  1. I make the claim based on what my HS geography teacher told me... maybe it's closer on a non-highway, straight line thing. But Texas is pretty huge.
  2. If I'm even close to being near the express lane quota, I don't go there. My time isn't important enough to screw people with just a few items. Edit: Except when the other option is a self-checkout station. In my experience, many people who could go there don't, for fear of technology or something. I can self-checkout faster than a lane clerk can check me out, so if there's no wait, I go there if it's within reason.
  3. While it's not quite the same thing, the distance between St. Paul and the northern tip of Texas is less than the distance between the northern tip and southern tip of Texas.
  4. Games of interest, centrally timed, playoff odds in parenthesis: 6:05 - Nationals (0.0%) @ Phillies (28.7%) - J. Bergmann (2-9, 4.51) vs. J. Blanton (6-12, 4.79) 6:10 - Braves (0.1%) @ Mets (70.0%) - J. Reyes (3-9, 5.33) vs. O. Perez (9-7, 3.91) 7:05 - Reds (0.0%) @ Cubs (99.2%) - J. Cueto (8-11, 4.90) vs. R. Harden (7-2, 2.17) 7:15 - Pirates (0.0%) @ Cardinals (15.6%) - I. Snell (4-10, 5.91) vs. B. Looper (11-9, 4.07) 8:40 - Padres (0.0%) @ Diamondbacks (51.0%) - J. Banks (3-5, 4.37) vs. D. Davis (4-7, 4.79) 9:10 - Rockies (0.4%) @ Dodgers (49.0%) - U. Jimenez (8-11, 3.94) vs. J. Kuroda (7-8, 3.88) 9:15 - Marlins (4.1%) @ Giants (0.0%) - R. Nolasco (11-7, 3.88) vs. K. Correia (2-6, 5.12)
  5. If the Brewers re-sign Sheets for $17 million per for 4 years, which is a number that seems really low to me, they'll have one of the best rotations in baseball going in to next season, not to speak of a Sheets/Gallardo/Parra/Jeffress/who cares rotation in 2 years. If you say to me that over the next few seasons that the team is willing to pay Jeff Suppan $12.5 mil per and Sheets not $17 mil per, I don't know what to say to you.
  6. Oswalt is recruiting Sheets... Ben, let's show him just how good you are.

  8. Geoff Blum? NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!

  10. Al, you basically admit making up "being laughed off the board" about Salome. I think it's ad hominem condescension against the board to criticize those nameless board members for something that's not true. And you couldn't possibly find "oof" condescending, could you?
  11. How many major league games has Prince played in the outfield, or will he play in the outfield?
  12. The numbers are elimination numbers for the division championship, the reverse of magic numbers.
  13. There's so much more that goes on defensively at catcher than third base. If you have a bad catcher and a bad third baseman, it's going to take a ton more work to get the catcher to play passably than it will the third baseman. And as battlekow mentioned, Gamel can play LF/RF/1B as well. Salome's frame limits him to catcher or DH... he's simply too short to play 1B. The weird thing to me about Salome is that he's always had better potential behind the dish than he does at the plate. He has a huge arm, and is athletic back there - he has the upside of a Gold Glover. At the plate, he has a quirky batting stance that looks like it shouldn't work and some people still wonder if it'll work at the big league level. But where he's at right now is completely reverse - he's struggling on defense and hitting lights out. Strange game, baseball.
  14. Brantley is still recovering from his high ankle sprain, and won't be 100% until the offseason. I would putting him in LF is just a way to reduce the workload on his bum ankle. If Cain and Brantley are on the same team and one of them has to play left field, most of the time it isn't going to be Lorenzo Cain. As Brad said, the only reason Cain hasn't played CF more previously is because he was on the same team with Darren Ford much of the time. As for "natural range" Brantley might be as fast as Cain (I guess I'd disagree with that, but whatever), but range is more than speed. Cain takes better routes to balls - he has better instincts. Brantley has been working on that and getting better, but again, there's a reason he's been bounced between 1B/LF/CF and Cain doesn't own a first baseman's mit. Do you think that if Green or Lucroy is taken it will affect where Lawrie plays? Not immediately. He'll be a catcher for at least a few years unless it's really clear early on he's not going to take. Roving catching instructor Charlie Greene has done wonders for a number of guys in the system and if there's anyone who can make a catcher out of Lawrie, it's Charlie.
  15. No you weren't. Salome has been in the top 7 on the Power 50 since 7/20/06, and in the top 5 every time since 8/23/06 expect once, 4/1/08, when he fell to 6th (!!!!).

  17. While Cain has a far superior arm to Brantley, he also has better range and more natural athleticism than Brantley. If Cain can play CF, that's where his value is maximized. He may well end up in RF long term, though, depending on how his instincts in the outfield develop. Brantley keeps getting moved off of CF because other guys have a better chance to stick there (at least, according to the Brewers). It's not like you can just plop Michael Brantley in CF and say "be good out there" - it takes work, and it's work he's not getting right now. Right now he's a LF. With more work, maybe he becomes a decent CF. Maybe not. He'll certainly need to develop good range to make up for his arm.
  18. If Brantley can learn to hit for a modicum of power and if he can learn to play an average center field (his arm is below average, so his range better not be), he could be a great leadoff hitter. As it stands now, Cain is playing CF every day for Huntsville, while Brantley has been pushed to LF again. To me that means the Brewers view Cain as the better CF prospect (and he has a very good arm) long term. If Brantley's defense doesn't take in CF, might still be able to fit into the lineup long-term if Hart or Cain wind up in CF and Braun is moved to RF. If neither Cain not Brantley are traded, an outfield of Brantley-Cain-Braun is a plausible guess for a few years from now. It would make more sense to trade an OF or a C than a 2B/3B (namely Taylor Green) because we're better stocked at both of those positions in the minors. Take out Brantley or Cain, and you still have Brantley or Cain, plus Gillespie, Gindl, maybe Gamel, maybe Lucroy, etc. Take out Lucroy and you still have Salome, Lawrie and Fryer. All of the guys most mentioned - Cain, Lucroy, Brantley and Green - are top 10 prospects, and it's going to suck if we lose one of them. But who knows, maybe Cleveland is going after Brewer or Bell or something. I too hope they make a decision soon... it is getting kind of distracting looking at the box scores and thinking "what if it's this guy?"
  19. He didn't even have to say "I'm not going to post anymore in the comments section" - he could have just stopped doing it. Instead, he posted that he wasn't going to comment anymore... and then proceeded to post four more times in that blog's comments section. Not to mention he didn't get Escobar's error total right. When someone corrected him, he responded with "I BELIEVE ESCOBAR HAS 19 ERRORS" (yes, in all caps). Baseball Reference, Kojak.
  20. Hinton wasn't demoted - he was hurt and the trip to Brevard was essentially a rehab assignment. One of those two guys isn't on the Power 50 anymore, and it isn't Hinton. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  21. cbsquirrel, was the email address something you added in, or was it in his blog? I don't see it there, though it may have been edited out.
  22. He actually posted a dude's email address? Yikes... libel is a helluva thing.
  23. I'm getting ready for a move and getting rid of some extra stuff, including these media guides. They aren't in pristine condition or anything, but they are free. I'd rather ship them as a set, or if you live in the Twin Cities, I can deliver them. Edit: They gone.
  24. Virtually all sports require intense physical competition and skill. As such, that does not impact my relative boredom level while watching them. Competitive walking takes a ton of talent - but I'm not going to watch that for more than the time it takes me to realize I'm watching it and then change the channel. Same with soccer, auto racing, volleyball, gymnastics, golf, basketball, strong man competitions, and track & field. I find soccer boring. A great many people find baseball intensely boring. C'est la vie.
  25. The world does expand past Europe. Yes of course it does. However, the statement was about LeBron James' impact on Europe vs. David Beckham's impact on the US. IMO, it's not even close - if James were to go there, he'd have a far greater impact than Beckham could even hope to have here. I say all of this because whenever I listen to sports radio, read message boards or have conversations with sports fans in general a common theme is that soccer is inferior or stupid with the inference that those who enjoy it must be as well. I don't know if I've ever read that much into the "soccer is boring" comments. I think a lot of people just find soccer to be really boring, no more, no less... which is an opinion I'm definitely sympathetic with. Personally I don't find it boring because I'm an American that thinks more is better, I find it boring because to me it's just a bunch of people running around a big lawn kicking a ball. I'm sure there is much more to it, and God bless it I've tried to like it, but I can't watch it without zoning out.
