You're the first person in the thread to use the word "special" - but at least you have realized he's 25 years old now. What people are saying is that he'd likely be a 800ish OPS guy and that's pretty much average for a first baseman, which in other words means he would be no worse than about half of the rest of baseball. Which is not to mention the defensive upgrade from Prince. Which is also not to mention his recovery from his hamate injury. But since he's 26 and on the left of the defensive spectrum with every other AAA team having a player like him...
Alcides Escobar is just not going to be traded for a year and a half of Brian Roberts. It's not worth it to be the Brewers long term, especially when they might be able to get Mark Grudzielanek and keep Weeks. Grudz is a bit worse than Roberts at the plate, but he's certainly an upgrade to Weeks right now, and he's as good defensively as Roberts. If it came down to: Weeks, Escobar and R.J. Seidel for Roberts and Bradford; or, Brad Nelson and Darren Ford for Grudzielanek ...there's not even a question. Get Grudz and look at second base again in the offseason.
Exactly. I have little doubt that the Brewers will add one more arm to the staff. Who that arm is will depend on the team's cost/benefit analysis - would it be cheaper and still effective to trade for a marginal starter and slide Bush/McClung to the pen, or would it be more effective, but a little more costly, to trade for a good reliever? I still say TGJ has intrinsic value to the Padres that he'd have to few other teams, which is why Wolf and Maddux (or Heath Bell or heck, Mike Adams) interest me so much. What reliever are we going to get for Gwynn from another team?
You might well have to give up Jeffress to get Halladay and I wouldn't do that. If they can get Halladay for a package not including Jeffress (and including Braddock I assume), it would be real sweet to pick him up for a few years.
I would love to read everything you've read about Lucroy because we've apparently both read completely different things. What are the odds of that? Because he can hit and because he's not a butcher behind the plate, he's a de facto starting catching prospect. I'd hate to lose him, though I'd also hate to lose Taylor Green. And because we also have Salome and Lawrie, plus Palmisano, Fryer, Zarraga and some other guys, we're much more covered for a loss behind the plate than we are at 3B/2B (if you don't believe in Gamel's defense or Weeks' longterm bat). If Lucroy, Green and Brantley are on the list, I hope they take Brantley.
He's a managerial prospect in his own right. His current job is to manage a AAA team, but he no doubt has designs on a big league position... to get the part, you have to act the part, yes?
But they were... they took him out of the rotation for 3 weeks and only increased his workload by 30 innings. Which is exactly what they should do with Parra.
