Transactions: Milwaukee Brewers optioned LF Brandon Lockridge to Nashville Sounds Norfolk (Baltimore) 7, Nashville 5 Box Score & Game Log Sal Frelick led the game off, yanking a slider down the rightfield line and sneaking out for a 323-foot homerun. The rehabbing Frelick finished 2-5 with the second home run of his rehab stint. That would be the last time the Sounds had the lead, starter Thomas Pannone gave up seven runs, four earned, in 2.1 innings and the road team couldn’t make up the deficit. Blake Holub pitched a clean eighth inning, striking out two. Ethan Murray hit a two-run home run in the sixth inning. Jeferson Quero went 2-3 with a walk, and Bo Naylor went 1-3 with two walks while serving as DH. After Nashville scored first, the Tides scored seven straight runs to build their lead. The Sounds comeback bid fell short with four unanswered runs, but none after the sixth inning. Rehabber Sal Frelick got the scoring started with a leadoff home run three pitches into the game and his second home run of his rehab assignment. He added his second hit and RBI of the night in the fifth to finish the night 2-for-4 and recorded his first multi-hit game in eight games played with Nashville working his way back from a shoulder injury he suffered in mid-July. Left-hander Thomas Pannone got the start on the mound for Nashville and made quick work of the Tides in the first before running into trouble in the second. Three hits led to three runs and a Tides' advantage after the second. Things unraveled for Nashville in the bottom of the third inning with four errors in the frame as the Tides advantage grew to 7-1 on just two hits as Pannone exited the game after just 2.1 IP with seven runs (4 ER) charged on five hits, two walks, and four strikeouts for the southpaw. Lyon Richardson took over in relief and helped strand two on base. Richardson did not yield a hit over 2.2 scoreless innings out of the bullpen. The Sounds began to chip away in the top of the fifth after Brock Wilken and Eric Brown Jr. recorded singles to give Frelick the RBI chance in the inning to cut the deficit to 7-2. Three hits, including a RBI double for Akil Baddoo and a two-out, two-run home run off the bat of Ethan Murray followed in the sixth as Nashville put themselves within striking distance heading to the later innings. Following Murray's home run, Nashville drew two walks in the top of the seventh but left both stranded. A leadoff walk in the top of the eighth was erased on a double play as the Sounds sent just three batters to the plate in the inning. Bo Naylor collected the 11th and final hit of the night for Nashville with a two-out single off former Columbus teammate Codi Heuer, who was dealt to Milwaukee along with Naylor before eventually getting moved to Baltimore just two days later. Heuer collected his seventh Triple-A save of the season, allowing just the one hit over two scoreless innings for Norfolk. Kaleb Bowman (2.0 IP, H, K) and Blake Holub (1.0 IP, 2 K) covered the final three innings on the mound for Nashville out of the bullpen. The trio of Nashville relievers combined to allow just the one hit over the final 5.2 IP without a run. The series continues on Thursday morning with first pitch scheduled for 11:05 am CT as the Sounds and Tides will play some afternoon baseball in game three of the series. RHP Coleman Crow (7-1, 3.39 ERA) will look to get the Sounds back on track. POSTGAME NOTES: BETTER CALL SAL: Sal Frelick continued his rehab assignment with his first multi-hit game in eight games played with the Sounds, and first overall since July 9 on the road in St. Louis with the Brewers. Frelick has a hit in six-of-eight games played during his rehab assignment with now two home runs, two doubles, five RBI, and six runs scored after hitting a leadoff home run Wednesday night. It's the first leadoff home run the Sounds have hit since June 20 in Memphis when Akil Baddoo started the game off with a trip around the bases. It was the fifth career leadoff home run for Frelick and first in Triple-A. He owns three career leadoff home runs in the big leagues with his most recent coming on July 2, 2025, against the Mets on the road. Frelick's only other career leadoff homer in the minors came on August 13, 2021, with Low-A Carolina. OUT IN A MURRAY: Ethan Murray hit his first home run since June 18 on the road in Memphis with a two-run home run in the top of the sixth inning on Wednesday night against the Tides. Murray has five career Triple-A home runs in 112 games played with the Sounds and all four this season have come away from First Horizon Park. Murray now has home runs in Memphis, Louisville, Charlotte, and Norfolk. He has a hit in nine of his last 12 games played and has recorded multi-RBI performances in three of his last five after finishing Wednesday night 1-for-4 with the 2 RBI and a run scored. GIVE IT A BLAKE: Blake Holub turned in another scoreless relief appearance out of the Nashville bullpen Wednesday night against the Tides. The right-hander hasn't allowed an earned run in any of his last five appearances (5.0 IP) and has just one earned run allowed in each of his last 12 appearances. Over his last 31 appearances since the start of May Holub has surrendered just four earned runs across 31.1 IP and carries a 1.08 ERA. Over the same span, he has struck out 43 batters with just nine walks allowed but is 3-3 and taken the loss in two of his last three appearances. He leads the team in appearances this season with 42 despite missing nearly three weeks on the injured list from June 4-23. He set a single-season career-high with 48 appearances during the 2023 season between High-A West Michigan and Double-A Erie in the Tigers system. He worked in 45 games during 2024 between Nashville and Biloxi in his first season in the Brewers farm system. New Brewers organization catcher Bo Naylor had an RBI single in that ninth inning as part of a 1-4 night and has an RBI knock in both of the games he’s played with Nashville. Naylor also caught the Redbirds’ speedy leadoff hitter, Victor Scott II, attempting to steal third base and did not allow a stolen base in the game. Colton Gordon made his fourth start for Nashville since being acquired from the Astros organization. Gordon went six innings, allowing three runs, two earned, and eight hits, while only walking one and striking out four. He’s now given up eight hits in three of his four appearances in the Brewers organization, while walking exactly one batter in all four of his outings. After designating Lance McCullers for assignment, the Brewers are left with only Gordon to show in return for their roughly $2 million investment in McCullers contract and sending Jadyn Fielder to Houston. Nashville had seven hits total from seven different hitters, Luke Adams’ double in the sixth innings was their only extra-base hit. Adams came in to score on a single by the DH Jeferson Quero. Both teams were scoreless through five innings with Columbus breaking through for a run in the sixth, followed by three runs for Biloxi in the seventh and the Clingstones walking off the Shuckers with three in the ninth. One day after posting his first Double-A home run, Marco Dinges posted his first multi-hit game at the level. Leading off and playing catcher, Dinges finished 2-4 with a double and a stolen base. Jesús Made remains the top overall prospect according to the site and their lone prospect with a Future Value (FV) ranking of 65. The writers gush over the speed and electricity in his hands from both sides of the plate, and the fact that he has maintained a well-above-average 14.6% K-rate at such a young age in Double-A. Luis Pena checks in at 25th overall with a 55 FV, without much commentary given his extended absences this season. The rankings list four more Brewers Prospects, the first three of which are all ranked much higher than at any time before. 42. Alexander Frias, 50 FV 63. Brady Ebel, 50 FV 68. Tyson Hardin, 50 FV 106. Jeferson Quero, 50 FV FanGraphs says, “Frias is a Freak with crazy bat speed and physical projection, the guy on the list with the best shot to have a Junior Caminero type of rise.” That is a wildly exciting comp for Frias, and would mean the Brewers could have another top ten prospect in the near future. The post also lists some key data for each prospect, and only three players have a higher Max Exit Velocity than Frias, and all of them are at least two years older than he is. This is also quite a jump in ranking for Hardin, with this write-up: “Forret and Hardin are some of the best bets in the upper minors to develop plus command or better, and Hardin in particular has taken major strides toward that outcome over the last 18 months.” Hardin has cruised through the Brewers minor league system and could help this year’s MLB team either on the field or as part of a trade package before Monday’s deadline. As for Quero, he has maintained his ranking on the site which had this to say, “Quero’s combination of relative youth, athleticism and power keeps us on him even though he has been just fair (a .320 xwOBA) across 140 games at Triple-A since he returned from a labrum tear and hamstring injury that caused him to miss basically all of 2024 and the first six weeks of 2025. While other sites might have Andrew Fischer, Josh Adamczewski, Braylon Payne, Jett Williams, Bishop Letson, Blake Burke, Josh Knoth, Marco Dinges, or another prospect ranked higher than some of the players Fangraphs ranked, it is further proof of the profound depth and quality of the Brewers' farm system right now. Eduardo Garcia took the lead back with the Sounds' third solo shot of the game. Hardin would go on to give up seven more runs in the top of the fourth to finish his outing. Possibly his last start in the Brewers organization if he were to end up as part of a trade deadline package for a difference-making MLB player. Lockridge added an infield single in the ninth inning to register his second consecutive two-hit game. The home run was Lockridge’s first in over a year, and first with the Brewers organization. Lockridge could be primed to join the big-league Brewers for the second trade deadline in a row. Wilken hit his 11th home run of the season as part of a 1-4, 2K night. Cameron Wagoner pitched a scoreless eighth inning, striking out two and walking one. Wagoner topped out at 98.8 MPH. One day after tying the Shuckers team record for home runs in a season, Burke added two more to set a new standard and bring his season total to 29 and his career Biloxi total to 40, also a team record. Burke added a double just for fun, finishing 3-5 with five RBI. Might be time for this Volunteer to return to his Mountain Home. Biloxi had eleven total hits in the game including two each from Jesús Made, Josiah Ragsdale and Josh Adamczewski. Made and Adamczewski each had a double, Josh A. with a sacrifice fly as well. Ragsdale is almost as scorching hot as Burke; he hit his 8th home run in the last nine games. Unfortunately, this is the second consecutive one-run game with the Shuckers on the wrong side of the ledger. Cairone struck out the leadoff batter, then a flyout, a walk and a hit batter followed by another strikeout. Cairone committed a fielding error allowing the first batter in the second inning to reach, then struck out the next batter, while allowing a stolen base and a wild pitch moving the runner to third. A walk and another strikeout followed and then Cairone hit the next two batters forcing in a run. Cairone was removed from the game, and the next two batters were a walk and another HBP, scoring two more runs. So Cairone finished with 4 strikeouts, 2 walks, 3 R, 0 ER with an error and 3 HBP! Here’s hoping Cairone moves up to Wilson when the ACL season ends and gets more opportunities to keep working his way back. December’s aggressive projection may have gotten a little ahead of itself. Many of the prospects added to that version have performed well, but most are still in Double-A and may not be ready for the Opening Day roster. The new collective bargaining agreement (CBA) may also decrease the number of years that teams have control over players and incentivise the Brewers to delay bringing up some of their top prospects. We know there's uncertainty; that's why this is fun. Catchers (2) William Contreras Jeferson Quero William Contreras represented the Brewers in the All-Star Game and remains one of the top catchers in baseball. The Brewers kept Willy Adames all the way to free agency, and barring a major change in the way the new CBA handles compensation for teams losing top free agents, Contreras seems likely to remain in Milwaukee next season. Quero has turned things around in Triple-A after a slow start to the season, and he should be ready to share time with Contreras next season. V 2.0 changes: None Infielders (6) Andrew Vaughn (1B) Brice Turang (2B) David Hamilton (3B) Cooper Pratt (SS) Joey Ortiz (INF) Andrew Fischer (1B/3B) Brice Turang has fulfilled the breakout that he foreshadowed last August, and is the best all-around second baseman in baseball, despite MLB somehow excluding him from the All-Star team. Other than Turang, the infield is almost a complete rewrite from the December projection. The Brewers have multiple options at every position, possibly pointing to trades at this year’s deadline or over the winter The Brewers faith in Cooper Pratt was much greater than anticipated, and he looks set to hold down shortstop through this season and into next. Hamilton quickly became a Pat Murphy favorite, and his bat has been doing more damage of late. He’s still a bit of a wild card defensively, and will have to get back on the field in good shape after being shelved with a leg injury, but he has a strong toehold. Joey Ortiz remains the best defensive infielder on the team and the backup shortstop. Andrew Fischer has shown a level of power the Brewers haven’t had since Prince Fielder. This projection anticipates Fischer joining the Brewers in September, contributing in the postseason and then earning a spot on the 2027 team, replacing Jake Bauers (who will be a free agent after this season). Jesus Made will probably be ready sometime during 2027, but will he displace Pratt at shortstop or take over third base? Blake Burke or Luke Adams could also have a case to win the first base job, but unless Andrew Vaughn is traded, they will both wait in Triple-A for an opportunity. V 2.0 Changes: Vaughn, Pratt and Hamilton in; Made, Burke and Caleb Durbin out Outfield (5) Jackson Chourio (LF) Garrett Mitchell (CF) Sal Frelick (RF) Luis Lara (OF) Christian Yelich (DH) Garrett Mitchell’s breakout was not baked into the first version of this projection. His health and production have both been welcome surprises. It seemed reasonable to doubt that Mitchell would put a season like this together, since despite having accrued more than three years of service time prior to this season, he's likely to have more plate appearances this year than in the rest of his career combined. Mitchell’s defense has taken a step back this year, and his BABIP is unsustainable, but he is locked into this lineup and helping win games. Chourio was greatly missed after going down just before the season started. Since his return, he has played like an All-Star and the outfield anchor the Brewers envisioned when signing him to a record-breaking extension. Luis Lara was projected to make this roster, and his contract extension and subsequent call-up seem to lock that in. If either Mitchell or Frelick are traded between now and the start of 2027, Lara is already on the roster to fill that role. As it stands, the Brewers have outstanding outfield depth and flexibility. V 2.0 Changes: Mitchell in; Blake Perkins out Starting Pitchers (5) Jacob Misiorowski Kyle Harrison Brandon Sproat Logan Henderson Robert Gasser The Miz has been the best pitcher in baseball this year and is primed to lead the Brewers rotation for the foreseeable future. Harrison and Sproat arrived in trades this year and appear locked into rotation roles. Harrison has been excellent, while Sproat has flashed at times and (importantly) remained available. Henderson continues to be excellent when he is available to pitch and should have a spot in next season’s rotation. The fifth spot feels like a battle between Gasser, Shane Drohan and Chad Patrick. All are solid pitchers, worthy of a rotation spot. Patrick has proved he can excel from the bullpen in both high-leverage and volume roles, while Drohan’s arsenal should set him up to do the same. V 2.0 Changes: Harrison and Sproat in; Quinn Priester and Patrick out Bullpen (8) Trevor Megill Abner Uribe Aaron Ashby Chad Patrick Shane Drohan Craig Yoho DL Hall Colton Gordon The last projection assumed Trevor Megill would be traded either this past winter or in the coming one. However, with the Brewers primed to be in contention for the World Series both this season and next, keeping Megill (along with stars Contreras and Turang) could make more sense than trading him. Ashby appears tired right now, but he is an elite reliever. Patrick and Drohan would be starters for most teams. Here, they provide the Brewers with valuable innings. Yoho has dominated the minors and needs to prove he can consistently throw strikes in the majors, he’s been much better during his most recent call-up. When Hall is healthy and pitching to his ability, he will have a place in this bullpen. Here’s betting the Brewers will turn the newly acquired Gordon into a contributor. The Brewers will have a host of pitchers available in Triple-A for depth, including: Coleman Crow, Grant Anderson, Jared Koenig, Brian Fitzpatrick, Cameron Wagoner and Brett Wichrowski. ACL Rangers 8, ACL Brewers 7, seven innings as scheduled Box Score & Game Log The Brewers took a 7-4 lead with a productive five-run top of the fifth. The first three batters of the inning walked followed by Brailyn Antunez knocking in two with a single. The rest of the inning was a blur for the Rangers' pitchers and catcher, as the Brewers stole four bases, Antunez scored on a wild pitch and Moises Polanco scored on an Engel Paulino hit by pitch. The Rangers manager was also ejected during the inning. It was all for naught, as the Desert Brewers gave one run back in the bottom of the fifth and two in the sixth. Antunez finished 3-4 with a double. Kenny Fenelon was 0-3 with a walk and stole his 22nd base of the season. Roderick Flores and Leonard Rijo both had RBI line drive singles to center to account for the Brewers first two runs of the game. Joan Pena pitched the last two innings giving up three earned runs while allowing three hits and walking three, but five of the six outs he recorded came via the strikeout. Catcher Jonathan Rangel was pulled from the game in the 4th as the game log noted an injury delay as successive run-scoring wild pitches were thrown by RH starter Dariel Jaquez, two of the five thrown by Jacquez in his four innings of work (5 R, 3 BB, 1 K, 1 HR). Rangel was replaced behind the dish by Malachai Halterman. A third catcher, Freider Rojas, has appeared in 17 games at catcher this season (13 starts). However, if Rangel, who also has 17 starts at first base, were to miss any time, it further depletes an extremely lean roster. The only non-catcher on the bench as this game started was middle infielder CJ Hughes. This lack of stateside roster flexibility across MiLB has been discussed to some extent in the national media this summer. Organizations are limited to 165 non-40-man roster stateside players (those on the 60-day or full-season injured list do not count, though the number of players that can be designated as long-term injured is capped at 15).
