  1. Games of interest, centrally timed, playoff odds in parenthesis: 12:05 - Nationals (0.0%) @ Cubs (98.5%) - O. Perez (5-9, 4.06) vs. R. Dempster (14-5, 2.92) 2:55 - Braves (0.0%) @ Cardinals (16.6%) - J. Campillo (7-6, 3.29) vs. K. Lohse (13-6, 3.94) 2:55 - Dodgers (36.2%) @ Phillies (21.6%) - C. Kershaw (2-3, 3.59) vs. C. Hamels (10-8, 3.22) 6:10 - Astros (0.0%) @ Mets (80.2%) - B. Backe (7-12, 5.62) vs. J. Maine (10-7, 3.82) 7:10 - Marlins (1.9%) @ Diamondbacks (63.5%) - C. Volstad (4-2, 3.02) vs. Y. Petit (2-3, 3.02)
  2. This number isn't going down fast enough. http://i1.chargers.com/assets/205/36761_600w600h.jpg
  3. -The Brewers traded Matt LaPorta for CC Sabathia. -Brian Roberts is a much worse player than CC Sabathia. -Therefore, the Brewers are not going to trade Mat Gamel or Alcides Escobar for Brian Roberts alone.
  4. If the Brewers clinch a World Series berth at Miller Park, I kind of hope the fans storm the field. That would make for a helluva spectacle (again).
  5. I forgot two: Jimmy McNulty Bunk Moreland
  6. The very only reason two reasons I can see that we wouldn't pick up Cam's option is if: -We trade for another CF that can put up close to the production in '09 and beyond, or; -We sign Sheets or Sabathia to such a deal that we can't afford him.
  7. It's Always Sunny has had such a limited run, that I feel wrong about listing any of the characters as "best ever" - they are all fantastic characters, especially Charlie, but I think the show needs another few years before I'm willing to make that claim. Actually, Rickety Cricket might be my favorite character on that show. Some women: Hot Lips Houlihan Adriana La Cerva (Sopranos) Nina Van Horn (Just Shoot Me) Susie Greene
  8. At first I thought this was going to be about the crowd storming the field again. Actually, I wonder what would happen if the crowd tried to do that? I was born in '81 and I honestly don't care how/when we clinch at this point. In fact, I'd rather the team hold off on any huge on-field celebration until the World Series. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  9. I'm honestly a little flummoxed over how many innings Anundsen is throwing... he's been struggling a lot recently, but they keep throwing him out there. 135 IP now after another bad performance, from a guy who turned 20 three months ago in A ball for the first time. I like to assume the Brewers know what they're doing, so I assume there's a rational explanation for it.
  10. Well... I caught in Little League and was one of the fastest people in my 7th grade class until I hurt my knee at a track meet. I still blame catching for that. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif It's not just pitch calling with Angel... he's had trouble blocking balls and doing the fundamental stuff. I sure hope he gets better... a healthy offseason with Charlie Greene could do him a world of good. As far as 5'6, 200 pound outfielders with... we'll say below average speed... I can't think of many. Matt Stairs is pretty short. Maybe Angel will be a trailblazer.
  11. He throws in the middle 80's and has a decent slider (IIRC... it's been awhile since I've seen him, he might have a change-up too?). The thing with Bateman is he's a side-armer with the inherent deception in the delivery that being a side-armer brings. He doesn't have great stuff, but he's sure been effective. I'm all for calling him up in September to see if we can catch lightning in a side-arm bottle.
  12. Captain James T. Kirk Peter Griffin Homer Simpson Morbo Number Six (The Prisoner) Cliff Clavin Desmond Hume Master Shake Stefano DiMera Lennie Briscoe Larry David Nate Fisher Looking at that, I'm sure I'm forgetting some women.
  13. Closing... this topic already exists in the minor league forum. Multiple copies of the same topic in multiple forums are not needed.
  14. If Cameron had 25 more plate appearances, he'd have the 6th best OPS among CF in baseball. Virtually any left-hander you get to play the position is going to be a downgrade offensively. As for "past his prime" - he's not having a career best season, but he's actually pretty close, and has an OPS above his career norm. I would be shocked if the Brewers didn't pick his option up.
  15. I don't take them at "full price" either - hence words I used such as "seems" and "kind of." But defensive range statistics (UZR and RZR much moreso than ZR and of course fielding %) do have some merit. They're pretty useful as a comparison tool because everyone is judged by the same metric. They're also useful when the counter arguments are "I'd still consider" and "always felt that way."
  16. Fielder's RZR (OOZ per inning) 2006: .728 (.033) 2007: .668 (.022) 2008: .688 (.030) Howard's RZR (OOZ per inning) 2006: .789 (.036) 2007: .723 (.017) 2008: .761 (.023) So based on that, Howard seems to be the more solid defender, getting to more stuff in his zone. He's been about in the middle of the pack in RZR all three years. That tells me empirically (well, kind of) that Fielder isn't getting to the balls he should be getting to, while Howard gets to them at least at a decent rate. Fielder seems to be slightly better at getting to stuff outside his zone while Howard struggled badly last season, and is only a bit better this year. Neither of them are quite average, though... best I can tell, "average" OOZ/inning is around .035, while high-end guys have a .040+ ratio there. I'd take Howard over Fielder because I believe it's more important for a first baseman to field the stuff he should get to than to go outside his zone. Howard seems more "solid" I guess. I can see the argument being made for Fielder in the short-term due to age, but I'd rather have the guy who fields the stuff he should if both are just going to end up being DHs in a few years anyway.
  17. Games of interest, centrally timed, playoff odds in parenthesis: 1:20 - Reds (0.0%) @ Cubs (99.2%) - J. Fogg (2-5, 7.71) vs. C. Zambrano (12-5, 3.38) 2:10 - Rockies (0.9%) @ Dodgers (35.4%) - J. de la Rosa (6-6, 6.16) vs. D. Lowe (9-10, 3.99) 2:45 - Marlins (2.7%) @ Giants (0.0%) - J. Johnson (3-0, 3.38) vs. M. Palmer (0-1, 23.14) 6:05 - Nationals (0.0%) @ Phillies (28.0%) - T. Redding (8-8, 4.66) vs. J. Moyer (11-7, 3.64) 6:10 - Braves (0.0%) @ Mets (73.9%) - M. Hampton (2-1, 6.92) vs. P. Martinez (4-3, 4.96) 8:40 - Padres (0.0%) @ Diamondbacks (64.0%) - C. Reineke (1-0, 5.40) vs. B. 18. Unless you're Mark Attanasio or on the advisory board, you can't possibly claim this as fact. I think it's very possible they'll have the money to pay one of the two at market value, but it may be the best thing for the long-term future of the franchise not to do so. Like I said, if Sheets would sign for 4 years at $15-18 million per and the Brewers could get a really great insurance policy on the contract, maybe you go for that. Much beyond that, or frankly anything that Sabathia will get, could hinder the financial flexibility of the team for the foreseeable future.
  19. Part of it is what colbyjack mentioned - he never really blew up in any inning. The other part of it might be that they're trying to get him as close to his inning cap as possible this year, so they're giving him more work, even though the work makes the pitching line look a little funky. Anyone else think the Brewers might hang onto Richie Gardner and try to make a reliever out of him? And I demand a BCB interview with Rigoberto Almonte!

  21. I'm guessing now that Kendall's contract in guaranteed for next season, we'll start seeing Rivera a little more often.

  24. This is true. Chain grocery stores, gas stations, department stores, etc., can get away with so many credit card receipts because of the economy of volume of inventory. While they might take a light beating on $5-10 purchases, they'll kill on $50+ purchases. The very big ones may also get a deal with their creditors. The nominal surcharge credit card companies charge is, in fact, significant if you're not pushing through a lot of inventory. A lot of the time, it's better than not taking cards, but you can save small retailers/service companies a grip by paying in cash/check. The marginal savings over the long term over cards is fairly significant.
