Final: Birmingham 6, Biloxi 4 Shuckers Win Second Half Despite 6-4 Result Against Birmingham Shuckers Finish Regular Season With Franchise Best 81 Wins By Garrett Greene / Biloxi Shuckers (Michael Krebs) Biloxi Box Score Despite losing on Monday, Biloxi clinched the 2nd half title for the Southern League South division - thanks to a Pensacola lose. By winning both halves of the regular season, four of the five games in the next series will be played in Biloxi if needed. In Monday's seasons finale, the Shuckers had their chances, but went 1-13 with runners in scoring position, leaving 12 on base. Weston Wilson led the way with three hits, while Corey Ray and Keston Hiura added two each. Conor Haber left the team in a big hole early as he was clobbered for eight hits and six runs in less than three innings. On the bright side, Miguel Sanchez was outstanding, striking out five batters in just two innings of work. He didn't give up any hits or walks. The Shuckers concluded the season with an 81-59 record. Batting Corey Ray: 2-4, BB Keston Hiura: 2-4, BB, SB Weston Wilson: 3-5, 2B Pitching Conor Harber: 2.2 IP, 8 hits, 6 ER, 1BB, 2K, Lose Nattino Diplan: 3.1 IP, 2 hits, 0 ER, 3BB, 4K Miguel Sanchez: 2.0 IP, 0 hits, 0 ER, 0BB, 5K Cody Ponce: 1.0 IP, 0 hits, 0 ER, 0BB, 2K Notes The Brewer organization appear to be moving Cody Ponce into a relief role. Six of his last seven appearances have been for two or fewer innings. Former Brewer farmhand Kodi Medeiros finished off the season on a sour note in today's game. Medeiros gave up three runs, three hits and walked five in 2.1 innings. Biloxi Game Log Shuckers got three in the 3rd, but it would not be enough to overcome the six run deficit. Biloxi Bottom of the 3rd Corey Ray singles on a line drive to center fielder Joel Booker. Keston Hiura walks. Corey Ray to 2nd. With Troy Stokes Jr. batting, wild pitch by Kodi Medeiros, Corey Ray to 3rd. Keston Hiura to 2nd. Troy Stokes Jr. walks. Weston Wilson singles on a ground ball to center fielder Joel Booker. Corey Ray scores. Keston Hiura to 3rd. Troy Stokes Jr. to 2nd. Trent Grisham out on a sacrifice fly to center fielder Joel Booker. Keston Hiura scores. Blake Allemand walks. Troy Stokes Jr. to 3rd. Weston Wilson to 2nd. Pitching Change: Jake Johansen replaces Kodi Medeiros. Gabriel Noriega out on a sacrifice fly to right fielder Alex Call. Troy Stokes Jr. scores. Weston Wilson to 3rd. Cubs acquire Daniel Murphy from the Nationals
Matt Breen replied to JDBrewCrew's topic in Milwaukee Brewers Talk
Murphy would be a perfect guy to add in 2019 if you could get him for a one year deal. Quality, left-handed bat at a position that is in flux. Of course, you want to make sure he's healthy. -
Final: Birmingham 6, Biloxi 3 Shuckers Magic Number Remains At One Going Into Final Game Of The Regular Season Shuckers Magic Number Remains At One Going Into Final Game Of The Regular Season By Garrett Greene / Biloxi Shuckers (Michael Krebs) Biloxi Box Score It was an uninspiring performance all around for Biloxi on Sunday. A 6-3 lose, coupled with a win by Pensacola, means the Shuckers magic number to clinch the second half South Division title remains at one with one game - with tomorrow's game the final of the regular season. Biloxi managed three runs on six hits and five walks - but it wasn't enough as the Shuckers staff gave away too many free passes (eight, including five from Marcos Diplan) to go with eight hits. That just turned into too many runs. The Shuckers close out the season on Monday afternoon. Biloxi is scheduled to face former Brewer farmhand Kodi Medeiros. Batting Keston Hiura: 2-4 Troy Stokes Jr.: 1-3, BB, SB Luis Aviles Jr.: 1-3, BB Gabriel Noriega: 2-3, BB Pitching Marcos Diplan: 5.0 IP, 1 hit, 1 ER, 5BB, 5K, Lose Brad Kuntz: 1.1 IP, 3 hits, 2 ER, 0BB, 5K Jon Olczak: 0.2 IP, 1 hit, 0 ER, 1BB, 0K Josh Uhen: 2.1 IP, 2 hits, 2 ER, 1BB, 1K Cody Ponce: 0.2 IP, 1 hit, 0 ER, 1BB, 1K Biloxi Game Log After struggling most of the game, Biloxi made a run at things with a three-run 7th. Unfortunately, it would not be enough. Biloxi Bottom of the 7th Pitching Change: Mauricio Cabrera replaces Bernardo Flores Jr. Weston Wilson walks. Trent Grisham walks. Weston Wilson to 2nd. Blake Allemand pops out to third baseman Trey Michalczewski in foul territory. With Luis Aviles Jr. batting, wild pitch by Mauricio Cabrera, Weston Wilson to 3rd. Trent Grisham to 2nd. Luis Aviles Jr. walks. Gabriel Noriega walks. Weston Wilson scores. Trent Grisham to 3rd. Luis Aviles Jr. to 2nd. Pitching Change: Zach Thompson replaces Mauricio Cabrera. Tyler Heineman out on a sacrifice fly to right fielder Alex Call. Trent Grisham scores. Corey Ray singles on a line drive to center fielder Luis Alexander Basabe. Luis Aviles Jr. scores. Gabriel Noriega to 2nd. Keston Hiura strikes out swinging.

2018 Standings and Playoff Race Discussion
Matt Breen replied to Eye Black's topic in Milwaukee Brewers Talk
What's kind of crazy is that the Mariners are on pace to win 91 games - yet they will still miss out on the Wild Card to teams on pace for 96 and 101 wins, respectively. It's not that extreme in the NL, but I think it shows the effect of the 'tanking' teams. We have more and more teams punting on a season, and with no chance of making the playoffs, they sell off good players, avoid free agent signings, and retool with the hope of winning down the road. It's a strategy that has worked for the Cubs and Astros recently, so I can't blame a team for rebuilding. I mean, winning 73 games offers little solace to a club. Might as well reboot the club and drop 10 more games. You improve your draft selection, add some young assets - why not do it. It all makes making the playoffs more difficult as teams have to aim for 90 wins for a chance to go into the post season - and even then, that's not guaranteed. -
Miley, Davies, Anderson, Chacin and Gonzalez is my guess. They didn't get Gonzalez to pitch out of the pen. I'm guessing they'll start him. Counsel will say stuff about 'veteran' and 'been there' - then allude to not wanting to put a young player in a difficult spot (which I hate). That's my guess.

2018-19 Offseason Trade Candidates
Matt Breen replied to pacopete4's topic in Transaction Rumors & Proposals
The Key is - with what assets? Thor - or someone like him - is going to take a package such as Hiura, Burnes and Ray. And that might not be enough. I would love Syndergaard or another top-of-the-line pitcher, but I just don't know if we will pull the trigger. I'd certainly investigate such a deal - but I'm not sure we will do something this dramatic. -
As has Gio. Really bad. I feel like when it comes to pitchers , we are asking CC to play Russian roulette with 6 bullets in the revolver. The thing with Gio is that the guy produced a 6.0+ WAR last year. A 2.96 ERA, 200 IP. That's really good. You usually don't see guys with his track record just implode like that. That often means he's injured, or he's needs to get his mechanicals in order. If it's the latter, hopefully we can do that. With Junior, he's never been that good. He's had stretches here and there - but not like Gio. So I don't expect him to suddenly 'get better' - while I could see Gonzalez turn things around. He doesn't need to be an all star - just be average - and he's a huge plus. I'm honestly not optimistic - but I'll give it a chance. Especially over Guerra.
-
I've been a fan of Woodruff, but it seems the team doesn't trust him much. He's had his ups and downs, no doubt. But I would like to have given him a chance like they did with Peralta - a run of a dozen starts or something - instead of just a few here and there. I feel like with rookies, if they struggle quickly, they get pushed back in the cupboard and forgotten. If they don't believe in the guy, that's okay. Move him to the bullpen or try and use him as a trade chip. I just don't like him being jerked around. His numbers in the majors weren't bad. 30 IP, 31K, 11BB, 4.80 ERA. Certainly not that good either, but the peripherals are solid.
-
I would be pretty confident betting that Gonzales would be better than this. Based on what? He’s been terrible from start to finish all season. Gonzalez has a sub. 3.00 ERA at the end of May. He was actually quite good before the wheels fell of the bus. Not saying that means he's better or anything - just that he has not be terrible all season.
-
I'm generally more patient about things regarding baseball, but at some point you have to show a sense of urgency. We have 20-some games left, you only have so many opportunities remaining. Guys who are struggling need to be minimized. Guys who are good need to be playing. Frankly, you can't be afraid of running out of bullets. I'm not saying pitch Hader every day or something silly, but there's a point where you need to ask guys to step up when needed. I imagine Guerra is done for the season as a starter. He's just been bad for a couple of months now.

clarification from the uber mods about whether this fits into the posting guidelines and general intent of this thread would be great... I will say that it is difficult to make a judgement on something like this without context. First, it says it was in response to another poster - but I'd want to be sure it wasn't really just a general comment aimed at a general idea. There could be a bunch of posts debating the merit of playing Thames, and someone could reply to one person - but really be referring to the general theme. A more general comment - not aimed at a person - probably comes across as less offensive. Is it done well? No. It pushes the sarcasm buttons and challenges others - at least to a degree. Second, has the poster been baited or goaded? Is the post really part of a more contentious thread, where people are getting edgy. All this puts a different spin on the situation. So again, context. However, if the post was directed at a specific person without any real reason, I'd probably say it isn't a particularly nice quote. 'Wow, is this real life' could be showing some exasperation. Then saying someone is 'wildly lazy' is kind of jerkish. The 'End of discussion' isn't of itself offensive, but it can have a 'this is the answer and there's no other answer' pronouncement - which is just kind of arrogant. No matter what, I'd rather have had a post such as, "Thames has a .507 OPS since the all star break. I don't think looking at his early season numbers really is very relevant, and focusing on his entire season isn't a smart move. I feel so strongly about this, I'd rather have some of our pitchers hit rather than Thames." Nicer, less contentious - no matter the context. In the end, other things can affect the view of a post like this. One of the biggest factors is a person's posting history. A person who posts a lot of stuff like this is going to have less rope than someone who doesn't. The Mods can't police every post on the site. If someone genuinely got the above post, and felt it was really offensive, report it. We will look at it. How we will respond depends on the context of the entire thing. I do want to say that we have to understand that everyone is human - and we all do and say some dumb things. Probably every person on this board has made a snarky or challenging post that came across more harshly than they intended. I think we often know that, and we let a lot of stuff slide - just chalk it up to us being human - and move on. Ultimately, we'll look at each situation and react. Every situation is a little different. And each response is a little different. I hope this helps with things.

September games are going to have lots of relievers, lots of pinch hitting, lots of substitutions. Be prepared for some long games.
-
I'll just add that Gio Gonzalez has been a good pitcher - and not that long ago. Last year he was valued at 6.4 WAR. At the end of may this year, he had a 2.10 ERA. Obviously, he has gone in the tank since then, but who knows what we will get going forward. Perhaps the team sees some mechanical things he can do. Who knows. But if they can work with him, and get him back to what he normally has been, he could be a really nice addition. Of course, that's a big if.

Brewers acquire Curtis Granderson for CF Demi Orimoloye
Matt Breen replied to Brewcrewin07's topic in Milwaukee Brewers Talk
Depth, flexibility and options. That's what we are getting with the trades today. Let's be honest, it's not like we are going to get a superstar player. These moves allows you minimize your weaknesses, adapt as needed, and be prepared for when injuries arise. All good. -

At the time Burnes was called up, the rotation was doing okay. Guerra's ERA was sub-3.00. Anderson and Chacin's was sub-4.00. Peralta was pitching well (if erratically). And Suter was an adequate #5. So at the time, Burnes to the majors meant heading to the pen. It made some sense (you could argue Suter to the bullpen and Burnes to the rotation was a better move, but we won't quibble). Miley picked up the other rotation slot with Suter's injury - can't really argue with those results. That gets us to September. Things have changed. Chacin and Miley have been fine. Anderson has regressed a bit, but I think he's okay. Guerra and Peralta, however, have not been good. Peralta has been really erratic - and honestly, not very good of late. His ERA since the all star break is 6.19. Guerra has struggled even worse - 6.55 ERA since the all star break. 20 runs in his last 10 innings. You have to do something. I would sideline Guerra and Peralta for the time being. The first move is bringing up Davies and putting him into the rotation. As for the next move, I wouldn't have a problem giving Burnes an honest shot. If you're going to do it - do it now, and let him build back up his arm over the next four weeks. You can start with 70-80 pitches, and just build up his arm. Frankly, Burnes probably is our best hope for a solid rotation arm at this point (barring a trade). So I wouldn't have a problem moving him into the rotation. Personally, I like Brandon Woodruff, but I don't see that happening. The team just seems to have forgotten about him. But hey, you never know.
