Alex Delgado from my memory.
  25. Pete Rose was the last player manager, in the mid 80's
