That may be argued. All I see are moves, that for 2026, subtracts from the existing 97 win talent foundation rather than improves upon it - done for the hope of winning later rather than now. "Win Tonight" strikes me as clubhouse sloganeering intended mostly as something to feed the fans, give them something to rally around in the absence of economic competitive balance. For the sake of morale, the combat commander never tells his troops their licked, there is always hope that certain factors fall into place. I believe MIL's front office knows their only chance in hell of not only reaching the World Series, but winning it, is to have a whole bunch of top young/cheap talent peak simultaneously at various stages of controllable years, and that is what they strive to assemble. I'm not saying they are going to stink it up in 2026, but just that it's going to take some unlikely factors falling into place to be better than they were in 2025.

This is still sinking in. Initial reaction is that the Brewers are, at best, positioning for '27 (with them presuming no lengthy lockout), but more likely positioning for '28 (presuming a lengthy lockout) and beyond. Unless another trade is in the works, 2026 feels like a placeholder, mail it in season just biding time until all the new prospect saviors arrive to save the day. It also reveals how the organization feels about the young pitching depth. This is all going to take some time to digest.

Can’t blame a guy whose body betrays him. Regardless, I don’t really even consider Mitchell when looking ahead to the season. I expect CF to look much like last year with Chourio being the only established power bat anywhere in the entire OF.. My (pipe) “dream” is now resigned to Williams putting up ROY power numbers. The best I can apply to Mitchell is hoping he stays healthy and provides some bonus power. IF.. he stays healthy and fulfills his power potential and IF Jett is a real deal short king with power, then MIL would finally have a lethal OF offense. That's a lot to hope for... too much actually. But that's what we are stuck with.

Somebody was taking a swipe at me and others as being "perpetually pessimistic" because we don't see lollipops and rainbows with everything the populist view accepts. Instead of getting into a juvenile, name calling pissing match, I provided an explanation as to why someone might view a differing opinion in that manner.

The debate probably isn't Suarez vrs Durbin. Suarez at 3B most likely doesn't push Durbin's bat out of the lineup. More likely, it moves it to 2B and pushes Ortiz's bat out of the lineup. What's a better infield offensive lineup - one with Suarez, Durbin, Turang and Vaughn, or Ortiz, Durbin, Turang, Vaughn? I would have been fine had they landed him at 1/18. His defense can't be that absolutely incompetent to offset probably 30 HRs / 90 RBIs. Overall I'm indifferent to not adding him.

Sorry, I'm inclined towards independent thought. If that stereotypes me as perpetually pessimistic, so be it. I've heard and read plenty of online opinions which aren't as high on Pratt as they were. Some of his shine has come off. That to me equates to falling out of favor, primarily because he has a hotter prospect on his tail. I think some here misguidedly interpret that as me saying he's now viewed as a bust.

Unless a major shakeup takes place with the new CBA, the writing is on the wall. We shouldn't expect to retain any player that develops into a top 3 player in the league at the position. Someone else posted an astute observation... MIL may never have another HOF player.

Boston still seeking a trade partner
Turning2 replied to Turning2's topic in Transaction Rumors & Proposals
They may or may not even have the money to spend more. The uncertainty over tv revenue and the upcoming lockout also factors in. It's not my view that they need to spend crazy money. My view is that they have an abundance of prospect capital that they could afford to part with to attempt to clear the last hurdle. In the 70's my depression era raised mother, clung tightly to an overly preservative mindset influenced from that upbringing. When my parents finally splurged on new living room furniture, she was the type that would not remove the protective plastic from the end table lamps. That's how I feel the viewers are with their prospect capital. Yes, a small market needs a steady infusion of cheap prospects to not only remain competitive, but more importantly, financially viable. I just have to question at what point don't you question how many new end table lamps do you need in storage with the plastic on when you could trade a couple you might not need for a new TV counsel / entertainment center with a built-in stereo, state of the art record player that you do? -

MIL has done an admirable job countering the economic / competitive stacked deck they face. In lieu of the ability to spend obscene amounts of cash, they've tried to "old school" the margins. Building with speed, defense, contact hitters, and small ball, they have achieved remarkably, consistent success. But not ultimate success. Moneyball metrics make for a great movie. It doesn't win championships for a small market team without them temporarily playing the $$$ game. Having made the playoffs consistently for so long, and making the NLCS a number of times, yet unable to clear that last hurdle - that is a plateau in my book. The "bites at the apple" approach may eventually pay off. Until then, it's a more of a "close but no cigar" approach. - and somewhat intentionally so. That's a "summer of entertainment" business model. It's been profitable for ownership and titillating for perpetually optimistic fans. It's hard to complain about the success. The model has worked for what it is built to do. -

Either / or would be fine. Bottom line for me is that MIL should be looking for an immediate upgrade the OF offense. -
It's just the general vibe I'm sensing from forum posts, podcasters etc. Not in the sense of he's a bust, but most everybody is already crowning the new SS golden boy (Made). Pratt is probably trade bait unless he moves to OF. Made is pretty much penciled in as the very near future SS. At 3B Pratt will / would have Wilken, Fischer, maybe Adams to contend with in that same near future. Williams seems destined for the OF, but maybe they have real plans for him in the dirt. Just a lot of competition swimming in the prospect pool not to mention the existing starters, and Pena too. He is pretty young. Seems to me expectations were a bit high for him at AA. But to his misfortune, he has Made forcing the issue. Normally, I think most people would be quite content to let him play another season at AA, bumped up to AAA if merited. But as it is, he may very well be leapfrogged I suppose.
-
Pratt sure has fallen out of favor quick after just one somewhat offensively disappointing year at AA. He was the new SS golden boy just 2 years ago. Have to wonder what the sentiment will be about Made if he has a similar AA season this year.
-
The only moves they typically make to "excite" the fan base is to trade for prospects. Its logical that they want to get the up as quick as possible. It helps sell tickets and merch. I think they don't force the prospects to the majors if they absolutely can't, but the guys ahead of them often have a short leash. In other words, they wouldn't have forced Durbin up just to force it. But I think they were pretty confident that Dunn / Capra were going to make it an easy decision to do so, Same will happen with Jett. He's the shiniest thing they have to offer to the fans at the moment. And, to be fair, he appears to have enough skillset to justify a quick callup.

2025-26 Offseason Around the League Thread
Turning2 replied to sveumrules's topic in Milwaukee Brewers Talk
He seemed like a legit "cheap" option, decent bang for the buck with some proven performance. But not ideal either. Kind of coin flip on what he might give you at the plate. My kid is a Twins fan, so I saw a fair amount of Bader last year, and he just struck me as one of those solid contributors who doesn't get a lot of fanfare. I can take it or leave it though. -

And Bader gone too. Had thought that might be an option to upgrade CF, however unlikely. -

They already are looking to trade from surplus OF, so I don't see them needing Perkins. Maybe Tyler Black could find a role there along with a controllable pitching prospect? Futile speculation regardless. There's no smoke or fire between MIL and BOS. -
Peralta and Myers traded for Jett Williams and Sproat
Turning2 replied to torts's topic in Milwaukee Brewers Talk
That all sounds like Duran. I know I've been a broken record about him, but he matches every criterion you laid out. I'll add, JD wasn't even on my radar until somebody here, (maybe even Brock?), suggested him. I wasn't impressed by his numbers initially. But further consideration changed my mind. He's not, nor would become the power bat they need. Based on his past proven (rather than prospective) talent, he would be a very good upgrade, and a feasible acquisition. Alas, it's not to be. Maybe Jett can become a smaller, faster version of Duran. -

That was my initial thought. But I suspect that it is a pipedream. -
A few have referred to Miller as minor league depth but indicate an opinion that he is not a suitable consideration for the big leagues. Isn't that contradictory? If one holds the view that he is a minor league talent only, as I do, he's not really depth when depth is defined as being a viable major league option. If he's not generally viewed as ML material, what is he depth for?

Boston still seeking a trade partner
Turning2 replied to Turning2's topic in Transaction Rumors & Proposals
(I decided to cut the length of my original response) I'm usually on board with how they operate in building towards a WS. But once you plateau with a plan as they have, and are literally just a couple pieces away, as they are, I don't think it's unreasonable to be a notch more aggressive. It wouldn't have to be Duran specifically. That appeared to be a good trade needs match for both clubs to come away with immediate help. Duran alone probably wouldn't have helped the '25 NCLS, but it's about adapting and upgrading for '26. They simply don't have enough offense coming from CF and counting on Mitchell's bad luck to change is unwise. Baddoo, Lockridge, Perkins, and now Jett are all pretty much the same player. Granted, Jett's bat might play more eventually. I don't think they expect anything more from Berroa or Avans than providing emergency depth. -

Of course prospects have value, that's not what I'm saying. Not all prospects have MLB top ten cache. And there is a time to push for proven rather than prospective talent. When you won the most games and made it to the small market consolation round (NLCS), it is prudent to pursue proven MLB value to get to the next round. -
Excellent question. Have wondered about the mythic lab too. And why don't they have a hitting lab?

That is my expectation as well. And that is why I view him as redundant. We already have a super fast, light hitting CF who winds up playing too much because the guy who has the frame to be a power hitting CF is hurt all the time. JW's minor league offense might translate to the bigs, or it might not. Not long ago, all those thumbing down my comments would have been as supportive of Tyler Black coming over in a trade because of his minor league stats too. They are close to a WS berth. They need a proven OF bat with more pop than Perk has shown or that JW "might" have. I don't even factor in Mitchell anymore. I enjoy prospects and watching them develop. However, it tends to put fans on a treadmill always chasing the carrot on the stick with the titillating promise of the prospect payoff which is perpetually just a couple years away. It really shouldn't have been too much to ask to land a solid (proven MLB) bat for a super cheap year of high quality, dependable starting pitching. That's all I'm saying. -

Turning2 replied to Turning2's topic in Transaction Rumors & Proposals
The objective isn’t to have the most top 100 prospects. Many of whom turn into serviceable guys to field a team, but don’t live up to the hype. If the farm system shelves were bare, nabbing this pair would have made more sense. Don’t mind Sproat, but JW is redundant. He might surprise me with better power than I’m expecting, but I’m skeptical. -

Turning2 replied to Turning2's topic in Transaction Rumors & Proposals
Maybe. Depends on what specifically the Sox are looking for. Not sure how excited they get about prospects versus proven MLB commodities. We're forced to be content suckling on prospect potential. Bigger markets can demand real players that have already proven themselves at the MLB level. So, you might be right. Boston would probably laugh at a package that included Pena or Pratt and some pitching for Duran or Abreu. Then again, this article indicates that they are probably getting desperate to find a trade partner.
