  1. I will say this about back-of-the-rotation arms like Shields and Gibson. These guys might offer a little bit of predictable mediocrity that comforting, but in the end, I would rather the club take a chance on Woodruff or Burnes going into the rotation. Could they implode? Sure. But they could also do well, and solidify the rotation. I guess I look at this as a high risk / high reward situation. I'd rather take the risk that a younger guy can do well, than accept the mediocre performance of a veteran arm like Shields. That's just my preference. I'd rather take the risks than go with a known quantity that really doesn't bring a lot to the table.
  2. Yeah, some of the suggestions you see are kind of silly. But hey, I guess they can ask high and go down. Someone will bite sooner or later.
  3. I have a 2014 Escape. It's been great. We got the turbo charged version so it has some great pickup. Thing rides smooth - no issues in 4+ years (cross fingers). As for negotiating - here's how I do this with cars. 1. Figure out the cars you are interested in. Do this online at edmunds.com, kbb.com, other car sites. When I got my Escape, I narrowed it down to five models. 2. Go to the dealer - or call - and set up an appointment to drive the car. 3. Drive each car. Tell dealer the car is one of the ones you are interested in. Tell them to e-mail you the best price by a specific time. Move on to your next test drive. 4. Get all the quotes in on your phone. Make a decision. 5. Never (or almost never) buy the extra stuff they try and sell you. Gap insurance, special waxes/coatings, extended warranties. They are greatly overpriced, and rarely used. I've done this a few times and essentially gotten what I feel was a decent deal (based upon researching pricing online, plus talking with my brother, who works at a car dealership). I don't like negotiating. I just like to get what I think is a decent offer. I just say this to my salesperson, and tell them they have one chance to make a sale.
  4. The thing great for Iribarren is that he's got more than 43 days in the majors. That will give him lifetime healthcare coverage (he got that by just appearing in a big league game), plus an annual pension of $34,000 (starting at age 62). Not a bad deal for him. Gives him some security down the road. Plus, as the article notes, he looks like he'll be able to stay in the game as a coach after he retires.
  5. Gray depends on the following: 1. The team has seen him pitch and feels that he can rebound to be an effective starter. 2. The price isn't terribly high. It's a year and a half of the guy, so this is not some long term, controllable asset. And he's not a top of the rotation asset. The price has to be reasonable. I'm thinking an Ortiz level player and maybe some change. The other guy that might interest them in Eric Thames. With Aguilar's emergence, Thames is being put into RF - which doesn't thrill me. Of course, that means more playing time for Phillips and Braun - or maybe the return of Santana. I honestly have a hard time putting a price on Gray. The team MUST feel they can right his ship if they go after him. I don't want a reclamation project or a guy who has little chance of being a quality asset. If the team believes he can be a good addition, he's worth something decent. Unfortunately, the Yankees gave up a lot of Gray last year. I doubt they'll unload him just to unload him.
  6. Tillman was awful last year. 7.84 ERA. He's even worse this year. 10.46. Unless you want someone for AAA depth, forget about it.
  7. I agree. Just give the guy a few starts and let him settle in. There will be growing pains - just like with Peralta - but I think the guy can be a serviceable starter.
  8. The Houston Astros have had five starting pitchers all season. Verlander, Cole, Morton, Keuchel and McCullers have started all 103 games this year. That's pretty amazing. Back in 2011 the Brewers had only six guys start games all year. Gallardo, Greinke, Marcum, Narveson and Wolf started the majority of the games - Marco Estrada had seven starts when Greinke and the Narv Dog missed a few games during the course of the year. Staying healthy is so critical - and when you avoid the injury bug, it really helps a team get through the slog of 162 games.
  9. Jake Gatewood reportedly twisted his ankle badly in the game and was carted off the field in the 8th inning. No official word on the severity of the injury, but initial observations make it sound like it was not good. One report called it 'scary' and another said Gatewood 'didn't seem to move out of the fetal position'.
  10. Final: Biloxi 7, Jackson 3 Biloxi Box Score Corey Ray and Keston Hiura each hits home runs to lead the Shuckers to a 7-3 victory on Tuesday night over the Jackson Generals. Ray, Hiura, Lucas Erceg and Trent Grisham all had a pair of hits. Luis Ortiz had a nice outing, giving up just one run in five innings of work. He surrendered four hits and a walk, while striking out five. On a down note, Jake Gatewood reportedly twisted his ankle badly in the game and was carted off the field in the 8th inning. No official word on the severity of the injury, but initial observations make it sound like it was not good. One report called it 'scary' and another said Gatewood 'didn't seem to move out of the fetal position'. Batting Corey Ray: 2-5, HR, 2 SB Troy Stokes, Jr.: 1-3, BB, SB, CS Keston Hiura: 2-5, HR, SB Jake Gatewood: 1-3, 2B, BB Lucas Erceg: 2-4 Trent Grisham: 2-4 Pitching Luis Ortiz: 5.0 IP, 4 hits, 1 ER, 1BB, 3K, Win Cody Ponce: 2.1 IP, 3 hits, 1 ER, 1BB, 1K Nate Griep: 1.2 IP, 1 hit, 0 ER, 0BB, 0K, Save Notes Ortiz's ERA has dropped to 3.92 on the season. Biloxi Game Log Home run from Corey. Nice way to start a game! Biloxi Top of the 1st Corey Ray homers (20) on a fly ball to right field. Troy Stokes Jr. doubles (20) on a sharp fly ball to center fielder Daniel Robertson. Keston Hiura strikes out swinging. With Jake Gatewood batting, Troy Stokes Jr. steals (16) 3rd base. Jake Gatewood walks. Lucas Erceg singles on a sharp ground ball to right fielder Jay Gonzalez. Troy Stokes Jr. scores. Jake Gatewood to 3rd. Luis Aviles Jr. grounds into a double play, shortstop Kevin Medrano to second baseman Domingo Leyba to first baseman Rudy Flores. Lucas Erceg out at 2nd.
  11. Tate's a really solid pick up for Baltimore. The guy isn't a top shelf prospect like a couple of years ago, but he's been pitching pretty well. Seems like a solid pitcher who has regained some of his luster. I guess the closest person he'd match up to in the Brewer system is Luis Ortiz.
  12. Blanco and Hager with 3 hits also. That's why you cant just look at stats and say Arcia or Santana are "fixed." I'm sure they're looking for adjustments. Are they driving it to right, changed swing, fishing for sliders, etc. Ivan DeJesus Jr. hit .345 last year at Colorado Springs. This year at Pawtucket - it's .263. So yeah, you're exactly right, there's a lot more to look at with these guys than the stat line at CS. It doesn't mean they are doing better - but be wary with CS numbers.
  13. Reds rallied against the Cards with 2 out in the 9th too. Bud Norris lost it for the Cardinals. Even better.
  14. Final: Jackson 2, Biloxi 1 Supak Spins Gem But Shuckers Walked Off In Jackson Generals Snap Shuckers Seven-Game Winning Streak By Garrett Greene / Biloxi Shuckers (Michael Krebs) Biloxi Box Score Tough lose on Monday night ends Biloxi's seven-game winning streak. Trey Supak was outstanding for Biloxi. He surrendered only two hits over a career high eight innings. Unfortunately, an error, stolen base and a passed ball led to an unearned run in the 6th, and Supak left the game tied 1-1. He walked one batter and struck out five. Biloxi would lose the game in the bottom of the 9th as Jon Olczak gave up a walk, then hit the next batter, then surrendered a single, which scored the winning run for Jackson. In the end, Jackson scored two runs on just three hits and two walks. The Shuckers were equally as inept at the plate, managing only three three hits and walk. One of the hits was an HR from Luis Aviles, Jr. Batting Jake Gatewood: 1-3, BB Lucas Erceg: 1-4, 2B Luis Aviles, Jr.: 1-3, HR Pitching Zack Brown: 3.2 IP, 4 hits, 1 ER, 1BB, 3K Jon Perrin: 3.1 IP, 4 hits, 3 ER, 0BB, 5K Josh Uhen: 1.0 IP, 0 hits, 0 ER, 0BB, 1K Brad Kuntz: 1.0 IP, 1 hits, 0 ER, 0BB, 1K, Win Notes Supak's excellent outing (the eight innings was a career best) lowered his ERA to 3.93 on the season. 15. How many extra pitches is Saladino responsible for? His two errors extended two innings Yeah, you can't underestimate the value of good defense. It's the kind of thing that just dings you in ways you don't always realize - such as greater pitch counts. Which leads to earlier exits. Which leads to more work from the relievers. Which leads to overused relievers. You get the idea.
  16. It is always terrible when something like this happens - especially to someone like Suter - who has overcome the odds to make to the big leagues. Just feel for the guy. Well, if anyone will work at a comeback, it will be Suter. But it won't happen until 2020. Good luck to the guy.
  17. Chris Archer? No. Sterling Archer. Absolutely.
  18. Ladies and Gentlemen, we would like to invite everyone to take part in the 2018 Mid-Season BF.net Fan Community Top 25 Prospects voting. Voting is now open. Please take time and submit on this thread your top 25 Brewer prospects. Feel free to list any resources or news that you feel might help people with their voting. Voting concludes on August 8. You can change your votes at anytime through August 8. IMPORTANT: FREDDY PERALTA STATUS Freddy Peralta has throw 53.1 innings this year. A pitcher only need 50 IP to graduate from prospect eligibility, meaning Peralta has passed that threshold, and is NOT eligible to be included in your voting. So, NO Freddy Peralta. RULES 1. Submit your Top 25 prospects, in order, by end of day on August 8. Put the player's full name to avoid any confusion (such as Jay Feliciano and Mario Feliciano). I appreciate it you would number them. Also, please list your players from #1 to #25. 2. You MUST submit 25 prospects. If there are only 10 or 15 or whatever, your list will not be included. 3. You are encouraged to go beyond pick #25 - adding a few more is great. That way if someone in your top 25 is traded or released, or if you mistakenly miss a number (not uncommon), or list a guy twice (again, not uncommon), or whatever, I can just bump up your next player(s) into the Top 25. 4. Rankings are determined by total points. The top prospect gets 25 points, second prospect gets 24 points, etc. 4. As noted above, if you submit your list and want to change something, just add the change to the thread. I'll accept changes up to the deadline. 5. Within a week or so after the deadline, we'll publish the new BF.net Community Top 25. Eligibility guidelines: Rookie eligibility is determined by the same standards as MLB: “A player shall be considered a rookie unless, during a previous season or seasons, he has (a) exceeded 130 at-bats or 50 innings pitched in the Major Leagues; or (b) accumulated more than 45 days on the active roster of a Major League club or clubs during the period of 25-player limit (excluding time in the military service and time on the disabled list).” - Ineligible players: Brandon Woodruff (#3), Taylor Williams (#10), Freddy Peralta (#6) - Eligible players with ML experience: Adrian Houser, Aaron Wilkerson, Nate Orf, Jacob Nottingham, Corbin Burnes Player notes: - Josh Pennington - #26 prospect this pre-season - has retired. - Kyle Wren - #39 prospect was released. - Kodi Medeiros - #18 prospect was traded. - Brett Phillips - #4 prospect was traded. - Jorge Lopez - #35 prospect was traded. - Johnny Davis - #52 prospect was released. - Tyler Webb - #56 prospect was waived. - Luis Ortiz - #5 prospect was traded. - Jean Carmona - #21 prospect was traded. 19. Final: Biloxi 7, Tennessee 5 Stokes Jr.'s Walk-Off Bomb Caps Perfect Homestand for the Shuckers Ray and Gatewood also Homer as Part of Seventh Straight Win By Spencer Siegel / Biloxi Shuckers (Michael Krebs) Biloxi Box Score Big comeback on Sunday for the Shuckers. Down 5-1 going into the 8th inning, Biloxi put up four runs to tie it, then followed up in the 9th with a Troy Stokes, Jr. HR to win the game. The Shuckers have now won seven straight. Corey Ray and Jake Gatewood also homered in the game. Zack Brown left Sunday's game early. It was reported that Brown got his cleat caught underneath him as he tried to field a ball hit back to the mound. He fell and injured his leg. He will be evaluated further and is considered day-to-day. 21. Final: Biloxi 4, Tennessee 1 Diplan Earns First Double-A Victory As Shuckers Make it Six In A Row Grisham Homers for Second Time in as Many Games By Spencer Siegel / Biloxi Shuckers (Michael Krebs) Biloxi Box Score Marcos Diplan was good on Saturday, giving up just one run on four hits and a walk over 6.2 innings. Diplan's only black mark was surrendering a solo HR in the 5th. Miguel Sanchez and Nate Griep would shut down the Smokies over the last seven outs to preserve the win. Shucker bats were mostly quiet - but they were big when needed. Trent Grisham had a 2-run HR in the 2nd inning, while Jake Gatewood added a 2-run double in the 6th.
